Imagine living in a cozy, comfortable studio apartment in the heart of vibrant downtown Los Angeles. Located in an elegantly restored 1911 building conveniently situated in the heart of the Downtown Renaissance, this fully equipped loft overlooks a gated park and is steps away from dozens of restaurants, bars, coffee-houses, wine bars and shops, the 16-square-block Jewelry District, and galleries.
The Apartment The apartment is set back from Spring Street by the width of the gated park, so you’re protected from some of the street noise. Light pours in through the wall of 10’-tall windows. The unit, with the original brick wall, is fully furnished with a comfortable queen bed, sofa, leather club chair, kitchen-dining table, and flat-screen TV. All kitchen equipment is provided – full stove with oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee-grinder, coffee-maker, pots and pans, wine rack, and cooking and dining gear. The large bathroom houses an extra-deep bathtub and a stacked washer and dryer set. WiFi and Satellite TV are available. It’s the ideal size for one or two people.
Please note that, due to our Homeowner Association rules, we can't rent our property for less than a month. If you want to stay for less than that, you may, but you'll have to pay for the full month. So we're the ideal place for you if you want to visit Los Angeles, explore the other beauties of California, and return to Los Angeles.
The Building This beautiful building has been faithfully restored to its original elegance, with brass, dark wood, brick, and marble. Amenities include full security, fobbed entries, elegant lobby, freight elevator, on-site manager, dry-cleaning service available, two spas, a lush garden, and BBQ and picnic facilities. Free bike storage is located in the basement; bring your own cable. There’s a spacious lounge with a kitchen and large flat-screen TV. The one-acre park is accessible from the street and is locked at sunset. There is an impressive wine and beer shop in the ground floor, open until 2:00 am daily (with free delivery!) Parking is available across the alley behind the building, or in any of the many lots and garages within a few blocks.
The Neighborhood The building is located at 5th and Spring St. (which has a dedicated bike lane running its length.) Directly across the street is one of the finest used bookstores in Southern California. Within three or four blocks in any direction are restaurants, bars, cafes, and galleries. Spring St. is in a transitional zone, with a fascinating mix of hip new businesses and street people. One block away is Broadway, with its colorful ethnic shops and the famed Grand Central Market. The 16-square-block Jewelry District is a block away. Just about everything is walkable.
The Downtown Area This is a constantly changing neighborhood, so trendy new restaurants and shops open every week. (The Downtown News, available in the lobby, will keep you updated on happenings in DTLA.) A short walk south will bring you to the Staples Center, Convention Center, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, and the LA Live/Nokia entertainment complex. A short walk in the opposite direction brings you to the Music Center with its concert hall and theaters; Coburn School of Music; the Disney Hall concert venue; the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels; the Museum of Contemporary Art; county, state, and federal buildings; Little Tokyo; and Chinatown. In between are a myriad of restaurants, bars, galleries, and shops. Two Metro subway stations are within three blocks. The beautiful Art Deco Union Station is a mile away. The financial heart of Los Angeles is four blocks to the west, as are two shopping malls. The University of Southern California and the California Science Center museums are a 10-minute drive away, and freeway access to everywhere is a 4-block drive. This is the ideal place to stay in downtown Los Angeles!
The Fine Print This loft is available for short-term rental for a MINIMUM OF ONE MONTH. Longer stays are welcome. Regrettably, shorter rentals cannot be accepted. Extra weeks of less than an additional month will be pro-rated. Also, please note that the apartment is quite small: 400 sq. feet/40 sq. meters. So we can't accommodate more than two people.
Please note that we don't permit the unit to be used for business purposes. We expect our visitors to use it for residential purposes only.
We love our pets, but we don't allow them in the loft.
Rental rates are subject to change until your reservation is fully paid.
We require full payment for rentals of up to three months. For longer-term rentals, you may pay the first three months in advance, and for subsequent extensions, one month in advance. Payment is due at booking for the initial 3-month period, and one month before extended rental periods.
You are eligible to a refund minus $300 if you cancel up to one month prior to your scheduled arrival. Cancellations after that will not be refunded.
We require that our renters be at least 24 years old.

About the owner: We retired from L.A. to a small town in the Sierras, but our children and grandchildren live in Los Angeles. So we use this studio apartment when we visit, four or five times a year. Margaret worked in public service for 35 years. Mike was a documentary film-maker, with 5 Emmy Awards on the mantel, before going into academia. He retired as Dean of a local college.
