Solana Boutique Bed and Breakfast is a new property perched above Zihuatanejo Bay with stunning views of the town, the Pacific Ocean, all of the local beaches and the surrounding Sierra Madre hills. We built our dream B&B to be a quiet retreat for everyone who visits with a contemporary clean design, luxury touches such as fine linens, beautiful Mexican art, custom furniture and a seamless connection between guest rooms and the lush tropical outdoors.
Concern for the environment led us to include many eco-friendly features including grey water recycling to irrigate our gardens, constructing on less than a third of our land to preserve our local trees, flora & fauna, incorporating drought resistant plants and utilizing a salt water swimming pool. Our menu incorporates the various fruits, herbs and spices grown on our property.
As a bed & breakfast, we aim to meet the B&B tradition of personal and friendly service and to provide our guests with a welcoming 'home away from home.' This begins, of course, around the breakfast table where we serve traditional Mexican dishes with our own gourmet and international touches, featuring local produce and the bounty from our property's garden.
We also host a sunset happy hour in our palapa-covered communal space -- the perfect spot for watching the sun dip below the ocean's horizon before heading down into town for dinner at one of the many delicious dinner options available on the beaches below or in downtown Zihuatanejo.
We have an infinity pool with spectacular views and easy access to our honor bar and lounge area. The entire property at Solana has wifi internet access but you might just forget to check in after a day or two of hammock-naps, sunset happy hours and massages on the beach.
We offer guests the option of 2 upper-level Grand Suites, 4 bay-view Junior Suites or 1 garden view room. All of our rooms were named after local trees, many of which are located on our property and happily co-exist with our fruit trees, herb garden and the menagerie of local wildlife, birds and butterflies that fill our days with musical sounds and beautiful photo opportunities.
Azulillo and Cocos are our Grand Suites, each equipped with a king-sized bed as well as a daybed-style sofa to accommodate up to 3 guests. Each suite has a large private terrace with lounge chairs and hammock and a panoramic view of our gorgeous bay. The private bathroom has a spacious outdoor shower area surrounded by beautiful native plants for added privacy. Ceiling fans provide a blissful breeze thanks to the vaulted ceilings and open plan design but there is also air conditioning for your personal comfort. Additional amenities include ample closet space, a desk area and a personal safe.
Our four bay-view Junior Suites are named Ceiba, Ciruelo, Pinzán and Panicua. Each room has a queen-sized bed and can accommodate 2 guests. Nestled between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Zihuatanejo is on a beautiful stretch of Mexican coastline called “La Costa Grande” — “The Great Coast” — which runs from Acapulco up to the Michoacan state border. The surrounding mountains and the gorgeous protected Zihuatanejo Bay foster a sense of idyllic seclusion as this picturesque fishing village welcomes tourists from all over the world.
As Zihuatanejo has grown, an interesting symbiosis between modern convenience and cultural traditions has emerged. We have grocery stores, coffee shops, fine gourmet dining and broadband internet access but we also still have a central open-air market, wandering roosters, door-to-door vendors of freshly baked goods and Sunday gatherings in the town square for “family night” events, political speeches, markets, street food and cultural performances.
Just 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) away, Ixtapa is a counter-balance to Zihuatanejo’s quaint fishing village roots with luxury hotels, golf courses and late night clubs. Between the two twin cities, vacationers get the best of both worlds in terms of luxury, culture, beaches, shopping, cuisine, recreational activities and more.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is the site of several major sporting events including a international competition-level triathlon, several global surfing competitions & exhibitions, golfing benefits and an annual sailfish tournament. We are also home to the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival which brings together guitarists from all over the world the first week of March.
We have four beaches in Zihuatanejo. Solana overlooks Playa las Gatas, an idyllic stretch of soft sand that is accessed via a rocky path or by panga boats from the town pier. There are a handful of seafood restaurants that serve the freshest fish and other vibrant Mexican flavors. Pull up a hammock and enjoy your escape… or wander into the beautiful clear water that leads out to a natural coral reef that has grown over time and is a perfect spot for leisurely snorkeling.
Heading towards town, you’ll encounter Playa la Ropa, a popular “swimmers’ beach” for both locals and tourists. Playa la Ropa is dotted with beachfront restaurants and hotels, all where you can grab a table and lounge chair for the day to sip drinks, eat snacks and enjoy the view. If you can pull yourself out of your lounge chair, you can also rent jet skis, take rides on the banana boat or go parasailing.
Closer to town is Playa Madera with more swimming action and restaurants and Playa Principal which is in front of the town square – “La Cancha” (the basketball courts) and is where local fisherman anchor their boats and unload their catch of the day.
Beyond Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, there are several small beachside communities including Troncones & Saladita to the north and Barra de Potosi to the south. Troncones is a recommended day trip for guests with several beach restaurants and water activities. Fifteen minutes further, Saladita is a popular surf spot. Barra de Potosi is home to a wildlife refuge, a lagoon and many hammocks perfect for lounging and rocking away the day.
The Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area is serviced by an international airport (ZIH) that receives flights from the US, Canada and Mexico City daily. We are located just a 20-minute cab ride from the airport. Once here you can take a 15 minute hike down to Las Gatas Beach or a longer walk to La Ropa Beach. Once at La Ropa you can ride the bus into Zihuatanejo. Taxis are inexpensive and readily available running from Solana to the beaches and the center of town.
Year Purchased: 2013
About the owner: My husband and I are avid world travelers and as we journeyed, we fell in love with Zihuatanejo. In fact, we loved it so much, we got married here! We had a dream of leaving the city and our breakneck speed jobs and opening a bed and breakfast. It only seemed natural to move to the place that inspired a sense of renewal and retreat in us so that we could share it with our guests. We have a wonderful group of friends that we've developed over the last few years of building Solana (we just opened January 1, 2014!). We spend a lot of time just relaxing and laughing with them - sharing dinner at one of our favorite restaurants on the beach, meeting for coffee in town and watching the fishermen bring in their catch, taking a drive out to the archeological ruins outside of town or going kayaking on the bay. We love to garden and have been learning all we can about local fauna as well as experimenting with growing our favorite vegetables, fruits and herbs on the property. We will be excited to share our knowledge and our garden's bounty with you at the breakfast table each morning!
Why the Owner Chose Zihuatanejo:
The view from our property is unmatched - we have a panoramic view of Zihuatanejo Bay and beyond. We were able to design and build our dream home, taking care to integrate it with the surrounding wildlife and amazing natural forest. Even though this is now our 'job', living and working at Solana really does feel like we are escaping the world every single day.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Our location high on the hill provides blissful breezes all day long. As a new build, everything is fresh and clean and uniquely ours. We incorporated many environmentally friendly features into our project including grey water recycling to irrigate our gardens, building on less than a third of our land allowing for ample garden space, preserving our local trees, flora and fauna and utilizing a salt water pool. We can't wait to share stories with you about each of the trips we took to find new treasures to decorate Solana. We designed our custom Mexican linens at a family-run textile factory in Patzcuaro, our bamboo furniture from a local artisan and even our lamps have a story!
