This is a cottage on five acres on Second Creek, just as it enters Great Sodus Bay. We have several hundred feet of secluded waterfront down the hill via a private road from a cottage that sits atop the ridge line on Thornton Point. Note that the property, at 5 acres, is large, and that the cottage sits up a fairly high hill and is not right on the water. The water is visible through several 'windows' of trees we have cleared, but for the most part the cottage feels woodsy. A walk down the hill takes you right to the quite private waterfront area.
The cottage itself consists of two floors. The main floor, above, includes a living room with natural pine cathedral ceilings and a hearth/woodstove; dining area; kitchen and two bedrooms. The kitchen is totally new as of mid-July 2014. The master bedroom has a king size bed. The second upstairs bedroom has a bunk bed (double + twin) and a futon that folds out for sleeping (double). This floor also has sliding doors leading to a deck that looks down toward the water through the trees.
Below is a finished basement area. This area is functional in that it has a 'boat bar' fashioned from a real boat, a working half-bath, furniture and a small room with a bed in it. NOTE HOWEVER that we are NOT advertising the basement as part of the true useable space. It is cool but can get damp and the furniture is somewhat old fashioned. When we stay we tend to use the upstairs, which is more than sufficient. So while the basement is not off-limits (and you may use it if you choose), the area is in need of a spruce-up, scheduled for next year. Meantime, consider the first floor the living and sleeping area as it is more than sufficient for five.
At the bottom of the hill at the water, we have a small bunkhouse that can be used for sleeping if you like, though this is quite rustic and there is no water or electricity down the hill. We have kayaks with which you can explore the bay in one direction or the newly conserved Second Creek in the other direction, with abundant wildlife.
More than welcome. Ours like to walk the mile down the dirt road to the beginning of Thornton Point Road where you find Alasa Farms, and old Shaker Farm that is fun to explore, and the Cracker Box Palace large animal shelter....moreless

We list the property as 'bring your own towels' as a weekly rental. We do have bath and beach towels in the house. These are the ones we use and are nothing fancy. In a pinch, or if you don't want to bring your own linens, you are welcome to use the ones that are in the house. ...moreless

Sodus Bay is a bay off Lake Ontario. It has a look and vibe something like the Finger Lakes, just to the south. The main village on the bay, Sodus Point, has a number of bars, restaurants, beaches, lighthouses and marinas. While most of the Sodus Bay area, like the Finger Lakes, is well-developed, our place is somewhat unique in that it sits on one of the only relatively undeveloped areas on the Bay. Accordingly, we have 5 totally private acres on the water and are surrounded by conservation land.
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Jeff and Pat both work in colleges, Jeff as a professor and Pat in administration.
Why the Owner Chose Sodus Point: Pat grew up in the area and vacationed on Sodus Bay as a child. When we decided to buy a second home, we opted for this area despite the long commute since it has so many wonderful attractions.
The Unique Benefits at this House: You won't find many properties like this in the Sodus Bay/Finger Lakes region. Like a lot of lake areas, these areas tend to be intensively developed, with properties jammed in close to one another to take advantage of the limited waterfront area. Here, we are surrounded by conservation land and have several hundred feet of private waterfront.
WHAT WE ARE NOT AND WHAT WE DON'T GOT.
You want to know what might be missing in this glowing account? Here are some other things about the place you should read to make sure it is for you.
Please note that as stated above we are on a shallow and weedy creek and it's not a swimming hole. You can't launch a boat from the property if only for the steep grade of the hill and the difficulty with a trailer. It's in the woods so there's pollen and a tendency to spider webs rather quickly.
The house is on the top of the hill looking down through trees through the water, which is visible through several 'windows' though the trees. But the cottage itself is not 'on the water'. The kitchen is brand new but overall, the place gives off a homey, not a showoffy, vibe. This ain't the Hamptons, it's our home, and we use it too. The bed linens and towels will all be fresh and clean, but they are family style, mix and match, not hotel style.
There is no washer/dryer. Laundries in town a few minutes away. And there is no wi-fi or cable, though as noted we have a TV with a DVD connection.
I reiterate these caveats here since all potential renters should have a full picture of the place to make sure it is a good fit. If you are thinking this is a palace, or a retreat complete with internet and cable think again. It is a great retreat from all that, and the sunset through the trees as the sun goes down in the evening is priceless.
