Cedar Island house description

VERY Pet Friendly.. had 2 Iguanas stay with us!!! We don't care how big your pooches are. Beautifully decorated suite with all the amenities. Peaceful quiet and privacy. Huge pool! Hot tub!!! Outstanding view of the bay from the deck. See our own website for more info and pictures (link is provided later in this listing).

No one else has a pool or spa and sandy beach access! We also have free WiFi!

Can't get closer to the water than this! Bring your boat and tie it feet from your Suite.

Swim in front of the property in beautiful Core Sound! Very safe for the youngsters...they love exploring the marine life. Your dogs will love the swim too!. Swim in our Huge pool...er, we'd rather the dogs did not :-). (The pool will close for the season sometime in September)

Spa (Hot Tub!)

Free WiFi to DSL if you must stay in touch. HD TV with Netflix streaming. BluRay player. Wii console.

We will continue last year's experiment of only requiring a 3 night minimum since folks are having trouble or afraid to take off from work for a week. This also alleviates the mandatory changeover day. We were almost fully occupied in 2012-13, even in the bad economy, so that tells us that you like this plan.

We're very pleased that our first 7 years were so well booked. We've met so many nice people and their dogs loved it here too. Many brought their pets who had a ball playing with our pooches and relaxing in the suite after a 'hard' day in the water and walks on the beach. Did we mention that we LOVE dogs? Did we mention that you can bring your dogs? Please do not board your best friend...bring him/her here for fun too.

Guests that were here brought their small sail boat (like a Sun Fish) and Wind Surfer boards...they have had a ball. The lady has 'complained' that she has found so much to do that she hasn't rested enough. They dined on crabs, clams, and fish that THEY caught right in the back yard. Several guests brought their boats and had a great time out on the water.

Our family and dog friendly SUITE offers beautiful furniture and accessories. Look at the pictures on our web site. It is a private, two-bedroom suite with everything to make your holiday comfortable. You'll wake up in a 4-poster bed and look directly at Cedar Island Bay and watch the pelicans, gulls and other fowl go about their morning feeding. The suite can accommodate 4 adults or 2 adults and several children, depending on ages.

Have your coffee outside on the huge private deck to continue this morning show and you'll probably find it tough to get moving. You are steps away from the water. During the day, swim or clam in the bay. You might kayak, bike, horseback ride or just read the rest of the day. At night enjoy a campfire and look at stars and planets in an unpolluted sky. Check our website and picture site (listed below) for more information.

We have broadband (DSL) internet access and we offer free WiFi!

You do not need to bring much because we provide everything but food (and we even include some staples and spices!)

Pelicans Rest is located on Cedar Island, a 'Down East' fishing village in North Carolina known as the Gateway to the Outer Banks. It is a nature lover's paradise overlooking Cedar Island Bay, Core Sound, and Pamlico Sound. The Atlantic Ocean and its beaches are visible on the horizon and accessible by ferry.

Did we mention that we are VERY pet friendly! No need to board Fido.

For a complete description and pictures, please visit our website.

CAUTION: many teenagers will hate this place. We are a mellow out and enjoy nature and family place. Type A 'gotta do something' folks will not like us. We warned you. What's the fishing situation? Google is your friend. It changes from day to day.

Privacy: the unit is attached to our house. We are geezers and stay to ourselves in the far opposite end. We use the pool rarely and then only when guests are gone. We know you are here as a family, not to see us. We are available if you need us...some times...but otherwise, you are own your own. We RV a lot so we may not be here anyway.

Pelican's Rest was everything advertised and much more. It has to be the quietest place on earth and is very comfortable. Water is great, pool is great, hot tub is great, kitchen is remarkable, bed is devine, internet is good, satellite tv has all you could want and on top of it all, Steve is a great guy! If you want night life and fine dining, stay away, if you want peace and quiet in a beautiful area, sign up and check it out. You'll be glad you did.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week on Cedar Island! Steve was a gracious host and the home is exactly as described....quiet, peaceful and relaxing. I spent many hours sitting outside on the deck or by the water reading and bird watching. We also enjoyed our trip to Ocracoke Island and dinner at Harker's Island. The accommodations were a home away from home! Our thoughts and blessings to Steve and his family....

I and my best friend of 35 years chose to celebrate a very special birthday at Pelican's Rest.We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, though we wish it could have been longer! Steve Johnson is a fantastic host, and made sure we had everything we needed, including loaning us garlic powder. The property is lovely and the accommodations are exactly as described in the listing. We highly recommend Pelican's Rest for a peaceful place to rejuvenate.

