Property description

Our High Lonesome log cabin stands 6,300' above sea level, deep in the Lolo National Forest in western Montana. It's located 11 miles from pavement, including 1 mile behind a locked U.S. Forest Service gate. Only the Forest Service and us have the key, offering utter privacy. It's completely off the grid--no power, phone service, Internet service or running water.

Of course, if you need power, you can connect our 1,250-watt inverter to your vehicle's battery via your jumper cables and use our long extension cord to run the resulting electricity into the one-room cabin. Bring a satellite phone to connect to the outside world. And High Lonesome does include an AM/FM radio that gets pretty marvelous reception at that elevation.

Four-wheel-drive is recommended for the final mile, and decent clearance is a must. Most SUVs and pickups will do fine, but Honda Accords and the like will probably high-center and get stuck.

A wood-fired stove provides heat. You can cook on either our Coleman propane stove or the antique wood-fired cookstove. Roughly half a cord of wood is cut and stacked alongside the cabin for use in both wood stoves.

Sleeping arrangements include a queen-size futon and bunk beds, all with new mattresses and bedding. Battery powered lanterns light the cabin at night.

The cabin is stocked with 10 gallons of bottled water, and the headwaters of Granite Creek run nearby. Store your coldstuffs in our cooler (bring ice!). The kitchen area doubles as washroom with a mirror and pitcher/wash basin. For other bathroom needs, an outhouse is located roughly 30 yards away.

Bring any pets you like! If hiking or horseback trips are your thing, the cabin makes an excellent base camp for excursions out to Pilot Knob, Rhodes Peak and beyond because it sits astride the Idaho-Montana state line trail. Rock climbers can explore the immense granite boulders scattered downstream throughout the Granite Creek drainage. Enjoy star gazing with zero light pollution. Hunt moose, bear and deer. From mid-December through April, snowmobile or cross-country ski the 500 miles of groomed trails that begin 1 mile below the cabin.

An 11 mile drive will bring you down to Lolo Hot Springs, which features naturally heated pools, a restaurant and bar, frisbee golf, horseback riding and more. Also nearby: the Lolo Trail, the actual trail Lewis and Clark followed as they passed through the area in 1805 during their historic expedition.

Or, simply kick back on High Lonesome's deck and listen to nothing but the wind in the trees, punctuated by the occasional squirrel, raven or wolf.
