Gold Beach house description
Ideal setting for those who want the convenience of a small town, quick access to a beach, and still be remote enough to experience the beauty of nature at its finest. - Both north and south of Gold Beach lie dozens of miles of pristine beaches with no visible sign of civilization, except for occasional uninhabited teepees made of driftwood. This part of the coast is among the most the beautiful in the world and is the ideal place for anyone wishing to be inspired by nature. Rock formations jut out of the beach near tidepools teaming with life. There is world-class fishing for both sport and consumption. It is also a one hour drive to the legendary giant redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. ...moreless

House was clean unlike other reviews called out. We did not book the extra/separate room. The loft/2 rooms was plenty of room for 6. Noise carries a bit in the house so my ear plugs came in handy when I was trying to sleep in when the rest of the house was up and moving. Easy access to house.

Owner response: Thanks for the review. Since the earlier reviews we now have wireless television streaming available to anyone with a wireless device such as a laptop or smartphone. Also, the chairlift from the garage to the main floor is functional now, so it is possible to not climb any stairs.
Good and bad
Good and bad
The location of the property is great and the river and ocean views spectacular!. However, there are some issues with the house. First, there was no access to the garage so parking was outside and entry to the house was by outside stairs. On a couple of "bad weather" days it would have been nice to park inside and enter the house from inside. Second, the kitchen has some nice appliances but the coffee maker had a problem keeping the coffee warm after brewing. Third, there were no washcloths for bathing and only one set of towels for the week. Lastly, no TV. None of us are big TV watchers, but it would have been nice to have a TV (or radio) to check on news or watch a movie. I also feel the description of the property should mention "no TV".

Owner response: I want everyone who comes to this special property to have a wonderful experience and take feedback very seriously. Here are my responses: Unfortunately, I could have told the renters where extra towels were located, but they did not call me. Since reading the review I have informed the new cleaning service that wash cloths need to be placed in the bathrooms where renters will readily see them. (There is also a washer and dryer for renters if they run through the available towel supply or want to wash their clothes.) The coffee pot will be replaced this week with a brand new one of higher quality. The garage is currently locked because it contains tools and materials for the new master suite, which will be stunning when done. I anticipate that it will be completed over the next two months, well in time for next year.

I feel I need to preface my remarks by stating that the owner may not have been aware of the condition of her home. She had entrusted the care and cleaning of her home to someone whom she obviously trusted to do a good job for her. Unfortunately we found this home to be unacceptably dirty. We have rented many vacation homes before, and we have never encountered anything like this. The bathrooms were VERY dirty, the carpets needed vacuuming, and the furniture was covered with dust. The kitchen appliances and pots and pans were either dirty or in poor condition. We tried to talk ourselves into just making the best of a bad situation, but the joy had gone out of our much anticipated vacation. We even went to the store, purchased a variety of cleaning supplies, and spent well over an hour cleaning the bathrooms. We eventually decided we just couldn't spend our vacation there. We knew it would be difficult if not impossible to find another home that we could rent immediately. It was also an expense that we could ill afford, but we were not willing to give up the chance to have a nice vacation. We were fortunate to find a lovely home in another city further north that we could rent right away. I want to end by saying that the original home is quite nice architecturally and has a lot of potential. When the remodel is complete and the home is thoroughly cleaned, it could be a pleasant place to spend a vacation. Be forewarned, though, that there are LOTS of steps leading to the house. One entryway has fewer steps, but they were all too much for my 88 year old mother. The owner of this home was willing, thankfully, to refund our cleaning fee. As for the rest of our rental expense, well, I'll just say it was a good learning experience for us.

Owner response: It is unfortunate that this is the first review. Several clients had wonderful experiences this season and expressed their comments in our guest book. The house was fully rented when purchased in early 2012 and the tenants loved it then, even before this past year of not renting it while doing continuous upgrades inside and out, including a new roof, new hardwood floors (the rugs mentioned are area rugs meant to keep debris from entering the house), ceramic tile that replaced linoleum, the addition of a wood stove, etc. I am a perfectionist and was horrified when I received this complaint. Unfortunately, she didn’t call me until after purchasing cleaning supplies (there were supplies already in the kitchen) and cleaning. I apologized to her and explained that I had been assured the house had been thoroughly cleaned. I asked if it would make up for the situation if I refunded the cleaning fee and she agreed. I put a check in the mail immediately. If she hadn’t seemed satisfied, I would have done more to remedy the situation. Unfortunately, I wasn’t contacted again until after they had relocated. I immediately confronted and fired the house cleaner, hired another, and am overseeing the management more closely, so I don’t anticipate this ever happening again. I completed the remodel on the original house in July 2013 and this summer was my first experience renting. I didn’t realize how hard it would be to find professional cleaners during the high season. Gold Beach is a very desirable vacation spot with a small population. Cleaning an entire house between rentals is time-consuming and costly. As for the appliances; the garbage disposal, refrigerator, and microwave are all brand new. The dishwasher has less than two years of use, and I plan to replace the stove because I prefer gas over electric... not because it is unacceptable. The house has leather furniture, and lots of wood and glass surfaces. As a result it is easier to see a day’s accumulation of dust. Ironically, one of the reasons the wall to wall carpet was removed from the home was to make it easier to clean. When the weather is dry, fine dust is in the air. The stairs were probably the main issue. We discussed them before they rented the property and they are readily apparent in the VRBO pictures. The lockbox requires climbing 25 stairs, but I have someone who can provide access to the house upon arrival. The house can also be accessed by a total of 13 stairs with an intermediate landing.
