Location: Vanderhorst Plantation, Kiawah Island, Charleston Area, South Carolina, USA (Address Is 235 Glen Abbey)

Accommodations:  House, 5 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths (Sleeps 12)

Our Vanderhorst Plantation beach house is in a quiet residential neighborhood behind the second security gate. It sits on a large, heavily wooded lot with a gorgeous lagoon view from almost every room. Spacious living areas with vaulted ceilings, heart pine floors and skylights make this 4200 square foot house bright, warm, and open.

Our home was designed for family vacations or groups of friends. Typical guests are either 3 families of 4 or a multi-generational family of 12. The layout is conducive to both easy living and lively entertaining. The hub of activity on the first floor is a large eat-in kitchen which adjoins the family room. Our pink and gray granite countertops remind you of the sandy beach which lies just minutes from the front door. In the middle of the kitchen there is a bar height island with 2 comfortable stools for those who want to kibitz with the cook. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans, small appliances and a variety of utensils which will allow you to fix anything from a crab boil to Thanksgiving dinner. A starter supply of detergents for dishes and laundry, glass cleaner, a sponge and coffee filters are kept at the house.

The interior of the house is anchored by the Great Room, a space made light-filled and dramatic with vaulted ceilings and glass doors leading to the deck. We have a separate dining room which can make special occasions very special. Both the great room and the family room have TVs/VCRs and a fireplace with a slate surround. The great room also has a wet bar, a DVD player and a stereo. The house has wireless High Speed Internet access.

The first floor master suite is a private paradise. The bedroom itself is a very spacious room with a king-size bed, dresser, desk, overstuffed chair and ottoman for reading, and a loveseat set in a bay window. Sliding glass doors provide direct access to the deck where two teak rocking chairs or a pair of comfortable chaises invite guests to relax and watch the activity on the lagoon out back. Just imagine the thrill of a great blue heron sweeping down to the edge of the lagoon to do a little fishing. The en suite master bathroom has a marble floor, an extra-large shower with built-in bench seating, a separate tub, and twin vanities set in white corian. The walk-in closet adjoining the bathroom is huge. In addition to having space for all your clothes, golf clubs and luggage, it can easily accommodate a crib. In fact, we keep a full-size crib and a high chair at the house. One of the four guest bedrooms (queen-size bed and full bath), a full-size laundry room, and a powder room complete the downstairs floor plan.

A wide deck overlooking the lagoon spans the entire length of the back of the house and includes built-in bench seating as well as outdoor dining furniture and a gas grill. A hot-tub is attractively tied into the deck. The fact that it's been placed in a shady spot makes it enjoyable year around, but it's especially delightful in late fall, winter, and early spring.

The second level of the house is one extra large bedroom with four twin beds and a full bath. This "dorm room" has its own TV,VCR and DVD player, a comfy chaise, and lots of closet and floor space. It's ideal for parents who want young children in the room with them or for families which include siblings, cousins, assorted friends, etc. who enjoy fellowship all day long.

On the third level, two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two twins, share a full bath. The twin room has a balcony overlooking the lagoon.

    • Hi Debby, I've been meaning to send a letter of appreciation since returning from Kiawah this summer, and alas, here it is! You have a wonderful home there and its has all the right touches for a family vacation. The space was perfect. we could put the little ones to bed, have nice large adult dinners, and enjoy the different living spaces for reading time, puzzle time, or just lounging. Thanks for sharing your space with us and we hope to return one day! Kirsten p.s. Stan was wonderful! He came by to check on the house, noticed us cramming into one car to leave the island and offered to share a ride! Very nice :)

    • Debby, thank you for sharing your fabulous home with us and allowing our son and daughter-in-law to have their dream beach wedding on 04/04/09. The house was perfect and easily accommodated our out of town guests. We also had the bridal brunch and the rehearsal dinner catered at the house. The kitchen was well supplied and the large deck was great for entertaining. We would definitely rent this house again without hesitation.

