The Yungay Neighborhood was borne in 1839 with its main square or plaza being the nucleus of the first satellite development outside of Colonial Santiago’s “Founding Triangle.”
Our neighborhood quickly became home to many of the foreign immigrants and national intellects that played a key role in developing Chile as a newly created republic. Development peaked in the 1920s with the Yungay Neighborhood’s “Passages” sector. By the 1930s, abandonment and decay started and continued until the mid-1990s.
Our pioneering renovation of Casona Valdés began in 1995, playing a key role in the Yungay Neighborhood’s recovery process. Since then, our passages sector has organically grown into a trendsetting epicenter of architecture, culture and diversity.
In 2009, we received a grant and partnered with leading Chilean and International Universities that coincided with formalizing amazing tours to experience our neighborhoods’ architecture, culture and history. Creating the Yungay Neighborhood Cultural Corporation then followed in 2010 to continue fostering our neighborhood’s refreshingly authentic and unique sense of community.

About the owner: Casona Valdés and our progress with the Yungay Neighborhood are the culmination of more than 20 years of Chilean-foreigner affinities, collaboration and commitment.
It actually started over 40 years ago with Marcelo spending most of his youth in the neighborhood, some 20 years before traveling and spending time with family in Chicago. Marcelo enjoyed his time in the “Windy City,” especially exploring Oak Park and Chicago’s Bucktown and Wicker Park neighborhoods native to Jim and his family.
A couple of years later, Jim’s international career in Management Consulting started to focus more on South America. In 1993, he was sent to Santiago to work regionally with Ernst & Young. Upon Jim’s arrival, Marcelo assisted Jim in performing rigorous property searches for both personal use and investment.
Encountering the Yungay Neighborhood in a shameful state of deterioration, we knew something needed to be done. By 1995 we embarked with the pioneering restoration of Casona Valdés.
Our activities served as a catalyst in helping setting new standards for heritage restoration, entrepreneurial and social endeavors. This also resulted in fostering a new lifestyle experience with a refreshing authentic and unique “sense of community.” As a result, Casona Valdés immediately become a magnet for a select few of Chile’s emerging creative class trendsetters, in addition to many foreigners.
The lifelong friendships that we have created transcend beyond personalized service to help guests make the most of their time in Santiago, travels throughout Chile and the region. We have also provided assistance to many wanting to transform their experience from visiting into living, working and/or investing in Chile.
