Marais 'Country Cottage in Heart of Paris' Garden Apartment
- Minimum stay:N/A

- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Le Marais, 3rd arrondissement, Paris, France. On Rue Charlot. Ground floor on garden courtyard. Sleeps two to four.
This beautiful completely renovated garden apartment is located off the historic courtyard of a classic Parisian building in the Marais, among the oldest in Paris. The age of it will be obvious when you first see the exposed posts and beams on the wall of the courtyard itself, recalling the way Paris looked in the 17th century.
The apartment has the feel of a country cottage in the heart of Paris, with its short pitch of slate roof and its double French doors and French windows opening onto the garden. All in all, its location makes it a one-of-a-kind, romantic oasis of calm in the Marais.
Renovated by a designer with international travelers in mind, the result is a successful amalgam of old world charm and modern style. The apartment consists of one big room that serves as bedroom and living area, a separate and fully equipped kitchen, and a full deluxe bath. In the main room and bath are beautiful exposed stone walls, and the original thick oak beams are exposed on the ceiling as well.
The floor has wide oak boards in the main room, with a welcoming antique kilim rug, and antique stone tile in the kitchen and bath. Throughout there are clean lines and harmonious touches of color, giving a very aesthetically pleasing, peaceful ambience.
Hand carving graces the antique bed frame, while the bed itself is brand new and of the highest quality. For bedding, there is a down comforter, 100% cotton blankets, 100% cotton sheets, and four French pillows. The exceptional quiet of this apartment will further enhance sleep. The sofa is large and very comfortable, and hides a comfortable full-sized bed should it be needed. A small Paris bistro style table sits by the window for meals, and a wooden table serves as a small desk.
There is a TV with more than 40 digital channels including CNN and BBC, a DVD/CD/MP3 player with radio, a cordless phone, and an answering machine. A high speed WiFi Internet connection is available if you have a computer. You will also find a few classical and jazz CD’s, several DVDs (including movies that take place in Paris), a selection of interesting books, including many on Paris and France, and reading lamps.
The kitchen has lots of charm and modern appliances: a full-size oven, four burner stovetop, built-in refrigerator with freezer, microwave, toaster, hand mixer, and coffee maker. It is also well-equipped with all utensils for cooking and eating. The bath is beautifully done with deluxe modern fixtures, a large bathtub, a deluxe shower (it’s superb!), and both a washing machine and dryer tucked away in a closet. A hidden extra is a double-size hot water heater, so you should not run out. There is also a hair dryer, iron and ironing board, and vacuum cleaner. All linens, towels, and soap are supplied.
Tucked away on the corner of rue Charlot you will find a secret place only locals know about - the wonderful little open air Marche des Enfants Rouge, recently renovated but on the site of the oldest market in Paris.
Rue Bretagne has its own offering of excellent shops including butchers, bakers, traiteurs, wine, fruits and vegetables, and right on the corner one of the best fromagers (cheese shops) in the city. There is also a large supermarket conveniently nearby.
The neighborhood is chock-full of antique shops, funky designers, and art galleries on the narrow streets. There are many great little restaurants and cafes with terraces, as well as charming Parisian parks. The Picasso Museum is literally just around the corner, as is all the rest that the Marais has to offer, from the magnificent Hotels Particuliers (17th century city mansions), many housing museums, to the famous Place des Vosges.
The apartment is very secure: The neighborhood is very safe. To get in the building requires both a code to get in the main door and then a key to get through an iron security gate. The door of the apartment itself has a high security lock. The windows have security blinds that close tightly over them if you want to leave for any length of time, and the windows themselves also have locks. In short, there are more security features than you need! Especially for this lovely, quiet neighborhood.
What we offer our guests: We will answer whatever questions you have before you arrive, and will provide detailed instructions for getting to the apartment whether you are arriving by plane, train, or auto. We will be there to meet you, help with your luggage, show you into the apartment and explain how everything works. We will give you a brief introduction to your neighborhood so you know where important things are (like the best bakery!), and can also give recommendations for the best little hard-to-find restaurants, and help make reservations if you would like. If you have any problems in Paris, we’ll try to help. Our goal is to help you live in the neighborhood like a local French person, an experience you would never have in a hotel. Also, we go out of our way to make early check-ins and later check-outs possible. We always manage to make it work out well for our visitors, minimizing hassle. We also routinely organize taxis for the day of departure -- they come right to the door to pick you up.
IMPORTANT CONTACT INFORMATION: The best way to contact us initially is by email. Please just fill out the VRBO form. We will respond as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hours. If you do not receive a reply, please call us as there may have been a problem with the reception of the email.

