Our rustic-style cabin is set on a beautifully treed double lot with the Steinhatchee River its main attraction. Upstairs balcony is built right over the River, for enjoyable views of the River, along with the conservation area across from the home, which makes for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.
Then bring a small fishing boat, kayak or canoe, or rent one from the many marinas in the area, and spend some hours on the Steinhatchee River. Upstream is Steinhatchee Falls, a historic sight, and downstream is the Gulf of Mexico, known for its off-shore fishing and scalloping. We are living on the upper section of the River, where small boats are fine, but it is not deep water all the way to the Gulf.
We call our cabin 'The Rustic.' The cabin is an old fishing/hunting cabin. It is rustic--plain and simple accomodations, nothing fancy, but great for relaxing and enjoying 'Old Florida'. It has solid wood walls and flooring, plain wood furniture, a great bar area with bar stools. It sits on the most lovely wooded lot overlooking the River. The entire setting highlights the rural, peaceful setting of 'Old Florida.'
The cabin has two bedrooms with double beds. Living room has built-in bunk beds, as well as a built-in couch which doubles as a bed. Fully furnished, with all kitchen equipment and utensils, linens and bedding. Sleeps up to seven people.
Cabin located off Highway 51, down dead-end dirt road, which is perfect for a quiet and peaceful vacation.
Main features of the cabin are the fireplaces. One fireplace upstairs in the living room, for an enjoyable and cozy evening. A second fireplace is downstairs in the large concrete area open to outdoors, great for cooking marshmallows and watching the wildlife and River. The cabin was an old fishing/hunting cabin, and is located down a dead-end limerock road. It is nothing fancy, just plain and simple for enjoying a little of 'Old Florida'.

We chose the Steinhatchee area for our winter vacation because we wanted a rural experience away from the crowds. During the winter, southern Florida is rife with snowbirds and the panhandle area seems to have row after row of high-rise condos. But the big bend region of Florida (Steinhatchee/Suwannee) is known as the forgotten coast. I think it's been forgotten because there are so few sandy beaches and little in the way of modern conveniences. Some might say it's...desolate. But it truly is a nature lover's paradise. If you're looking for a wilderness adventure, this is the place. Steinhatchee is a small fishing village with few businesses but you can get groceries, gas, and other essentials. There are inns and marinas for boaters and charter fishing. And there are several restaurant/bars in town if you feel the need to socialize. But we were here to commune with nature and were rewarded with flora/fauna too innumerable to list. We explored the marshes, beaches, and forests with our car, bikes, and canoe. When we paddled the creeks and rivers we felt like we were in the Amazon - wild and exotic. A nice thing about the Steinhatchee river is that the slow current allows you to paddle in either direction, eliminating the need to spot a car. The farther upriver you go, the fewer cabins you'll see until eventually there are none. Our cabin (the"Rustic"), was cozy with all the creature comforts one might need. If there is a downside, it's that the well water, while drinkable, has a strong sulfur odor. But jugs of drinking water can be bought in town which is just a few miles down the road. No biggie, that! We think the cabin's highlight is the spacious balcony/deck overlooking the river. If you're quiet, it isn't long before the myriad creatures come alive. At night? Stars - millions of them! That balcony is a front row seat to the best show on Earth. There are neighboring cabins but they appear to be seasonal "get-aways" and were unoccupied during our stay (Feb/March) so things were very, very quiet. Just what we wanted. Did I say quiet? The cacophony of night noise sent shivers up our spines. Wow! We had a very pleasant stay and owner Bethany Mousadi was charming and attentive. If you're looking for the Taj Mahal, this ain't it. But if you want a quiet, comfortably rustic cabin in a wooded area right on a beautiful river, this is the place. We'll be back! About the owner: We are the Mousadi Family - there are 5 of us, and we love the Steinhatchee 'Old Florida' area. This is our get-a-way cabin on the River. We bring our kayaks and spend a lot of time on the water. We also bring our boat, and dock it at River Haven Marina where we are minutes from the Gulf of Mexico for scalloping, snorkeling, fishing and enjoying the water! We have a nice 'family friendly' cabin that we hope you will enjoy, too!
Why the Owner Chose Steinhatchee:
This 'cabin in the woods' is our favorite choice for a family vacation. The kids can run and play in the big yard, ride bikes up and down the dead-end road, kayak on the water. We can enjoy the BBQ grill and the fireplace, roasting marshmellows in the evenings. We love the peace and quiet of the area, the wildlife, and the water.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
This is a 'get away from it all' location. It is so peacful and calming right on the River. We love sitting on the dock, fishing and relaxing. The deer come up across the River in the State Conservation Area. Also seen have been otters, manatees, owls, wild pigs, and much more. This is nature at the maximum--because then you go to the Gulf, and see all the sea life, too. It can't get any better than this!
