Evergreen cottage description
Fool's Gold is a one bedroom, one bathroom cottage on Snyder Mountain 8700 feet up. It's a sunny south facing hacienda with a deck and scenic mountain views that overlooks protected BLM land making wildlife viewing incredible.
Fool's Gold Cottage is located on the border of both Jefferson and Clear Creek Counties convenient to many of the outdoor activities both counties have to offer: rafting, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, running, mountaineering, mountain climbing, zip lining, elite athletic training, and hunting to name a few. If you want to visit Denver, it's only a 50 minute drive. There are also plenty of trails right by the cottage.
Fool's Gold was built in the 1980s. Her sister, Goldie, the home we currently live in 150 feet from Fool's Gold, was built in the early 1970s and was the first house in the area. The paperwork we have on the home has President Grover Cleveland's signature on it when he signed the land over to be developed!
When Fool's Gold was built, it was basically a framed house with water, a kitchen, a bathroom with a shower pan, sink and toilet, and electricity. There was not any drywall or flooring. I used her for a while as my office until a neck injury prevented me for continuing that line of work. We have worked hard over the last ten years to get her ready for others to enjoy. We are currently remodeling Goldie, our current house, who will become a prospective vacation rental in 2016, and Tailings, a one bedroom studio apartment will be a rental March 2014 (listed on VRBO).
The roads to Fool's Gold are paved until you reach our subdivision. There is less than one mile of dirt roads to the cottage itself. Front wheel drive cars do just fine up here and the roads are well maintained.
For those of you coming back for an update, Fool's Gold upgrades have been completed and now it is just putting on/in the cosmetic features to have her completely finished by summer 2014.
*Because of the mountainous terrain, and being in the mountains in general, please make sure that the cottage would be suitable for your family if you have children under the age of six, are elderly, or have a physical disability.* The cottage is VERY CLEAN and FUNCTIONAL, which you will see by the photos.
Up to one dog (two dogs with approval) is allowed on the property for an additional pet rent charge ($10/day to $25/day, dependent upon the number of days staying and the type/size of the dog). We do have dogs on the property and they are in a separate fenced in area and we are very respectful in terms of barking, etc.
We hope you stay with us and become a part of the Mile and a Half Club!

A week in the hills
A week in the hills
We stayed for a week and wanted something better than a hotel...well, Fool's Gold certainly fit the bill! The listing was accurate and we got what we thought we were getting. The property was clean and well maintained. Perhaps a little rough around the edges in a places, but the charm and character of the place made it a delightful place to stay. As the description intimates, it's a work in progress, but by no means is the place not complete. The cottage has modern appliances, a kitchen fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc. Additionally, the shower is hot, the bed and linens soft and comfy. The full size fridge allows stocking as much food as you want. There is a small toaster over, microwave and a stove top thing for heating water, soup, etc. The washer/dryer is a nice convenience (though it did break, but the owners were very responsive to resolution). Tracey was communicative and very friendly (and even provided us with fresh laid eggs from her chickens!). The description does say it can sleep up to 4, but it would be awfully cramped. For two people for a nice cozy little getaway - perfect. As far as location, Fool's Gold is 4 miles from a nice hiking/mtn biking trail. A couple miles further and you have shopping, food, etc. It was about a 15/20 min drive or so into the heart of Evergreen which is where the lake is. There are hiking trails all over the place, ski rentals, dining (Indian, Mexican, American, Vietnamese, Italian - all quality dining with good ambience) and friendly people. Yes, we'd stay there again (if we don't move out there, that is :) ).

Owner response: Thank you so much Robert for the wonderful review! I am glad that the cottage met your expectations and again I felt so bad about the washer/dryer, but I was glad I was able to come up with a solution! The surrounding area of the cottage is in continual upgrade and with the winter months, it gets even more challenging (it's also a challenge that we don't have a garage - yet!). Now that it is getting warmer (yay!), the area between Fool's Gold and Goldie will become a general BBQ area and construction between the homes will be complete. If you do not move to CO - we would certainly love to have you stay with us again! Thank you Robert! :)
Tracey, Thank you so much for the hospitality. The cottage was perfect for us. A getaway from the city was so needed, and your warm cozy cottage was exactly what the doctor ordered. You were incredibly helpful, and especially kind. We will definitely come back to visit again. It is close enough to the city to have some fun, and far enough in to feel miles away. Thank again so much for the amazing vacation. Liela and Tony

Great time in Evergreen!
Great time in Evergreen!
Tracey, My family and I had a great time at your cottage. It was great meeting you and talking with you. Your directions to the cabin were great as we had no problems finding the cabin in the dark. The area around the cabin is beautiful and nice and peaceful. You're doing a great job renovating the cabin. Thank you, Rodney

