Other Activities: Golf, Skiing, Tennis (5 km), Horse Riding
Golf: In Lunigiana history is evident in abundance, the wealth of surviving castles from the middle ages dot the landscape amongst them at Bagnone and Fosdinovo, many well preserved others in ruins, Sarzana (a somewhat undiscovered gem to rival Lucca) near the Ligurian Riviera has two, it is a delight with good restaurants, trattorias, bars and sophisticated night life, excellent shopping, an antique market, fashionable fun loving Italians nightly thronging its beautiful streets, a wonderful atmosphere to experience.
Fivizzano, a walled Renaisance town close to the villa has perhaps the finest castle at Verrucola, Fivizzano famous for its events (approx 50) throughout the year; in summer medieval archery, jousting, dancing and flag throwing, classical music evenings both choral and orchestral. The Sapori (taste) food festival (May-June) celebrates the best of the organic/artisan foods and wines of Lunigiana and its neighbours.
Romanesque churches and baroque palaces are throughout the region. There are many museums, in Pontremoli one devoted to the ‘stelle’ the stone statues peculiar to the area. Close by are the restorative thermal waters and caves of Equ Terme, at Frignoli the Botanical Gardens showing the huge variety of indigenous plants. Lunigiana is truly unique in Europe so well placed between mountain and sea yet a still (relatively) undiscovered retreat
