Welcome to Elk Ridge, our home in the mountains! Our seven and a half acres is part of a large forested tract between Buena Vista and Salida. Our open living room- dining room- kitchen area is framed with picture windows looking over a small valley with 14 thousand ft peaks to the west, and mountains in all directions as a background. Watch elk and deer graze while you eat breakfast, sometimes the animals will be right outside the window! The log furniture and mountain decor give it that 'cabin in the woods' feel, but at 3000 sq feet with in floor heat, its way more comfortable (and much bigger) than a cabin. There is even more usable space in that we have converted our heated three car garage into a game room with ping pong, foosball, darts, and seating for spectators...
In the four bedrooms we have two king and two queen beds so the house works well with four couples. Add in the bunk beds (in a bedroom with one of the queen beds), two full size futons (one in the map room and one in the living room), and a portable crib (stored in the master closet), and the house also works very nicely for two families with kids. Of course when we stay there each of our kids likes their own room, so that works too. After a day playing in the mountains, we like a good night sleep, so we brought in all new mattresses, bedding and linens. Comfort is key!
The oversized and well supplied kitchen with double oven and microwave has plenty of space to prepare big meals when needed. On the nights when you have been playing hard and don't want to cook, great restaurants in Salida or Buena Vista are only 15 minutes away.
The master bedroom is gorgeous, with a king size log frame bed and a comfy reading chair. A sliding glass door looks out to the mountains and opens on to our large back porch right next to the hot tub The master bath has a shower and a large soaking tub with a picture window looking into the forest. An annex off of the master bedroom is what we call our 'map room'. In addition to a futon couch, there is a desk and bookcase full of quality maps, guide books, and selected local brochures to help you plan your next adventure.
Speaking of the hot tub, this is truly a tub with a view! At sunset you can watch deer and sometimes elk grazing in the meadow below, while alpine glow turns the top of Mt Shavano pink. Looking to the southeast you look out over the entire Arkansas Valley, with Green Mountain, Cameron Mountain, and Big Baldy off in the distance. After dark you are treated to a starry sky that's unbelievable. Clear skies with virtually no light pollution make this a super location to watch the stars, and soak away any aches and pains from hiking earlier in the day.
The sliding glass door from the kitchen also opens onto a lovely stone back porch, where you will find a six burner gas grill, a picnic table, and plenty of space to eat outside when the weather is nice. Another picnic table sits a short way up the ridge for that dinner in the woods experience. On the very rare rainy days, or if you just want to experience a little mountain solitude, you can enjoy sitting on our large covered front porch, looking out into the woods in front of the house. During the Spring Runoff, there is a seasonal stream that runs across the front of the property. You can enjoy listening to the bubbling sounds while sitting on the front porch, or walk down to a small bench we have right next to the stream and daydream the time away enjoying the water and watching birds or animals move through the forrest.
This summer, the kids decided to add a horse shoe pit to the back 'yard', and they put it together pretty much on their own. We also added another bench out by the horse shoe pit, and it turns out to have one of the best views on our property. Now we can sit out and watch the kids play, and enjoy the view across the valley at the same time!
Aside from the privacy, the views, and the abundant wildlife, our favorite part about this house is how convenient it is to everything the valley has to offer. Three minutes up the road and you are on forest service land, with trailheads accessing peaks, cross country skiing, and the Colorado Trail. You are just five minutes from white water rafting and Prospectors Village, one of the best rock and gem shops in the Rockies. Mt Princeton Hot Springs and Chalk Creek are just 10 minutes away. The road up Chalk Creek gives you access to one of the largest sections of wild back country that Colorado has to offer. And speaking of gems, in 30 minutes you can be skiing at Monarch Mountain, one of the friendliest ski areas we have ever experienced. The Arkansas river is now the single largest segment of gold medal trout stream in the state. There are at least 10 public access points within a 15 minute drive of the house, giving you many sections of river to fish. Chalk Creek (also less than 15 minutes away) runs for miles up into the National Forest, with lots of great access and even more fish to chase after.
In short, unless you are looking for crowds, there is no better place for a mountain vacation anywhere in the state. That's why we love this place as much as we do, and we are confident that you will too!
By the way, while there are good pictures on this site, we have a ton more on our own website. We also have all kinds of information on the many fun things to do in the area, and some of our favorite places to visit. There is a link at the bottom of the page, or you can go to bealermountainhome.com. If the calendar shows booked, send us a note anyway, or follow the link to our owner website. There you will find another property (Adventure Central, also on VRBO) and a link for our property manager, who has several more fantastic properties nearby. See you soon!

About: Greetings from the Bealer Frye Family. We share a passion for hiking and wildlife, and have worked diligently to introduce our kids to all the different ways to play in the mountains. While we live and work in Texas, our hearts are always up here. Scot went to college in Colorado (University of Colorado, class of 86) and lived in the Glenwood Springs area for a while. He has hiked, camped, skied, rafted and fished throughout the mountain regions of the state. Lea grew up in Pennsylvania, but has enjoyed many trips to the state since getting married to Scot, and has yet to meet a mountain she doesn't want to climb.
Why Salida: We knew we wanted a permanent place in the mountains, but the big name Colorado resorts were way too crowded. The Arkansas River Valley has some of the best mountain country in the state, the very best river for rafting, and insanely good fishing. Top that off with a ski area that isn't crowded, easy access from the Colorado Springs airport, and a tolerable drive from our home in Texas, and we knew we had found a great place to keep coming back to.
The first time Scot came up to look at the property, five elk came out of the woods then just as quickly dissapeared down the hillside. He was sold right then, and the name Elk Ridge was born. The house was in great shape, but we had slightly different tastes than the original owners (we bought it from the person who built it), so we put in all new flooring, repainted, and took out some walls to give the living room a more open feel.
Our three kids have been crazy about the place since we bought it, and have helped to put their personal touch on each of the three bedrooms. While the print of the elk in the living room is from a local artist, all of the photographs you find throughout the house were taken during out many adventures, many of which are near here.
