NoPa (North of Panhandle) house description

A recent guest said it best,
'Absolutely stunning house in what I think is one of the neighbourhoods with most personality in SF. This area has got a bit of everything, and at the same time is a bit tucked away from the buzz. Still you are close to what ever you feel like doing. The Golden Gate Park is just a few blocks away and the quaint little french bistro, that our lovely host Rob was kind enough to point out, is just one block away and served a lovely Moule Mariné in a cozy environment. We recommend it! The house it self was very clean and well laid out. Beds were comfortable and the pictures doesn't quite capture how large of a space it actually is! Sometimes the details are the thing that enhances the stay in a house, Rob's place was full of high quality details. Nice entertainment center with Netflix and a great sound system located in the kitchen dinner area. That turned the cooking to a really social affair. Kitchen was very well equipped and left nothing to desire. We had a bunch of great meals! The cat LuLu was a real sweetheart and the kids took turns cuddling her. She was totally optional and it was all our decision to let her in the house. Rob stays in a studio in the basement of the house while renting it out but he is truly great at being the invisible host only appearing when we needed him. All in all I can just say: If you want a class stay in a beautiful environment while visiting San Francisco, go here! Thanks Rob!'

DETAILS: Large, renovated 1895 Victorian home with high 12 ft ceilings, columns, tall windows, incredible amounts of natural light and very open floor plan (like a cross between a loft and Victorian)

2 bedrooms, queen beds, 1.5 baths, huge living space, wood floors, super comfy great room/kitchen/dining room--in total 2 stories, 2,100 sf--it's spacious. 1-2 kids could sleep on great room couch. WiFi, 50' TV, Apple TV, DVD, cable TV and a collection of 100's of books. Washer, dryer. Large patio and yard which great to use, but still a work in progress. Parking available on the street directly in front of the house.

NEIGHBORHOOD: Incredible neighborhood if you want to experience local SF culture. Three world class restaraunts within a four block walk (NOPA, Park Central, Bar Crudo). Coffee, market, sandwich shop within 100 ft. Walking distance to thriving shopping/eating neighborhoods of Haight Ashbury, Lower Haight, the Castro and the up and coming North Panhandle. 10 min bus ride to de Young Museum, Academy of Sciences, the Conservatory of Flowers and the rest of Golden Gate Park. 15 mins to Ocean Beach, Cliff House, The Presidio and the rest of the City. This neighborhood it truly one of the cultural hearts of the City. If I was new to SF and had a choice of my neighborhoods today, this would be it.

HISTORY: Here's the story behind this 1895 Stick Victorian. It was first owned by Frank Devlin, a pattern maker at Levi Strauss--they obviously made good money back then. The entire structure was built with rough-sawn redwood and handmade square nails. It's 'balloon framing' allows it to flex in earthquakes and high winds without damage. It seemed to survive the 1906 quake fine unlike most of it's immediate neighbors. The pillars in the front parlors were added just after the quake. In the 70's and 80's it seems like there was a bit of a 'war of the roses' going on. Upstairs had layers and layers of different pastel colors and retained the original Victorian details. Downstairs was a different story. One room had fully saturated gold paint, then red, then black, then white acoustic tile, then wood paneling, then a duck hunting scene done in a mosaic of square mirrors--classic! Other rooms downstairs shared a similar let's-do-something-different-with-the-walls fate. It was quite an asethetic when I got it.

I did most of the renovations about 10 years ago converting the three back rooms into a single great room/kitchen/dinning room which is the best for just hanging out. Bathrooms, electrical and plumbing were all renovated at that time. And the minimalist style was established.

Bathrooms are marble with great porcelin and nickel fixtures. The upstairs shower has been repeated called 'the best shower ever' by my guests due to its beautiful natural light and large, forever-hot water flow.

I've owned this house for 15 years and though I love the hustle of life in San Francisco, it's always been like a wonderful sanctuary to me, a place I can come back to luxuriate in. I hope you have a similar experience.

CARE/KIDS: As for children or entertaining in the house: the walls are flat white paint and some of the lath and plaster is 125 years old so it's a place to be appreciated for its aesthetics and not suitable for rough wear and tear. Please use your descretion to determine if this is the right place for you and your guests.

CAT: I have an extremely friendly and affectionate cat (part Lab?) named LuLu, that will be with me downstairs in the basement studio and outside, but she spends very little time in the house. With hardwood floors and professional cleaning, I haven't had an allergic complaint.
