Built in 1914 by the Leavitt family, Stillwater Cottage is a one and a half story cedar-shingled Maine camp that sits on the western edge of Three Mile Pond (1077 acres), approximately 10 miles east of Augusta. While it has been updated with some modern conveniences, the camp retains its classic character. As you enter through the kitchen door, you will notice the vintage linoleum floor and the Gibson four-burner electric stove. Ceramic tiled counters and new cabinets have been recently installed, and the kitchen is complete and outfitted with a food processor, microwave, blender, lots of pots, pans, cutlery, dishes, wine glasses... all of which are updated as needed. Breakfast essentials include coffee percolator, French coffee press, Italian cafeteria, and toaster. We even supply the coffee!
The living room is a comfortable place for congregating with friends or relaxing with a good book. Choose between the camel-back sofa, wing-back chair and ottoman, or Windsor chairs. There is a gas stove to warm the morning chill. We have a small collection of CDs if you'd like some background music, but there's nothing like listening to the water lapping against the rocks at the edge of the pond and the call of the loons. A new flat screen TV with CD, DVD, and video tape capability is also provided. We have some video tapes and DVD's, but you might want to bring your favorites with you.
Step out to the screened/glassed porch for the main attraction: sunrise over Three Mile Pond. We like to have all our meals on the porch, as the tablecloth and wooden chairs give it the feel of a sidewalk cafe. The universal standing dock is only a few steps from the porch, and it's a perfect spot for enjoying that first cup of coffee as you settle into one of the Adirondack-style chairs. There is seating for six, a pot of herbs for cooking use, and a potter's table for use as a side table. If you are bringing a boat, the public dock is a short distance away. The water is shallow, so no diving for safety's sake!
All three bedrooms are on the second floor. Two of them have one double bed each with newer mattresses (2005). The third bedroom is also known as the game room. Besides having a mahogany acorn-carved single bed, this room contains old and new board games, drawing paper, colored pencils and books. There is a fourth room designated for hanging clothing, storing suitcases, and ironing. It also has a dresser and blow-dryer and is used as a dressing room which frees up the bathroom downstairs.
The bathroom is on the first floor and features a claw-foot tub/shower with a rose shower head and skirted corner sink.
A 12-foot aluminum row boat is docked outside the cottage and is available for use at your own risk. Eight life jackets are provided, and a liability waiver must be signed prior to renting the cottage even if you do not initially plan to use the boat. We have new oar locks and oars for the row boat. We have also added two Kiwi Lobo kayaks for your use and pleasure.
As with many Maine camps, running water is drawn from the pond. You will need to provide your own water for drinking. In the past we have recommended filling up at the spring located on Route 3, however, a warning has been posted advising excess arsenic so that is no longer advisable. Two 5 gallon containers are available if you have another source. Use all the pond water you need, but do not waste this natural resource. Keep it in the pond and not in our septic system!
Blankets, pillows, and bedspreads are provided. Please bring your own sheets, pillow cases, and towels (both kitchen and bath). If you are traveling from far away and if you are not able to bring these things, we can arrange to provide them for an additional fee.
We supply toilet paper, bathing soap, paper towels, dish detergent, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, garbage bags, cleaning products.
You will also find all the kitchen basics already there for you: condiments, spices, herbs, teas, coffee, sugar, flour, Splenda, cooking oil, olive oil, balsamic and cider vinegar. *****We love our little camp and it will be in good and clean order when you arrive. PLEASE LEAVE THE CAMP AS YOU FIND IT!*****
Small pets are permitted for a cost of $50 per pet, per week. This is taxable per the State of Maine (7%). Part of the yard is fenced and relatively escape-free depending upon the tenacity and size of your pet. Please walk your dog outside of the fenced area so that the plants we are trying to grow are not killed by urine. We are developing a garden and cannot have a dog who likes to dig. Please be aware that neighbors have dogs and cats, so exercise discretion in walking your pet. Do not leave your dog alone. We do not want dogs that will bark continually, go to the bathroom in the house, or ones that will scratch the doors! Whether on the property or off walking along the camp road, fastidious and immediate clean-up is a must! PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS ON A FLEA/TICK PROGRAM FOR OUR SAKE AND YOURS!
There are only six cottages on this camp road. Everyone who comes here does so to enjoy the quiet, the loons, the ducks, the eagles, the blue heron, the sunrises. It is a peaceful place. It is not high-tech or trendy, but a bit of old Maine. If this suits you and if you are respectful of and understand old places, you will be happy at Stillwater Cottage. Please email questions. We will send an additional slide show for your viewing. WELCOME! |