If you feel, as we do, that one of the best travel experiences is settling in like a resident, then this is a perfect apartment for you, as it was for us. Walking distance to museums, restaurants, cafes, the Metro, shopping, parks and squares for strolling - and of course all kinds of markets. The apartment is nicely furnished and finished, as you can see in the photos, and kitchen is incredibly well equipped, including some staples, so you can easily prepare terrific French meals. Bedding and linen were ample, crisp, clean and attractive, the bed comfortable (though note: it is a double, not a queen), the courtyard setting both beautiful, and beautifully quiet. Owners and guests have contributed to a remarkable library of maps, brochures, guidebooks and historical work about Paris, as well as some pretty great vacation fiction. There's even a library of dvds and cds to enjoy while you're recharging your batteries. To pick one word: "thoughtful." Really careful thought has gone into this welcoming and comfortable apartment, and the owner is cheerful and responsive to any & all questions. Honestly, I wish we could stay here every year! (In addition to the "Recommended For" categories we've checked, this studio might work well for a couple traveling with a single child.)Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My wife and I just spent 5 nights in this apartment during our trip to Paris. Our arrival at the apartment was very well organized by the owner. With all of the detailed info we were provided, it seemed as if we were going to visit a very familiar place. There were absolutely no problems. The apartment was exactly as described in the ad. It was very comfortable with more than enough space but still quite cozy. There is a well equipped kitchen with an oven, microwave and refrigerator. We had all the utensils we could need available to us. We usually brought food back from the markets and grocers around the corner to enjoy in the apartment. The living area is quite comfortable as well with a bed, sofa bed, desk, table and entertainment center. There were even plenty of dvd's to watch and umbrellas for our use. The apartment overlooks a bright courtyard with plenty of flowers and plants. My wife and I were also happy with how quiet the area was at all times. We spent most days out in the city with lots of crowds. It was really nice to get back to the apartment and enjoy the quiet. Anyone staying here will enjoy plenty to do in the marais. We were in walking distance to the Pompidou Centre, Place des Vosges, Marché des Enfants Rouge, the metro and lots of good restaurants. There were also plenty of boutiques around for those looking to do some shopping. This was much better than a hotel experience and we would recommend this apartment to anyone looking to visit Paris. Thanks for a great time Chris.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: You're welcome! And thank you for being the perfect guests. All the best, Chris

Really, there isn't a lot to add to all the other reviews, which was the reason for us choosing Chris' apartment. This characterful ground floor apartment is loaded with charm (but not tatty-needing-an-upgrade-charm) and well maintained, and blessed with a lovely outlook onto a little garden courtyard. It is quiet and secure and a great base for Paris if you are wanting the Marais district. We loved the clean, modern kitchenette area, and large comfortable bath with lots of hot water. It's conveniently located a few blocks walk from several different Metro lines. When we needed help, it was great that Chris was there at the end of the phone, and very capable and sincere. Included phone, WIFI, TV, DVD's and library of books made this a "will be back again" apartment for us. Heating worked well for our January stay! Owner is more than helpful, and provides loads of information, maps and full file on how to work everything.Recommended for: People with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We're glad you survived the taxi strike! If this was the "everything went wrong" trip, then surely the next will be opposite! We'd be pleased to have you back. Cheers, Chris

It was such a perfect spot for our New Year's adventure with our 2 young daughters. It was easy to get in and out of. The neighborhood was fun to investigate and we found our favorite patisserie, Chez Manon, right around the corner. Chris out did himself and helped us find a wonderful restaurant (Le Dindon En Laisse) to celebrate the New Year in. He even mapped out how to get there and q wonderful walk back to enjoy that special night. Whenever we were in doubt the "black book" was there to offer help and advice and our girls even enjoyed reading it. Thanks for all of your attention and for opening your lovely apartment to us. We can't wait to plan another trip back. Also, having a washer and dryer was an added bonus!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I was happy to help, and I'm glad the plans for New Years went off well, as it really can be a challenge in Paris. All the best to you and your family! Chris