My wife and I have 2 Samoyeds (50 pound, fluffy dogs). So the first filter in a vacation rental search is always the 'pet friendly' option. We were looking for somewhere to drive over Easter weekend, get way from the city, and hopefully be on a beach. When we stumbled across Pelican's Rest, it was as if Steve had written the ad TO US. In our email exchanges, I told him it seemed too good to be true (on the beach, dogs more than welcome, no extra fees of any kind). Turns out it was as advertised. We got in at about 4am on Saturday after a long drive. Light was on, and it was the only one in the area so that helped us find the front door. And just to be sure, Steve had left a note on the front door welcoming us. I was up early enough in the morning to step out onto the deck and see the sun rise over the water... and we got 3 days doing exactly what we'd hoped: not much. Steve let us build a little campfire in the front year near the water (and it sounds like he might actually be getting a legit fire pit soon since folks apparently are fond of doing the front yard fire thing), we made bloody marys, strolled to the local store for supplies, drove about 5 min. to the nearby beach and had it pretty much to ourselves (i.e. dogs off leashes, thank you very much!) and did the beach both days actually. My wife was pleased. I was happy. The dogs were content. I'm hoping we'll have the time to scoot back down next Easter and see the new fire pit. Maybe we'll even get around to using the jacuzzi, pool and/or canoe next time...

at least for me. My time at Pelicans Rest was perfect! My whippets and me spent time quietly - I read on the deck, got hot, went in the pool, and repeat! The pups chased geckos, butterflies, and laid in the sun. My cell phone didn't work and that is just what I needed. Steve and Daniele were just wonderful, there if i needed them and wonderful kind people. Pelican's Rest is my kind of Paradise. We will be back!! Terry and the 4 whippets.

Re cell phone service: if yours does not work here and you need phones, we'll loan you one of our land line phones. Our Verison works well but the phone itself is also a factor. WiFi is very reliable.

Steve and Danielle are excellent hosts.... just the right kind of hospitality here. The seafood that you got yourself was delicious.... there were fresh prawns, clams, crabs etc available easily. The pool and hot tub were amazing. It was quiet and peaceful, nature at its best. Beautiful sunrises on the horizon greeted us every morning. T

This is the ideal place to stay if visiting cedar island or staying over for a ferry trip. All the amenities of a 5 star hotel but with the quaint bed and breakfast feel. The property was amazing. Its great to take the canoe or kayak out to explore the great water view out in front or just relax by the pool and hot tub. Its a short drive away from the Ocracoke ferry and close enough to ferry services to see Cape Lookout and other core bank islands. The house was amazing! You can see the water from the master bedroom and the living area. The house was well updated with technology from this century, unlike crummy hotel chains. It was a great home away from home. The owners are available if you have questions but quietly tucked away if you don't. The mosquitoes are not bad unless it rains but they are kept under control by the owner and the county spraying the property. Didn't see a single mosquito until our last day after a full night of rain. If you are looking for a relaxing and quiet place to stay this it!

My husband, children (ages 7, 8, and 10), and our 100 lb. German shepherd (Steve & Danielle are REALLY pet friendly) just returned from a 7 day stay at Pelican's Rest. We tend to spend our vacations on the go, but this was the first time that we found more enjoyment by staying put. Our kids loved the pool (it's huge!) and searching in the sound for hermit crabs and clams (they were so preoccupied they never once played on the Wii that was provided in their room). The view is amazing! You can watch the sunrise over the water from the bedroom. The suite is beautiful and spacious. Steve and Danielle have gone above and beyond to ensure that their guests have a wonderful experience. Don't miss out on an opportunity to ask for their opinions on local cuisine or places to go (using Steve's advice my husband was able to discover some of the best pork BBQ at Roland's in Beaufort). They were always available and easy to access by phone, email, or in person. They also worked to make sure that they didn't intrude, and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Just remember to bring some bug spray for the mosquitoes. There are more out after it rains, but whatever spray that Steve used on the property greatly reduced them. I hate bugs, and so do the kids, but the mosquitoes weren’t so bad as to deter us from spending time outside. We couldn’t have asked for a more family friendly, secluded, or relaxing location. We would highly recommend this as a fantastic place to vacation. We definitely plan to return in the future.

If you are in search of a quiet and relaxing vacation, I would highly recommend Pelican's Rest. The view is stunning, the birdlife is incredible, the hosts could not be more accommodating. Buying fish right off the boats was amazing. The pool and hot tub was a nice amenity. We will be recommending to our friends and intend to return.

We were so at peace for our 4 days there. Great getaway from the city life. Much needed peace and rest. The kitchen is well equipped and we found the space quite adequate. The big bed is very comfortable and nice. The decor is very well done and lovely. We did not want to leave and I know the dogs did not either. Wish we could have used the hot tub but the pool felt great on a hot afternoon. My only complaint (which is my own fault) would be not taking bug spray for the mosquitos. That was my fault, not the owner's. Come and see for yourself!

The Island's people and the serene nature. It is so quiet here. We love looking at the water.
