This wonderful 1850 classic Maine farmhouse was completely renovated in 1996, with a spectacular 14 x 40 waterside wing creating a four-rooms-in-one "great room". This house is wonderful, warm, and inviting 12 months a year. One expects the Maine Summer to be glorious, with warm days and cool nights. And it IS. BUT Fall is spectacular with the leaves changing and the autumn evening sun hi-lighting the New England fall foliage across the bay. The Osprey migrate in late fall and the Bald Eagles happily move into their nest on the island right in front of the house. Winter and the snow and the quiet times are spectacular in the cozy house. The outdoor hot tub is exhilarating as the snow lands on your nose. Spring happily arrives, the goldfinches return to the feeder, and the jonquils, lilacs, and tulips emerge. In other words, in our house, you can discover the "real Maine" 12 months a year.Standing at the dishwashing and counter-dining fire-slate island, you can chat with friends sitting in the family area and spot the eagle hunting from the Osprey nest on the island in the middle of Pleasant Cove. While you are preparing the next meal, you will be able to enjoy the 6 burner Viking range, double wall ovens, a self contained warming drawer, and a separate free standing ice-maker. This is truly a gourmet chef's delight kitchen!!! (In fact, cooking classes have been given in this kitchen.)Sitting before the open wood-burning classic fireplace in the living room, you can look out over the family dining table made of 200 year old polished pine planks seating 12 (16 with the "company boards") with Pleasant Cove behind the wall of windows. The golden sunrises and reflected sunsets on the far shore are not to be missed.Beyond the original 1850 "old front door" and staircase is the downstairs bedroom with private bath. Don't miss the wall of cabinets re-assembled from the original country kitchen. The floor of the bath is the original floor from the birthing room in which the seven Reed sisters were born in the early 1900s (there's a seven sisters climbing rose on the trellis by the full length water-side deck in their honor).Upstairs, the original bedroom has been restored with brass beds and Maine/European country furnishings. You look out on the granite trackbed of the original Boston to Bangor single track with its charming wood bridge, the front door to the property.Three bedrooms on the water side all have their own unique views of the Sasanoa ... you can see all the way to Georgetown Island and the sacred Indian burial grounds at Hockomock Rock. The Chocolate Room has a large walk-in closet and private bath. Linking the other bedrooms with a large shared bath with built-in laundry is a lofted hallway, playroom video room. Don't miss the peek through "elf's door" from the sleeping loft in the Peach Room ... a perfect venue for a puppet show, or just a terrific way to catch a cross breeze on a cool Maine summer's night.Of course, those summer evenings are also well-spent on the fully screened in south side porch or the hot tub on the deck. From both, it's an easy walk to the deep water dock, for a swim, canoe or kayak ride, or open woodside campfire. It's Maine! No Smoking, Please. Please be advised that there is an attached, but SEPARATE "granny flat," or "mother-in-law apartment" which is NOT included in the rental. From time to time, the owner may be staying in this attached flat, which in NO WAY affects your rental. This is a separate unit. If you would like further details, please drop us an email. The house is limited to a MAXIMUM of EIGHT guests over age 3. Yes, children count.
This is truly a "family" house. Those coming here should expect to feel comfortable and "at home" here. We leave spices and condiments for your enjoyment and just hope that you will take great pleasure in relaxing and having a good time with your friends and/or family. Welcome to Maine, "the way life should be".

Why the Owner Chose Bath
We chose to buy a family home in this location as it is within walking distance to Bath and has a view that simply does not end. We only started renting the house when our children were not able to use it. This house is too special not to share and when purchased was never intended to be a rental.
The Unique Benefits at this House
This is a special place. The dining room table seats fourteen and is the starting point for many wonderful conversations. The house is about being! Outside there are lovely gardens and a walk through the woods to a dock with great boating and swimming - when the tide is right! The city of Bath, Maine is within walking distance and you get to walk right by the Dairy Queen to get there. There are so many wonderful things to do here.

We had a wonderful time in Maine and used this house as our "home base". It was perfectly located for us to have many day trips up and down the coast. Very well equipped and spacious home that invites you to gaze at the beautiful views for hours. From the screened in porch, from the deck, from the living room, from the bedrooms...it did not matter... they all were scenes to remember. In addition, we thoroughly enjoyed watching the eagles every afternoon! Hugh and Judy made our stay a complete joy with their wonderful suggestions on things to see in the area and terrific hospitality! We felt like we were family!
Owner response:We loved having our Texas ladies; the level of their energy was truly remarkable. They have set a very high bar for what life should be like in our 80s!!!

