Year Purchased: 1996
About: I am a military widow with six kids. When my husband was killed on a mission, we needed a place to heal and begin our lives anew. We took a family vote, and all wanted to move to Big Island, where our cousins lived. I grew up in Yosemite National Park, and Hawaii Island
Why Hapuna Beach: Our enchanting little Village was originally built to house employees of the world-famous Mauna Kea Hotel. Shortly after achieving statehood, Hawaii's Governor William Quinn invited Laurence S. Rockefeller to visit Big Island and look for sites for potential resorts. Quinn knew that Rockefeller was a conservationist, and believed that buildings should meld gently into natural surroundings, and enhance, not harm, the area.
The Unique Benefits at this House: Mr. Rockefeller went for a swim at Kauna'oa Beach (where you can swim after a 5 minute drive from this house), and fell in love with the gentle water and majestic view of the volcano called Mauna Kea. The beautiful hotel followed, and our Village after that, to house employees. Some of our neighbors still work there, and many of us enjoy a drink at the hotel, dinner, or lunch at the golf course. And the beach is open to the public and as pristine as it was when Mr. Rockefeller fell in love with it!
We are pleased to honor the spirit of conservation of the ai'na (land) and our nexus to the magnificent Mauna Kea Hotel. We are also honored to share our home with treasured guests, and hope you enjoy all of the wonders and amenities that are just a short drive away.'
