14th July Bastille Day Celebrations, Festival de la Cite in July with Status Quou, Seal, Lenny Kravitz & Depeche Mode!!!

Cathar Cottage is situated in the heart of a Cathar Country village just minutes from Carcassonne City. It is a charming two bedroom cottage that has been beautifully restored keeping the original stone walls and oak beams whilst adding the necessary comforts for your holiday. The village is surrounded by vineyards and produces it's own superb Cabardes wine!

You walk straight into a taste of the 13th Century when staying in Cathar Cottage. The ground floor has a large kitchen, dining room that has beautifully built stone walls and large oak beams. Through the remains of a stone arch you will find a spacious shower room and separate toilet. Up the old stairs to the lounge, with oak beams and through into the large, bright double bedroom. From the lounge you go out into a small, private terrace with table, chairs and BBQ. There is a second toilet on this floor. Behind a large very old oak door you will venture up the stairs (steep but safe) to a beautiful second bedroom that has twin beds. The cottage is very light and spacious and full of history. It's in the heart of this ancient, peaceful Cathar village which is surrounded by vineyards, country side and beautiful views. The village itself has a 13th Century Chateau and Church. There is a wonderful restaurant in the village that also produces it's own wine. You can enjoy a little wine tasting and learn which grapes they use, how they're harvested etc. or you can stay and treat yourselves to a lovely meal. You are only minutes from the City of Carcassonne, a World Heritage Site which is a real joy to wonder around and get lost in it's many little cobbled streets.

There is the famous Canal du Midi, another World Heritage Site, where you can take a boat trip and see the wild life. This whole area is full of Medieval villages just waiting to be explored, all with their own piece of magic. The miles of sandy beaches at Narbonne are within an hours drive where you can sunbathe and swim and then enjoy the taste of fresh fish, fresh wine and fresh air. On the other side of Carcassonne you will find the Lac de la Cavayere. There are three beaches, pedalos, crazy golf, a snack bar/ice-creams. You can walk around the lake and enjoy watching the butterflies, frogs, fish, lizards etc. During the winter you can be on the slopes of the Pyrenees within two hours enjoying wonderful snow without millions of people.

From swimming to rapids to horse riding to skiing to fishing to sight seeing to wine tasting to market visiting to walking to swimming to cycling it's all available here and much, much more. Carcassonne and it's surrounding area is brimming over with history and stunning historical sites. There are many ancient Abbeys and Chateaux that are waiting with open doors to let you experience just a little of Cathar life. You are also in the heart of wine country. With some truly fantastic wines you will be surprised by the quality and richness you will taste. You can also visit Limoux which is the home of the original sparkling wine, many, many years before Champagne came along. You can visit the 'wine caves' and learn how the bubbles are 'made' and the great difference between the original method and the newer champagne method. Also there is the town of Castelnaudary which is where the famous Cassoulet was born. If you love food you must indulge in a Cassoulet. It'll blow your socks off. The City of Carcassonne is a must that needs to be experienced day and night, with musicians playing in the streets and restaurants, the wine flowing and the aromas floating in the breeze you might even think that you were in the south of France!! Come and enjoy a secret peace of history.

Carcassonne is truly spectacular at Christmas with a wonderful outdoor ice-skating rink, wooden chalets selling local produce and beautiful handmade specialities for that extra special Christmas gift, magical Christmas lights all around the upper and lower cities plus a fantastic 40m Big Wheel that runs day and night to experience a sky view of the wonderous City and surrounding areas. It's like walking into a winter wonder land!!!

Cathar Cottage is also available for long out of season lets. Whether you'd simply like to experience the relaxed life for a while or are house hunting or waiting for a house sale to be completed, we can offer you a very good rate. All you have to do is ask and we'd be happy to help.

    • The Cathar Cottage was so very “authentic” with tile floors and beamed ceilings—yet all the modern appliances. I contacted the owners John and Victoria Manley who were very helpful in setting us up at the cottage. The cottage was perfect for our needs. It had a small kitchen where we cooked breakfast and dinner every night. The refrigerator even made ice—always important for us Americans!! The cottage had bathrooms on both the main floor and on the second floor. The neighbors were very friendly, and the free parking was very close. The bakery was only about a block away, so we had fresh bread and/or other treats every day. The cottage made a perfect base as it was very close to both freeway access and scenic roads in the area. We spent four nights at the cottage; and should we ever be lucky enough to return to France, we will not hesitate to again stay at the Cathar Cottage.

    • Cathar Cottage was the ideal base for seeing the Languedoc and Rousillon area of France. It was only 10 minutes from the airport and very easy to get to. The locals were very friendly and helpful. We had some fantastic days out in Cordes Sur Ciel, Collioure,Minerve and sampled lots of wines in the lovely restaurants in La Cite in Carcassonne.

    • Loved the cottage, the village and the location. Locals are very friendly and I enjoyed exploring the local countryside and Carcassonne. Conveniently located, I was able to easily visit Barcelona and the Costa Brava, the Cote d'Azur, Southern Provence, Nimes, Toulouse and Albi during the month I stayed. Vicky and John were most enjoyable as well.

    • We stayed at Cathar cottage for 4 nights with our 13 year old son and had a wonderful time. We had never been to France before, and the village & cottage took us back several hundred years in making the experience unique and unforgettable. Our hosts were friendly & knowledgable and we were centrally located which made it easy to explore the area. Highly recommend!

    • We spent a lovely week in October at the cottage. Especially unique was living in a small, old village with few other tourists and the friendliness of the villagers.

    • We stayed at the Cathar Cottage in August for 4 nights and had a wonderful experience. It was nice to have such a great place to return to each evening. The accommodations were very comfortable, clean, and very quiet. We had plenty of room for our family of 3. The neighbors are also very friendly if you take the time to chat. We hope to return soon!

    • I was very impressed with the cottage. There were two of us, but two more would have still been a comfortable fit. Everything was updated and in good shape in this authentic ancient stone cottage. For top shelf meals at a good price, Chateau Pennautier in the village and La Bergerie in Aragon are both excellent value for authentic dining expereinces. For a "see God" cassoulet, visit the Hotel de France in Castelnaudary. I cried.

    • We have just spent a very comfortable and enjoyable week in Cathar Cottage. Thanks to Vicky and John for a good stay and helping us get there in one piece. It was a good base to explore the surrounding area, which had plenty to do in a week to keep us entertained. We had several long beach walks, climbed to some of the old clifftop Cathar castles, strolled the cobbled streets of Carcassone, explored the nearby forests and 90m waterfall and relaxed in a variety of cafes from Montpellier to Collioure soaking up the atmosphere. Lots to do and a comfy place to return at the end of the day, good choice.

    • We stayed in Cathar Cottage in March of 2006 and loved it. The restuarant in the winery was great. We particularly liked the boulangerie on the Rue Victor Hugo [same street as the cottage], John even got their croissant recipe and detailed instructions. The village butcher shop around the corner was where we bought most of our meat and he was friendly. We enjoyed the surrounding countryside and Carcassonne. It was great buying fresh asparagus in the market there. We liked the house, the friendliness of the people in town, interacting with the kids, all of it. We definitely plan to return. John and Vicky have a a great place at an extremely reasonalble price. They were extremely helpful and patient in answering our questions as we arranged the rental. We should have posted a comment before this but better late than never-Jim