Recently, we stayed at this beautiful waterfront home near Bath. Our gracious hosts (homeowners) told us all we needed to bring were clothes and presonal items and she was so right. You will want for nothing at Graywoods-- it's all there; hairdryer, first aid, indoor and outside games, canoe, life jackets, full kitchen, cozy beds and all the other necessities for a week of total delight. H and J wanted to share their home with us and that is exactly what they did. They treated us like dear old friends, even though we had just met for the first time. Lovely people with a lovely place. Eagles in full view off the wrap around porch; racoons in the back yard eating from the feeder....An inviting home surrounded with beautiful summer wildflowers. It can't get much better than this. Thanks for the memories H and J!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Owner response:It has been a wonderful, wonderful summer with terrific renters. Irene came and went and we had 24 hours of no power. Happily the generator worked its magic. Now we move into fall, with the leaves beginning to change into their vibrant colors. The bridge construction is well on its way and the eagles are soaring looking for the perfect fish. Thanks to all of you for adding so much to our lives. We like it when Graywoods is alive with happy voices and wonderful laughter. We will let you know the available dates for next summer when we have them and we are thrilled that you have such happy memories of family reunions with often three generations, exciting college graduations, two family vacations with wonderful little children, or a ladies' week. We hope to see y'all again and thanks for being the terrific people that you are. Hugh and Judy

Hugh and Judy have a beautiful home. We spent a week in summer of '11 with another family. House is spacious for 8, rugged for young kids, yet exceptionally comfortable for adults. Beautiful views, amazing kitchen, warm hot tub. Rent with confidence!

We were a family of eight, which included a grandmother and aunt, at Graywoods on memorial day weekend to celebrate my sons graduation from nearby Bowdoin College in Brunswick. It was a perfect place for us to prepare for all the exciting events taking place at the college and then to rest in comfort once the activities were over. Every time we returned to the house we truly felt at home. The kitchen was well equipped for our everyday needs. The upstairs living area was a great place for the kids to have their own space. The furnishings and bedding were comfortable and inviting and the views from the downstairs living area to the upstairs master bedroom were spectacular. Thanks to our gracious hosts, our memories of graduation and our stay at Graywoods will always be cherished.
Owner response:Over the years we have had many Bowdoin parents share happy times with their Bowdoin "children", Our house is about 15 minutes away from the Bowdoin campus.

June 2011 visit. Beautiful location, close to cute town of Bath, close to Brunswick too. Its even prettier than the photos and staying here is like having your own house in Maine. We walked over the big bridge into Bath every day, kayaked in Hanson Bay, enjoyed the bald eagle and baby in their nest right in front of the house, saw deer wading in the water in the early dawn, enjoyed the stars from the hot tub at night. Its close to town but you feel like its all on its own because of the expansive and private views. Lots of room, everything clean and very well equipped. The owner was very helpful with ideas for restaurants, things to do and answered questions really quickly in our planning stages and while we were there.

This is truly a house and a home where memories are made. We have been fortunate to have enjoyed the splendid views from the living and sleeping areas, the wonderfully comfortable accommodations, the fabulously equipped kitchen, the spacious dining room (where recently we enjoyed a sit-down lobster dinner for sixteen!), and the proximity to the lovely little town of Bath (a short walk). But more than that, this well-loved and beautifully cared for home beckons you to come in, relax, soak in the beauty of Maine, enjoy special times with good friends and family. When you leave, be sure to throw a penny over the bridge, making the wish that you will return soon.

My family and I stayed here hoping for a peaceful mid-October escape - and we had a terrific time in every way. The photos on the website accurately capture the home - homey, relaxed and comfortable for families with children. We especially appreciated the toys, games and well stocked kitchen and the fireplace. The views were fantastic with windows spanning one side of the whole first floor with a deck and hot tub, and a bay window in the master bedroom with a beautiful view of the water. The owners were welcoming, friendly, informative and easy-going. We spent one day at Reid State Park (~ 20 minutes away) and another day at Pemaquid Point (lighthouse; ~ 1 hour away) - both just gorgeous. Great location - would love to come back and explore more! Highly recommend to family and friends.

What a wonderful time our family had at Graywoods. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed our time swimming off the dock and taking the kayaks and canoe out. We also had a great time shopping in Freeport but had even more fun shopping in Bath. Reny's and Now You're Cooking are not to be missed. We cannot wait to come back to Graywoods and next time we may have time to hike and even go to Boothbay. It was a great vacation..
