Walpole estate description
Originally the Alexander Watkins' Tavern, now the Hooper Mansion, was erected in 1795 by Alexander Watkins who came from Pomfret, Connecticut in 1777. Eventually ownership transferred to the Hoopers, a prominent family in Walpole. George Levi Hooper gave the land and the buildings in trust to the Town of Walpole. Once a working farm, the beautiful landscape of green rolling hills and stone walls was transformed into a classic golf course in 1927 by golf course designer Wayne Stiles. The Hooper Golf Course is still recognized as one of America's top 9-hole golf courses today.
The Mansion provides 3 individualized dining rooms with seating configurations to accommodate 56 (20/20/16) people along with a bar room overlooking the historic greens of the Hooper Golf Course. There is a fully appointed commercial kitchen. The screened in, wrap around porch with beautiful views of the course, surrounding foliage and Vermont mountain range can accommodate another 60 people. We can custom configure the spaces for your special celebration. You pick your provider for food, music and entertainment. We can introduce you to outstanding caterers, photographers, florists and local officiants.
The second floor of the mansion is living space for the family. There are four bedrooms comfortably appointed with original 19th century furnishings. Three of the four rooms are very large and have private baths. The “Honeymoon Suite” has a double canopy bed with private bath. Two additional rooms have twin beds each and our maid’s quarter has a double bed with access to a shared bathroom. Bed configurations can be adjusted if you have special needs. Just outside the rooms is a lovely sitting area to relax and visit or read a book.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway, a quiet place to conduct a business retreat, a golf outing with college buddies, an elegant wedding or other celebration with family and friends, the Hooper Mansion can offer you an unparalleled backdrop of historic charm to highlight your special trip.
Use the house as a base to explore the many nearby diversions in Keene, Claremont, Putney, Ludlow, Killington & Brattleboro. Seasonally, you will find fireworks displays, car & motocross racing, county fairs, gallery walks, wine & beer festivals, live entertainment at the local theaters and outdoor venues, as well as farmers markets, concerts on the green and pumpkin festivals. During the fall, enjoy the classic New England foliage any number of ways. Hike, drive, horseback ride, or motorcycle. There are many choices for pick-your-own farms & orchards. There are numerous ski areas with scenic thrill rides and zip lines within a one hour ride as well as multiple golf courses.
We’d love to help you plan your special trip and are available for questions/needs during your stay. Please be advised that the first floor is handicap accessible, however the second floor is not.

Beautiful former stage coach tavern located on a nine hole semi-private golf course in the Connecticut River valley. I would highly recommend it for anyone traveling to the valley region for golf, leaf peeping or skiing. We rented the entire mansion for wedding guests.
