Laupahoehoe house description
Hale Polu (Blue House) is perfectly located on the Hamakua Coast in Laupahoehoe, half way between Hilo and historic Honoka'a. This is a three bedroom, two bathroom home perched on the lower slopes of Mauna Kea, less than a quarter mile from the coastal cliffs and blue Pacific Ocean. There are fantastic ocean views from the comfortable lanai, the living room, and from two of the three bedrooms. The house sits on a large lot with over half an acre of grassy slope planted with mangoes, white pineapples, avocados, cheremoya, and kukui nuts. This is where you'll find the real Hawaii; friendly people, farmers' markets, small town restaurants, and a slow, relaxing pace of life.
Laupahoehoe is an old plantation town from the days when sugar cane dominated Big Island agriculture. What's left is a string of small towns strung along the emerald green Hamakua Coast. From our blue house you can drive 30 minutes south along the coast to Hilo for shopping, kayaking in Hilo Bay, and snorkeling at Richardson Park. Going north along the coast will take you to historic Honoka'a (about a 25 minute drive) where you can check out old downtown before peeling off to nearby Waipio Valley, a scenic wonder you can explore by foot, horseback, or by horse drawn wagon. On the way back, be sure to stop at the TEX Cafe in Honoka'a for the malasadas (scrumptious Portuguese donuts). About 45 minutes north from the house is Waimea, the town in the mists of the Kohala Mountains famous for cool nights, the Cherry Festival, and pancakes the size of hubcaps at the Hawaiian Style Cafe. Other places within easy driving distance from Hale Polu are: Umauma zip line -10 minutes, Akaka Falls - 15 minutes, Kohala's white sand beaches (Mauna Kea Beach, Hapuna Beach) - 1 hour, and Volcanoes National Park - 1 hour, 15 min.
Or you could just stay home at Hale Polu, open all the windows, and read a good book with the Pacific Trade Winds wafting through the house. Just down the hill – about a 10 minute walk – is the 50's Cafe where you can get a Hawaiian Loco Moco or a burger and fries. And remember, our kitchen is fully equipped and ready for you to apply your culinary talents to the locally grown foods you can find at local farmers markets. E komo mai (welcome).
Hale Polu is one of eight homes on a private street, all on large lots with great separation for peace and quiet. The neighbors are friendly and not obtrusive.
Note: We have Direct TV cable service and a TV with built-in DVD. We also have a high speed wi-fi internet connection for laptops, tablets and mobile devices. Cell phone service is excellent for most providers.
This is a newly furnished house with brand new queen beds, sleeper sofa, linens, towels, dining set, kitchen ware, microwave and living room furniture.

Everything One Could Ask For and Expect.
Everything One Could Ask For and Expect.
My wife and I stayed here for 3 wonderful weeks 10/23-11/12/13. We were the first guests of the new owners. While here we enjoyed the spectacular views of the ocean from almost 500 ASL elevation on the upslope side of the Hamakua Coast. We did most of the things the owners suggest. This was our 3rd vacation on the Big Island. Laupahoehoe was an ideal location for us, with multiple trips to Hilo to the south and Waimea to the north almost equal distance. While there, or just a couple days after, the owners added several new items to make our and others' stay more comfortable including Direct TV satellite, a HDTV, nice brand new coffee maker, a 3rd queen sized bed, a few more furniture items, and more dishes and utensils. Most all the furniture is new, including the beds. The property is beautiful and just like described here on the website and like the pictures. Though I don't feel anything is lacking for most people's needs, if you think of something, just ask the owners and they may just accommodate. Doesn't hurt to ask, particularly if it will also benefit them and other renters. We made two trips to Kilauea, a trip via Hilo and Saddle Rd. to the summit of Mauna Kea, multiple trips to Hilo, Waimea, Volcano National Park, Kailua Kona (beaches at Spencer State Beach and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel beach, Costco). The Ahalanui Park, "The Warm Ponds'' is well worth the trip out past Pahoa to the coast. The listing is very accurate and the owners are to be congratulated on the excellent descriptions and suggestions. The photos depict the property very well. The property is very clean and very well maintained. I have and will continue to recommend this house to friends and relatives. Thank you Steve and Edna for letting us enjoy your house for 3 weeks.

About the owner: We live in Phoenix but bought this house to enjoy the very best part of the Big Island. We're both college grads and plan to retire in Hawaii in this little slice of paradise.
Why the Owner Chose Laupahoehoe:
Phoenix gets a little hot in the summers so my wife wanted to get a place escape the heat and enjoy the simple lifestyle she grew up with. She loves the Hamakua Coast because it's so green and the ocean is always in view. The Trade Winds keep things cool; at night temperatures drop into the mid to high 60's.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The lanai (patio) is the best thing about this house because of the ocean views and constant Trade Winds. Also the big lot with over a half acre of mown grass, a huge mango tree, avocado tree, and pineapples. The Big Island is so laid back . . . you'll love the local vibe.
