The perfect "mini-moon" vacation home...
The perfect "mini-moon" vacation home...
My husband and I wanted to take a weekend “mini-moon”, but didn’t want to travel too far. Neither of us had been to Augusta, GA, and we decided to go explore the history and arts of this city by the river. In our communication with the owner of the Chandler house, we were excited to get acquainted with “The Old Girl” as she was called. We were not disappointed when we found the wrought iron gate surrounding a 1920’s bungalow style house. We stopped at the side gate to unload our bags. The front porch includes a wrought iron fenced in yard, manicured gardens, high tongue and grooved wooden ceiling and Craftsman style architecture. We entered the front door into the beautiful living room that is perfectly appointed with high ceilings and wood floors. Every room invites you to rest, relax, and absorb Augusta’s finest – history and art and of course, golf! The house is huge and will sleep a lot of people, but we were on a romantic getaway and chose the back bedroom on the main floor. However, I couldn’t resist the gorgeous claw foot tub on the 2nd floor – it comes HIGHLY recommended! The attention to detail throughout the home left me feeling nostalgic, elegant and excited to enter the next room to experience it’s beauty and style! The kitchen is wonderful and we found ourselves right at home. Really love the large deck in the back yard too, complete with putting station. There are plenty of little nooks to find quiet time to read, listen to music, enjoy the artwork, and large rooms that would host entire families – perfect for any gathering! By the time we left, we felt so relaxed!!! This wonderful “Old Girl” has more than just the comforts of home – it is stunning. We had gotten several recommendations for shops and restaurants from the owner, and were delighted to find that the home is conveniently located to everything we were there to find: antique shops (I found a vintage 1960 hard shell complete set of Samsonite luggage in perfect condition!), art galleries, the Artists Market on the Riverfront, lovely old antebellum homes, tons of local businesses and restaurants who were so friendly. We shopped contentedly all Saturday, watched football at "home", and set out for dinner at a restaurant everyone in town seemed agree was the best around: Frog Hollow. I must say that this dinner completed our perfect “mini-moon” vacation and we left Sunday feeling as if we had just been spoiled by Augusta, GA!

About the owner: Jimmie and Andy's primary residence is presently in Atlanta, GA, but have a daughter in nursing school at Augusta State, and spend as much time as possible in Augusta, for family time, golf and friends.
Why the Owner Chose Augusta:
Acquiring Chandler House was a dream come true for Jimmie, who always loved the charm and uniqueness of the homes of yesteryear. And since it was in Augusta, GA Land of Golf, she didn't have a difficult time convincing her husband Andrew. He threw the golf clubs in the back of the car and headed to Augusta to sign on the dotted line. His first purchase was a putting green for the back deck. As the plaster specialist commented, 'The house has good bones.' Still the restoration took 2 years, 3 times longer than anticipated, and cost 3 times as much as budgeted, and was a labor of love. It has been said by many visitors that you can feel the love. We could not have a better compliment.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Historic Summerville area is simply beautiful, with massive trees lining the streets, and unique homes of centuries past. Minutes from downtown, medical district, Augusta National, and Augusta State. The rooms are large and spacious, with their high ceilings, the original hardwood floors, the modern, sunny kitchen, the sleep porch, original depression glass, 2 fire places, and large deck out back, with off street parking.
