The base of the local hill is literally a 7 minute walk, or 1 minute drive from our house. While small, the hill is almost never crowded and powder hounds can skip the Squallywood scene for fresh tracks all day on the backside runs.
The XC trails are truly world class. 'Advanced beginners' and up simply must do the Euer Vally loop. While the climb out is a bit of a slog, the valley is absolutely stunning, and the loops in the valley floor are completely flat. Bring a nice lunch and enjoy the mellow scene at the Cookhouse, or relax in scenic isolation at the Coyote Hut.
More adventurous skiers and boarders can get their backcountry fix just up the road. Walk or drive up Skislope to the top, hike/ski/snowshoe the trails to skiers left and ride Sunrise Bowl back down to the street.
In summer Euer Valley remains one of our favorite places to hike or mountain bike to. If you time a springtime (early june) hike just right, Sagehen Creek trail (hikers only) takes you to an arm of Stampede reservoir and a literal ocean of purple flowers.
An interesting 6 mile up and back mountain bike ride can be had along Alder creek. Start by parking along Alder Creek road (south side) where the Emigrant Trail crosses the road and ride up the trail beside the creek. The creek is pretty, beaver dams and ponds abound, and there is even a few skinny bridges back and forth across the creek to test your nerve. Extend the ride up into the Tahoe Donner trail complex, or head the other way for a dramatic 20 mile round trip all the way to the Stampede reservoir boat launch (this latter ride is one of the first rides to clear in the spring, but it gets pretty hot in mid summer unless you go early or late.
And any time of the year the views of the sky from the upper deck are wonderful Alpenglow on Mount Rose, the scent of the Jeffery Pines, the whispering of Alder Creek in the back yard, and the vast clear night skies (full moons are like daylight up here, and when the moon isn't out the glittering arc of the Milky Way is something you have to see to believe.
Year Purchased: 2009
About: We live and work in Silicon Valley. We really enjoy the activities that Lake Tahoe has to offer: hiking, biking, skiing (her), snowboarding (him), and just enjoying the incredible scenery and fresh air. After years of visiting ski resorts in Tahoe and Bear Valley, we decided North Lake Tahoe offers the most options for skiing and summer outdoor activities. We were tired of renting hotel rooms, having to vacate our room by 11 in the morning, and being restricted to microwave snacks! Since acquiring our place in Tahoe Donner, we have taken up kayaking, and cross country skating; we find them exhilarating (and at times, exhausting) sports.
Why Tahoe Donner: At some point we decided that life was just too short to keep procrastinating. We spent the summer of 2009 hunting for a place that really 'spoke' to us. We had early on decided that Tahoe Donner was the place for us: the convenient location (easy to get to I-80 but far enough away to be quiet and private) and the vast array of amenities. We looked at a zillion houses but none 'clicked' until Matt showed us this house. The spectacular views, location, kitchen, decks, quality and elegance of construction, the level driveway (a deal maker!), and the soothing sound of Alder Creek. We were hooked.
The Unique Benefits at this House: What's unique about our house is not any one thing. It's a hard-to-pin-down combination of convenient location combined with beauty and privacy of location. The views are endlessly amazing. Even the condos across the creek look like Santa's Village after a snowstorm. We're close to the local ski hill, and so close to TD's vast network of XC/hike/bike trails... that we don't even need to drive to enjoy our Tahoe adventures and solitude. We really enjoy the Tahoe Donner amenities - the beach club marina at Donner Lake, the Lodge restaurant, and the European feel of the community.
