Let us arrange your Game Park Visits: Kenya is rightly famed for its wildlife National Parks. From the house, suggested visits include :
Tsavo. Tsavo landscapes are some of the most dramatic in Kenya, the animals are that bit wilder and the parks receive comparatively few visitors. They are about 2.5 hours drive away, off the main Mombasa – Nairobi highway. You see herds of elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffe, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, ostrich, warthogs, antelopes and gazelles. We can arrange day trips or overnight stays in the Park lodges.
Masai Mara We can arrange for you to fly from nearby Diani Airstrip to the world famous Masai Mara reserve, with its annual wildebeest migration. This typically involves a stay several nights overnight in the park.
Dolphin spotting at Wasini A trip to Wasini Island – an eco-tourist destination – which is about 90 minutes drive south, involves a day out with a dhow trip to take in dolphin spotting, good coral reef snorkeling & an excellent lunch on one of the small islands.
Enjoy the Sea Life and Watersports: Snorkelling You can snorkel off the beach or at a number of nearby sites where there is plenty of coral and tropical coral fish.
Scuba Diving If you are interested in Scuba diving, we work with the best Dive Centres in Diani and can arrange this for you. There are some excellent coral reef dive sites, including an interesting wreck, where you can see turtles, octopus, nudibranchs, anemones and a huge range of fish. You frequently see dolphins on your way out to the dive sites, which sometimes play by the boat as it travels along.
The Scuba centre we use also offers a full range of PADI courses and qualificaton, plus “try dives” for newcomers to the sport.
Deep Sea Fishing There is deep sea fishing for marlin, sailfish and tuna at Shimoni, which can be arranged with some excellent and very experienced crews.
Water sports There are jet skis, windsurfing and kite surfing at Diani, which we can arrange for you. This includes courses for those interested but inexperienced.
Sea and bird life: For any interested naturalist, there are a wide range of places to explore. The intertidal lagoon between the beach and the fringing reef at low tide is full of life and worth exploring both at day and at night. Regular sightings include octopus, cuttle fish, tiger, lynx and gold ring cowries, nudibranchs, moray eels, crabs, snake eels, sea hares and varieties of sea urchin. A group of Marine Biologists stay each year, who are building up a guide to the underwater flora and fauna. There are a range of identification books at the house.
There are a mass of wading birds working the intertidal zone at low tide, including sacred ibis, the raucous haddeda ibis, egrets, herons, storks and many smaller birds, They are gradually pushed in toward the beach as the tide comes in, making it easy to get close to them. You may see pied kingfishers fishing at high tide too. In the garden, there are lilac breasted rollers, finches, wagtails and other small birds.
The bedrooms are spacious, with high vaulted ceilings and an ensuite bathroom. Each one has a shared balcony, either facing east toward the sea and the sunrise - or inland and west toward the sunset.
All bedrooms have a ceiling fan and are also air conditioned - but I usually sleep with just the breeze from the sea and the sounds of the wind in the coconut palms and the low rumble of the surf on the offshore reef.
The beds are made from local mvule hardwood and are '4 poster' to carry the mosquito net that then drops down vertically. Each bedroom also has extensive built in wardrobes made from cedar wood.
There is also a single bed downstairs in the study, with mosquito net and fan....moreless
The bathrooms are all modern, with Italian tiled floors and walls. The showers are all pumped and the water is soft rain water from our own catchment and the hot is solar heated. There is a large bathroom cabinet with mirrored door above the basin in each and an electric shaver point....moreless

A beautiful, recently built, modern beach house. The house is situated on a 2 acre plot, fronting a white coral sand beach, surrounded by coconut palms, frangipani trees and bougainvillea. It is about 2 miles south of Mombasa Island, on the Kenya coast, about 45 minutes drive from the airport. The beach is peaceful – there are no big hotels nearby and therefore no beach boys. There is a lovely swimming pool with a big shallow end for children to play in safely.
There are lots of good beachside and other restaurants and bars about 30 minutes drive down the coast at Diani.
There are also good supermarkets just across the ferry on Mombasa Island and at Diani. The staff will buy local fresh fish, fresh fruit and vegetables for you and will also do the supermarket shopping for you.

Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: I grew up in Mombasa and went to school in Kenya, then going on to University in the UK and worked there, visiting my parents who were still living in Kenya. I found the beach plot and built the house in 2008/9 and currently split my time between work in the Uk and the house on the beach. I'm a keen amateur marine biologist and photograph and record the varied marine species on the coast, loading them onto the Marine Species section of the house website www.sand-and-shells.com. I have a special week each year when a group of marine biologists stay, diving and walking the intertidal zone, collecting and photographing specimens.
Why the Owner Chose Mombasa: Growing up on the Kenya coast, I'd always wanted to have a house of my own on the beach. I spent a lot of time snorkelling off Shelley beach as a kid, so knew it well. I also wanted a place away from the hotels and the persistent annoyance of the beach boys that haunt the resort areas. This big plot on the beach was ideal and I built the house 2 stories high to give fantastic views across the Indian Ocean. It is built with a really big veranda and balcony, so you can be outside, but in the welcome shade, while catching the cooling breeze off the sea.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: Lovely house, peaceful and beautiful location, close to Mombasa.
