Property description

Our rental is on a working farm and sheep ranch. You will see mostly sheep, some goats and our three Maremma guard dogs out in the pastures with the sheep. In the fields are gophers, field mice, coyotes, foxes, and other wild life. You may hear coyotes at night, roosters in the morning and sometimes tree frogs. This is their home as much as it is ours.
The owner, Benjamin 'Nick' Colby, lives on the property and, when not out on the farm, is available should questions arise. You can also message our Farm Manager, Berenice. Please leave a review after your stay and let us know how we did. See our website for more details and reviews.
Check in time is 3 PM and check out time is 11 AM. If you need accommodations to this please ask.
Farm Rules:
Guests should feel free to walk along our recycled white concrete road. As you drive or walk through any gates, please leave them as you found them (either open or closed). Please do not go into the barn or dairy area or into any of the corrals or pastures where horses, geese, and turkeys are being raised. You may see a dew wild turkeys elsewhere on the farm (as well as California Quail and ducks and geese on the pond). Do not swim in the pond without first checking in with Nick or Berenice or other farm personnel. Do not climb fences to get into other pastures because you may be climbing into the neighbor's property and they do not appreciate unannounced visitors. Also, we have very large guard dogs (Maremmas, who are with the sheep) and if you have pet dogs, they should not be allowed into areas where the sheep are being guarded. If you want to climb hills, greet the sun, pick plums or blackberries (in season), or anything else, check with Nick (or if unavailable Joe, the farm manager). Please remember that we are a working farm and sheep ranch. If you wish to see the Sonoma Ecology Center's Adam Retort for making biochar if available, Nick can give you a tour of that facility.

The house is surrounded by the countryside so bring your hiking shoes and take in the scenery. Bird watching is spectacular and in the evening you can build a fire and enjoy the evening stars. You are welcome to read books from the main house library featuring agriculture, nutrition, natural history, humor and the great books series. There is an upstairs area of more technical books in anthropology, the social and cognitive sciences, cognitive neurology, social psychology, philosophy and social criticism. As your host we are happy to provide maps, suggestions and recommendations for fine dining and other entertainment options in the area. Some animals may be okay. All we worry about is dogs chasing the chickens and other farm animals. Please check with the manager first for accommodations. Please do not smoke inside the house or the indoor patio.

Manager info

Year Purchased: 2006

About: Nick is an Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, having taught at Harvard and the University of California. His field work has been with rural farmers in Mexico, Guatemala and the American Southwest. As a boy on his family farm in Tennessee he grew hybred corn seed, picked crops, plowed and pitched hay with horses. These days he is especially interested in the production of biochar and developing farm resiliency as global warming takes its toll.

Why Sebastopol:
This property was chosen because Sonoma County appeared to be progressive and farm oriented

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The farm is located in a small valley, where, except for farm animals and occasionally coyotes at night is usually very quiet with a sense of being remote. But we are 15 minutes from Bodega Bay, 20 minutes from Sebastopol, 25 minutes from Petaluma. Closest town is Valley Ford just minutes away with a small general store including fresh vegetables, and sandwiches. There is also an excellent place for dinner and Sunday brunch at Rocker Oysterfellers. The guest space includes a sitting room. Since farms are not allowed to have bed and breakfast offerings, we instead are officially a 'farm-stay.' For larger events the farm kitchen may be available. It is in the larger building (connected through a solarium) where there is also a conference room, dining space, two story library, Japanese furo, two extra baths for farm workers or people renting the conference space, laundry and such. Heating is via a geothermal system and passive solar heating.