The apartment at Rue Charlot was the perfect spot for my week long stay in Paris in November. The location is ideal, in a quiet part of the Marais. As it is conveniently located near subways and sites within walking distance, it was very easy to come and go during the day. It was such a cozy apartment and a lovely place to come home to in the evenings. I look forward to returning! Thank you Chris!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Rue Charlot was perfect. I am still talking about it. Such a comfortable, well-designed space. A home away from home. We enjoying the location of the apartment, walking everywhere and shopping for food just up the street on Rue Bretagne. Chris, the owner, pays attention to every detail making staying in an apartment easy. Once again thanks for making our Paris stay very memorable.Did you find this review helpful? My wife and I just spent 2 weeks in this wonderful spot. It is as described: charming, quiet and convenient. We have been in Paris many times but always stayed in a hotel; never again! Comfortable bed, modern kitchen and bath, and close to everything good. Buy a copy of Pariscope at the nearby kiosk to learn about the free concerts just down the street at the Armenian cathedral (and elsewhere) Walk a couple of blocks to catch the bus or metro. Dine at Chez Nenesse, the best restaurant in the neighborhood (fish dumplings, mmm). Thanks, Chris, for your hospitality and attention to detail.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: The concerts are great, aren't they? I'm glad you two had a good time, and we look forward to having you back again.

It was our home away from home for 5 nights. It was beautiful, so comfortable and impeccaibly clean. More beautiful than the photos. My husband and 2 children (ages 11 and 13) so loved our stay in your amazing home. The neighborhood was incredible. We felt more like locals than tourists. It was so quiet and the beds so were so comfy (what an amazing sofabed!). We all loved the awesome bathroom with rain shower and soaking tub. Chris, thank you for providing everything we could possibly need. So glad we found you and we hope to return again soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: When I decided to open our place to others, I was hoping it could be a part of special celebrations in people's lives. It was heartwarming to hear that it was a special part of yours. All the best to you, Chris

Anne and I had a wonderful time in Paris and loved everything about your apartment. Everything you said about is was true, so well equipped and quiet. We particularly enjoyed it's closeness to so many wonderful cafes and shops. We bought our breakfast baguettes every morning from the bakery. Thank you for your bouquet of flowers too - such a thoughtful idea. Your instruction folder was amazing. We used it often and it was so helpful. We ate at the restaurants you recommended and enjoyed them all. I would be happy to be contacted by anyone considering renting the apartment and have already given your details to a couple of friends. We hope to return soon. We really enjoyed our stay at this delightful apartment. During our week we found our location was perfect for shopping, transit, restaurants and sightseeing. The apartment is wonderfully quiet and clean, with ingenious storage to tuck everything away. The welcome bouquet of flowers was a lovely touch and we greatly appreciated the thorough and perfectly explained directions for finding our way to our temporary "home". The "black book" was particularly helpful, offering restaurant suggestions and other useful details. We enjoyed having the completely equipped kitchen, with a local outdoor market, grocery stores, patisseries and bakeries just steps away - a branch of the famous Poilane bakery is nearby and offers mouthwatering bread and croissants. This charming studio is an excellent base from which to explore the fascinating Marais district and beautiful Paris! Also, we appreciated Chris' help before, during and after our stay - a model VRBO host. Merci beaucoup from Heidi and MauriceDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Joelle is French, and a professor of French literature. Chris is American, but has spent most of his adult life here in France. We like to make this apartment available to travelers, like ourselves, who wish to immerse themselves in the local culture and would not have it be changed to suit them. And we want to make it the way we'd like to find an apartment in another city -- beautiful, clean, with a very good bed, and outfitted with everything one might need. Voila!
Why the Owner Chose Paris Arrondissement 3:
This will be our 'pied-a-terre' when we move from Paris. It is a wonderful little island of calm in the center of the city -- and our favorite neighborhood. We love the old world stone and beams -- the way a Paris apartment should be -- and the garden outside the windows makes you feel as though you could be in the countryside.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Having the center of Paris at your doorstep! And the Marais and our neighborhood, in particular. It is like a little village in the heart of Paris. Plus, the apartment is truly quiet -- a haven of peace in the middle of the big city.