    • This was a great place for a family reunion, birthday celebration and Thanksgiving all in one week. We had 12 adults and one infant and never felt crowded. Kiawah Island is an amazing place for its recreation and natural habitat. We had access within minutes to the recreation – beach, golf, biking and the running paths were great. The home was spacious enough for a family gathering yet provided adequate space for individual and group activities – the deck, family room, living room and kitchen area were great places to get together. With several cooks in the kitchen, we were able to find everything we needed to prepare some great meals and not trip on one another. The sleeping arrangements were separate from the gathering spaces so those who wanted to retire early were able to get a good night sleep. We were also close enough to Charleston for a day trip and sightseeing and still get back to the peace and tranquility of the Island in the late afternoon. This was a perfect find and made for a memorable week!

    • The pictures did not do justice to this beautiful home!! Our entire group (8 friends) was so impressed and pleased with the accommodations. My reward for doing the search was that my husband & I got to use the master suite and his first words upon entering were "just go ahead and book it again for next year." I have stayed in a number of vacation rentals, but none so lovely, well furnished and equipped as yours. There was nothing needed that was not found in your magnificent kitchen. We found the information about the area provided to be very useful. We were very satisfied with the recommendations you made about restaurants. The men golfed four days, did some fly fishing in the lagoon while the ladies did marathon shopping and two trips into Charleston. Thanks for being such a superb hostess in absentia!!! Hope we can do it again sometime. Naomi

    • Debby, Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us! It was a perfect place to vacation with extended family. We were six adults and six children and we really enjoyed all the space the house provided. Bike rides to the beach was highlight for everyone. We hope to come again, soon!

    • To Anyone considering renting 235 Glen Abbey… This home was perfect in so many ways. The bedroom arrangements easily accommodated multiple families (in our situation…my husband and three children, my mom, my dad and stepmother!) with a bit of separation and privacy for all. We actually had 4 beds to spare! All the bedrooms are beautifully decorated and roomy. The master bedroom and bath were amazing. Our baby very happily slept in the walk-in closet about the size of his actual room at home! The kitchen is gorgeous…nicely stocked with plenty of utensils, appliances and necessities. We hosted a lovely Thanksgiving meal for 15 people. The layout of the kitchen and the family area allows for cooks and helpers to be able to participate in fun while still working. The living quarters were very cozy and comfortable. The two distinct social areas made it easy for a couple different activities to be going on – a football game on one TV, a kids show on the other, with puzzles and games being played all the while. We had glorious weather so were able to enjoy the deck, the hot tub and the view of the lagoon. Every sunny day we watched a huge alligator sunning himself (on the opposite shore!) We can’t wait for our next Thanksgiving on Kiawah! Sincerely, Julianne Arvizu

    • Debby, you have a wonderful home inside and out. There was plenty of space for all of us to have our “own space” and the common areas were large enough to accommodate our group especially the kitchen. We played two rounds of golf each day so the hot tub was a necessity at night! When we return to Kiawah your home will be first on our list.

    • Debby, Thank you again for the rental of your wonderful house. My family of 4 and two other families of four all stayed here for our kid's Spring Break. We could not of asked for a better choice of a house. We had so much room and the "dorm" room was our kid's dream. A place to hide out and have slumber parties. The beach was a quick bike ride away and the wondeful deck on the back with hot tub added to the great time. We have been coming to Kiawah for the last 15 years and couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Thanks again and will we definitely be getting back with you another time.

    • We had 3 families stay for a week in this home. With 4 boys and 2 girls, the "loft" room was a perfect retreat for the kids by day, and the boys by night. The 3 large master rooms were very spacious for the parents. We ate in every night, alternating families cooking, and had plenty of dishes and such. It's a 5 minute bike ride to the beach. If you're traveling with several families - this home is a great option.

    • Dear Debby, I just wanted to write and say how much we enjoyed your house. The decorations are beautiful and very welcoming for a family holiday. I grilled leg of lamb for Christmas dinner, and I was most impressed that your wonderfully stocked kitchen had a meat thermometer! Overall this is the best house we have ever rented for a holiday family get together. I hope we can come back some day,
