Moloka'i: an island that will take your breath away, steal your heart and inspire a passion for life that you thought you could only dream of! An island that is 38 miles long and 10 miles wide, but don't let the size discourage you from coming! Moloka'i is filled with beauty that will capture your heart and soul, and the diversity will astonish you! You can leave your GPS at home; you can't get lost on Molokai!
From the time you board your island hopper plane and enjoy your tranquil 30 minute flight over the Pacific Ocean to the hidden paradise of Molokai, you will have already wound down from the fast-paced busy world that you left behind, and behind it is! When you get off the plane you will immediately notice a slower pace-laid back, nothing fancy, no one to impress, way of life. Slow down and enjoy Molokai; experience the culture, learn the history, relax, explore, be adventurous, take time to talk story with the locals, take a tour, go snorkeling, whale watching, surfing, fishing, hiking, cliff jumping, swim in a waterfall pool, walk or ride a mule down the cliff to Kalaupapa and hear the heart wrenching stories of the past and experience the hope of the future!
Drive to the west end beach of Papohaku, one of Hawaii's largest white sand beaches, 3 miles long and 100 yards wide, and believe it or not, many times you could be the only one there!
Enjoy snorkling from shore or by boat, Molokai's reef is like no other in Hawaii, nearly 30 miles long, protected from the ocean swells by the island of Lanai with very little commercial activity, a reef that is healthy and full of life and yours to explore! There are many secluded beaches from east end to west end- my family has many favorites depending on what we want to do that day. I recommend packing food and drinks for the day in your cooler to take wherever you decide to go, there is not an abundance of stores or restaurants on Molokai and the hours of operation are probably not what you are used to!
Dixie Maru Beach is one of the best swimming beaches located at the west end, past Papohaku beach, near the end of the road. Great for the whole family, private, peaceful and lined with shade trees.
Waialua Beach, east end, mile 19, my favorite to picnic, read a book, and collect sea glass. When my children were little, they would play in the small waves here, they learned to respect the ocean, and watch the waves, this is where they learned to surf.
If you enjoy hiking, my two favorites are the Forest and the Halawa Valley hike to the waterfalls. The Forest trail is located just west of Kaunakakai, you can drive back to the pavillion, park your car and hike in from there. I recommend a stop at the Molokai Visitor Centre in town for directions and a map, they are located on the main hwy on the left as you drive eastward through town towards the condo. Hours of operation are limited, I believe they close for the day at noon! Don't forget your camera! You will walk through rain forests, cross rivers, view cascading waterfalls and so much more, all hidden in the interior of this amazing island! Halawa Valley is at the very end of the road of the east end, this is where you will hike into the waterfall and enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool below. Book a guided tour for this hike and learn the history of the people of Molokai.
There really is all you need on this island but you have to remember I said, 'need' not want! I would describe Kaunakakai like an old Hawaiian cowboy town; rustic, simple, laid back, friendly and beautiful, an experience you will never forget, it will draw you back time and time again, giving you a deep desire to have what they have, the spirit of Aloha! I suggest picking up a few groceries on your way through town from the airport, enough for a day or so until you plan out your time here, this will save you a trip back to town and the possibility of the stores being closed. You will find all you need for your stay, groceries, restaurants, tourist information, Molokai Fish and Dive for adventures, equipment rentals and purchases, snacks, gas, souvenirs, etc., and some nice local shops.
I forgot to mention, Molokai hot bread, it's an evening experience that has become a family tradition. Open 6 nights a week, I think it's closed on Monday nights. Opens at 8pm, take the alley behind the bakery to a window where you can place your order, you can order a variety delicious items that they will stuff inside your freshly baked bread. We like to drive down to the wharf and enjoy the bread ocean side under the stars!
There is so much here for everyone to enjoy and experience, something for people of all ages. Don't miss out on not only the experience of a life time but the experience that might change your life forever!!!
Year Purchased: 2013
About the owner: I came to Molokai for the very first time in 2001, I spent six amazing days exploring the island, by the end of the trip I had bought a condo at Wavecrest Resort. I moved to Molokai with my three young children a few months later and spent the next three years there raising my family and making a new life for us. We all learned a new way of life and a new culture. My children attended Kilohana School located at the east end and I opened up a coffee shop and Christian book store in town. We learned to live a simple life style and we learned the difference between needs and wants.
We moved back to Ontario, Canada in 2005 but a part of us will always be Molokaiians. We continued year after year to return to Molokai to visit family and friends and the place we once called home. I returned earlier this year (2013), to make some decisions about a piece of property that I own on the east end. On my flight home I decided I would look into buying a condo again as a place to return to and call home, as well as a place that I could share with others, so that they could call it home as well!
