Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 8)
Elegant and sweet: this healthy house is free of mold and actively toxic building materials. It has tile and hardwood floors, antiques, decks, an "airtight" Dutch West" wood stove, natural fabric linens, an air filtration system, distilled water delivery, and fragrance-free soaps and body care products provided.
Little Nelson, (population 10,000) a "miniature Manhattan" in the Kootenay mountains of south central British Columbia, offers spectacular scenery along with rich alternative healing resources (organic food, yoga, acupuncture, massage, murcury-free dentistry, etc). It also offers amazing music, dance, theater, cinema, cafes, galleries, shopping, garden tours, restaurants, every kind of civic group imaginable, and activities for children.
This friendly, rural town, with its heartwarming historic charm and world-class quality of life, borders the huge Kootenay Lake and is surrounded by glacier-topped peaks. Outdoor sport opportunities abound. Champion snowboarders and mountain-bikers live here. In winter there are awesome hot springs, cross-country ski trails, and hard-core powder skiing at two nearby resorts - Whitewater and Red Mountain. In summer there is boating, swimming, fishing, river rafting, kayaking, spelunking, rock climbing, and back-country trips of many kinds, along with specialists to help you with access.
A favorite local road trip loop (four hours) takes you up the scenic Slocan River Valley; past the majestic Vallhalla Range; up to tiny New Denver with its sweet Apple Tree Sandwich Shop; and on to the ghost mining town, Sandon, from which you may venture a challenging ascent by car and foot to Idaho Peak, the highest point in the area offering breathtaking alpine wildflower meadows in late summer and 360-degree views. From there the drive takes you into Kaslo looking out over the lake towards an immensity of towering peaks; past Ainsworth hot springs; and back down the "north shore" to Balfour, ferry landing for the longest free ferry in North America, taking you to Crawford Bay, home of many local artisans, as well as the Yasodhara Yoga Ashram, where you may share a locally-grown organic, vegetarian meal in silence (call first); and then down across "BOB" (the Big Orange Bridge) back to Nelson.
