Homer has many attractions to entertain visitors with varying interests. Although there is more going on in the summer, winter provides good opportunities also. Our new modern library aimed at Grewink glacier is a welcome place to explore or sit around the fireplace with a good book. The Oceans and Islands Visitor Center offers exhibits and live bird viewing cams with trails leading down to the slough and Bishops Beach. The Pratt museum has outdoor and indoor exhibits that showcase local history. There is a fantastic network of cross country ski trails and a rope tow for downhill skiing and tube sledding at Olson Mountain. Trolling for Winter Kings has become increasingly popular.
In the summer Pier One theater on the spit offers local theater. The annual shorebird Festival occurs every spring and the Wooden Boat Festival happens in the fall.
Across the bay is the 400,000 acre Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park which is accessible by boat taxi for those who enjoy hiking among mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers. Seldovia and the artist community of Halibut Cove are also easily accessible by boat, ferry, or plane.
Although the Homer Harbor is primarily home to a local fishing fleet there are also many excellent charter operations for bird and sea creature viewing as well as Halibut and Salmon fishing.
About the owner: I first came to Alaska in 1976, In 1977 I began a journey around the world that lasted four and half years. In 1982 I settled back into Alaska in earnest. I built a cabin across Kachemak Bay, then began building our home on the Homer Bluff in 1995. Everything on our property is custom built, including your lodging. The timber frame portion of our house is made from beetle-killed spruce off this land. I have worked in mineral exploration, carpentry, fishing, as a teacher, and presently as an RN in our local hospital in the Emergency Department. I met my wife, Robbie, the green thumb of the family, in our hospital in 1989. Our daughter, Hailey is in her first year of college.
We love to travel and meet people from different places and cultures which is the primary inspiration for having a vacation rental. I think we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and it is good energy and a great pleasure to share this with others.
Why the Owner Chose Homer: We are fortunate to live in an area of such sublime natural beauty. To see each day's unique texture and color of the sea or a simple walk to sit near the bluff fills the senses and affirms how grand it is to be alive.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment: Gardens and trails to explore on the property. A peaceful, uncrowded setting.