From: Evan Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2014 11:23 AM To: Tracey Smith Subject: Fool's Gold Cottage Tracey, Thank you so much, it was great! We had fantastic rest and good fun in the area (we happened upon Ice Fest! and also had a great 4 mile hike over at Maxwell Falls Trail). The place was wonderful and quite cozy. Only addition we'd probably request is a food tray for eating upstairs. We were careful as we could be with crumbs, but a tray would help methinks (and maybe there was one and I just couldn't find it!). Thanks so much! The place was easy to find too! Best Regards, Evan From: Tracey Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2014 12:30 PM To: Evan Subject: Fool's Gold Cottage Hello Evan! I hope you had a safe trip back to Texas! We enjoyed having you here and I am glad you had a great time in Evergreen. I have never been to the Ice Fest b/c I cannot ice skate anymore, but it does sound like a lot of fun! Maybe now that my neck is finally fixed, I can enjoy that someday. ? I will definitely get food trays for upstairs – I never even thought of that! Thank you for the suggestion. Thank you once again for staying at Fool’s Gold Cottage and I hope you come back and visit us again soon. Ciao for now and Happy New Year! cute cabin, nicely renovated and very spacious! Owners are super friendly. Bonus: They watched our dog when we were out. Only negatives: No real oven, and the shower head is very low (not for tall people). Overall, nice getaway in the mountains for a reasonable price compared to other cabin prices in the Evergreen area. Would recommend staying there!

Owner response: Thank you Joseph for the nice review! I wanted to let you know that we raised one of the shower heads 11 inches, so that should solve that issue. :) Unfortunately, we are not allowed to have an oven, but as you know, we do have a cook-top NuWave Oven which cooks up to a 20 pound turkey, small toaster oven, small microwave and three burner counter top stove. I wish we could have an oven.. :( Again, thank you for your review and we look forward to seeing you again soon! Tracey Smith Property Manager

Great idea and effort and nice owners, but the path is steep, dark and slick in the winter, the clothes dryer is worthless and bring your own shower soap as none is provided. It also needs a bigger useable table in the large entry area and a real sofa sleeper with cable TV (with larger TV) in the living room area. Next time we'll spend a little more to stay in a hotel.

Owner response: Due to the fact that we live in rural Rocky Mountains, we do our very best to inform potential guests of the terrain and other pertinent need to know information about the cottage through our ad on VRBO, our pictures of the property and surrounding area, and information sent to all tenants after booking and prior to arrival. That information informs guests about the washer/dryer (it’s an energy efficient machine, so it takes a long time to dry), the downstairs TV, and Internet, to name a few. We do our very best to make the walkway up to the cottage safe and usable, especially when it snows and is icy by shoveling and putting down lots of ice melt. We provide ice melt for our guests as Mother Nature can take over if we are not here. We do have plans to add stronger lighting up the walkway, but winter is preventing us for working on that right now, so flashlights are provided to our guests to assist them up the walkway. We are sorry to hear that there was not any soap in the shower, but I do hope that mouthwash, toothpaste, hand soap, cotton balls, and Q-tips were provided to you. I will make sure housekeeping double checks that. We live next door and invite anyone staying to inform us of any issues they may have, such as no soap, so we can take care of them as quickly as possible. We are self-funded and we love our little cottage, so we will continue to make improvements to the cottage, the furnishings and the surrounding terrain as weather and money permits. We appreciate your suggestions and will take them to heart. We agree that if you are concerned about mountain conditions; then a hotel in town would be a better alternative.

About the owner: Tracey is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CA. She paid her way through college working at a resort hotel in Pismo Beach. After graduating, she sold everything she owned and moved to Hawaii. She obtained a sales position at the Ritz-Carlton and was part of the team that won the prestigious Malcolm-Baldridge Quality Award. After spending a year in Hawaii (1992 to 1993), she moved to Colorado and it has been her home ever since. Larry attended the University of Texas on a running scholarship. He has been an elite athlete for the majority of his life running his first marathon when he was 12 years old. He has run numerous marathons and races since and came to Colorado in 1992 to train for the 2000 Olympics. He came close; 20 seconds off the time needed to qualify in the Steeplechase. He is currently training for the Leadville 100 mile race. He loves living up here as it is a perfect training ground right in his own backyard. Tracey and Larry have a daughter named Oakley and three dogs: Bruce Lee, Chow Chow; Queen Snortiffa, Bulldogge; and Cleo Pattra, Great Dane Mix.
Why the Owner Chose Evergreen:
Evergreen is a great place to live! It's rural enough, yet close enough to urban offerings. The property's views will not change because it is BLM land and there are many trails within a mile of the property for outdoor enthusiasts. We love it here and we will always consider Evergreen our true home. The only reason we have big city traffic jams is due to elk crossings!!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
When we first bought these homes, they were basically wooden tents. We have worked hard over the last 10 years to build these home from the ground floor with lots of sweat, tears (dust in our eyes, hammers hitting the fingers, bruises everywhere) and love. We are so glad that we can share our place with you and we hope you are just as inspired to pursue your dreams as we were we saw it here.
