Property description

The house, the yard, and the beach are the main attractions for this oceanfront home. Offering (5) bedrooms, (5) full baths, an upstairs and downstairs den, a beautiful 2nd story porch extending the full length of the house overlooking the backyard and ocean setting.

GOLF: The house is less than one mile from the Jekyll Island Golf Club, which feature (3) 18-hole golf courses known as Indian Mound, Pine Lakes, and Oleander. In addition, there is an ocean view 9-Hole golf course known as Great Dunes.

TENNIS: Also located less than a mile from the house is a Jekyll Island Tennis Center, which offers (13) clay tennis courts.

WATER PARK: Located approximately 2 miles from the house is the Summer Waves Water Park, which features a wave pool, lazy river, (9) water slides of varying thrill levels, a 'kiddie' area, all located on (11) acres. The Water Park is seasonal.

BIKE/EXPLORE: Jekyll Island offers more than 20 miles of pristine biking trails, with routes zigging through lush maritime forest, zagging through the National Landmark Historic District and winding along beachscapes. You can bring your own bike or rent bikes on a daily or weekley basis.

JEKYLL ISLAND CLUB: The Historic District of Jekyll Island is the home of the Jekyll Island Club. At one point in time, it became what Munsey’s Magazine called “the richest, most inaccessible club in the world. Club members included notable names such as J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William K. Vanderbilt, and Marshall Field, to name a few. In 1972, the Jekyll Island Club was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additional recognition was gained in 1979 when the National Park Service awarded Landmark status to former Club grounds, creating the Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District. By placing the 240-acre site and 33 historic structures into the National Historic Landmark program, the importance of Jekyll Island’s place in American History was recognized and solidified.

EAT: Some of our favorite spots to eat and drink include Latitude 31 Degrees, Vincent's Pub, and the Rah Bar; all within a mile or so of the house. If you want to get fancy, the Main Dining Room at the Jekyll Island Club is awesome (you don't have to dress up).

Manager info

Year Purchased: 1995

About: Jim and Lucy Saunders purchased this house in 1993 and named the property Woodlawn, after timberland located on family property in Eastern North Carolina. Jim and Lucy grew up in Red Oak, North Carolina. The became girlfriend/boyfriend in 10th grade. Jim graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and Lucy from UNC Greensboro. Jim and Lucy married and had (4) children, which they raised in Durham, Atlanta, and primarily Charlotte, NC, since 1975. Jim was a partner with Deloitte Touche prior to retirement. The entire family, including many grandkids and friends have enjoyed vacationing at Jekyll several times a year for years!

Why Jekyll Island:
We began visiting Jekyll Island in the early 1970's and fell in love with the natural beauty of the island. We returned every summer until 1995, when we spotted the house now known as Woodlawn. We had to have it! We have loved the house ever since, hosting family weddings, reunions, golf trips, friend trips, etc.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The house is beautiful. The setting of the backyard and the path leading through the lush seascape opens to the dunes and the wide beaches that Jekyll is known for. Morning walks and midnight walks on the beach make us feel like we are the only ones on the island. The house itself offers a first floor with 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths, a large den, dining area, kitchen, and full glass wall with French doors looking outside to the backyard. The second floor includes an additional large den, large outdoor porch overlooking the backyard and ocean. There are (2) bedrooms and (2) full baths upstairs. There is an additional 'mother in law' suite which includes a recently renovated full bath and bedroom.
