Friday Harbor house description

San Juan Waterhouse

Located on the sunny west side of San Juan Island, with stunning whale watching opportunities, this private, waterfront home offers superb vacation lodging.

Built uniquely close to the shoreline, the Waterhouse is a very secluded island home whose beautiful southwestern views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan De Fuca are breathtaking in all seasons. Situated on three acres with 1400 feet of rugged, pristine coastline, the home provides much sought after 'old island' privacy. Enjoy a front row view of the resident Orca whales, which hunt migrating salmon directly offshore and often sleep in the cove.

Custom built with much attention to creative details, enjoy a beautiful stone fireplace (gas flame just recently installed) when ambiance and warmth are the inspiration. The fully equipped kitchen includes a professional Viking stove, a great invitation to the serious chef. A stainless propane BBQ on the deck makes outdoor cooking a breeze.

Multiple French doors, a vaulted ceiling and an open living space floor plan surrounded by windows provide customized comfort, and spectacular water views from all rooms.

There is plenty to do with the rocky coves and a private gravel beach to explore. Tide pooling is excellent. Bring your binoculars because bird watching is superb, with resident Harlequin ducks and the local Bald Eagle 'Rocky'. Watch fox, otter, and deer close by, or pack your favorite beverages, a great book and relax on a sandy haven directly in front of the house. Two well furnished decks with outdoor seating, a picnic table and adirondack chairs also beckon. Small beach fires are allowed if a fire ban is not enforced on the island. Best of all is whale watching as this stretch of shoreline has been identified by a Whale Museum biologist as a feeding area for Orcas. Watch whales pass by from the deck as their family groups come within a few yards of shore, hunting salmon.

My husband and I and our 2 tween aged boys stayed here for 5 nights this October. Upon walking up to the house on our first day there, I took one look at the deck and the amazing view and told my husband that he may have to forcibly drag me out of there at the end of our stay. Just sitting in the house or outside on the deck or at the fire pit, we saw bald eagles, seals, foxes, racoons, deer and some silly otters playing in the bay. Oh and giant purple starfish and jelly fish in the water. Every night, my 2 boys went out and scrambled around on the rocks checking out the water for animals. The house itself was very comfortable. There are some wonderful window seats for staring out the window and really the entire house is set up to take advantage of the view. Even from the master bathroom shower, you can stare out at the ocean with no concerns about privacy. The kitchen was well equipped and really the house had everything we needed and we had an amazing stay. The owner was also very gracious and called our first day there to kind of walk me through the ins and outs of the house and then gave me some excellent suggestions on activities that my two boys might enjoy. The house is also in a great location. Friday Harbor, where one would find all the restaurants and grocery shopping, is just a short drive away. We had such a wonderful time and I really will be surprised if we don't go back and stay at this house again sometime in the near future.

Neither pictures or elaborate descriptions can begin to convey the gem that is the San Juan Waterhouse. As we made our way down the hillside, winding down a small country road, we could already see the spectacular views. We wondered as we made our way closer and closer to the water "where is this house? It MUST be just ahead." We parked and walked the short path to the house, all of us literally gasping at what lay ahead. Way beyond our expectations. The views were absolutely amazing. The decks, the comfortable chairs and the beautiful setting drew us in immediately. We promptly retrieved a bottle of wine and snacks from the car, pulled up the chairs and took it all in. The conversation was filled with amazement and delight at what we had just arrived to. Everything about this house welcomes you to stay: a great room and a convenient kitchen with all necessary amenities (an outdoor grill is also available), a large dining table, three private bedrooms and 2 large (modern and beautiful!) bathrooms. There is ample, comfortable seating indoors as well. If you must be indoors, it is lovely how you can still feel a part of the outdoors, as the windows orient OUT to the amazing view. We saw an abundance of wildlife--deer, eagles, otters, fox and various birds--but never spotted a whale. Just bad luck; we heard there were several sightings just up and down the beach, and the guest book indicated there were several in view in the days just before our arrival. We immensely enjoyed the vistas despite not seeing a whale! Wandering the shoreline, climbing on the rocks and exploring the sea creatures left behind in tide pools was another favorite activity--just steps away from the deck. I simply can't say enough about the quality of our stay at this beautiful beach home. Everything we needed was available, from kitchen supplies to bedroom and bath. Clean, tidy, homey and comfortable. The owner left us alone, but was very courteous, helpful and easy to contact if necessary. She went way out of her way, shipping to us items we had left behind. We would highly recommend this house for an island getaway. Our only complaint is that we had to leave! We had only two nights, and it was horrible to pack up and drive away. We will most definitely return, and next time will be for a more extended stay. Thank you, thank you Ken and Suzanne.

We stayed there for three days in early May during a hot period. The views are fantastic. Sitting on the deck in the very comfortable chairs was great. We saw numerous eagles, seals and otters. The town of Friday Harbour was very nice with a lot of very nice places to eat. The owners were very nice and helpfull.

We recently returned from a wonderful week at this house on the south western edge of San Juan Island. The building is uniquely sensitive to the very dramatic view with the two main bedrooms and family areas oriented toward the Olympic mountain range, right on the water. In addition to spectacular views from the interior, the exterior has two well appointed decks with outdoor seating, a picnic table and Adirondack chars perfectly placed to appreciate the view. Each evening, we sat with a glass of wine and cheese and watched our children playing on the rocks, a bald eagle flying overhead and sea otters, splashing in the water below. The house has a Viking stove, which was a joy to cook on, a gas fireplace to warm up a cold evening and a very restful quiet character. For people who need a television, there is a large one, but we were captivated by the scenery. As an architect, I really loved how the house responds to the views, turning its back to the neighbors. You really feel at the edge of the world. We hope to come back next year.

My husband and I took his parents up to San Juan island while they were visiting us for the Thanksgiving holiday last year. This house was the perfect The pictures are great but the property is much more impressive in person. A small windstorm blew through while we were there and we sat for hours watching the waves crash against the rocks outside while sipping coffee by the fire. Very cozy with updated bathrooms and kitchen. We would highly recommend this place.
