Location: Lake Gardner, White Mountains, New Hampshire, USA (5 mins to Woodsville NH & Wells River VT,40 mins to Lincoln)

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 5-6)

Keywords:  Vacation home, lake house, white mountains, swim raft, boats, outdoors, lakefront cabin,

The house is so close to Lake Gardner that our kids can often be found fishing for smallmouth bass right from the large wrap around deck while the adults are playing cards or catching up on our summer reading from the comfort of an Adirondack chair. The big kids, or big kids at heart, can dive in from the end of the dock and if you are really good at holding your breath you just might be able to make the swim underwater all the way to the private raft. Smaller children, and those that like to ease themselves into the cooler waters, can wade into the clean, spring-fed lake from the sandy shoreline. A paddle around the lake has proven to reward the fortunate ones with sitings of bald eagles, loon and other water fowl. If you want nature to do all of the work then just take a quick trip to the center of Bath NH, grab your beverage of choice at the oldest general store in the country, walk across the covered bridge, and drop your butt in a inner tube and take a leisurely journey down the Ammonoosuc River. There is a dirt road that runs along the river which makes for a great mountain bike ride. Deer, turkey, moose and black bear call the White Mountains their home so bring your camera if you decide to take a drive or hike any of the nearby trails. Walk around the grounds and pick blue, red and black berries or go to a nearby farm and check out the local produce and the animals. The Appalachian Trail is nearby but fortunately, since not everyone is game for a 2175 mile hike, there are plenty of tamer options including the famed Lost River Caves and Franconia Notch. If you want all of the glory, but none of the work, there is also the option of the Cannon Aerial tram.

After soaking in nature for the day it is always comforting to come home to a fully stocked kitchen and cook up a feast. If you prefer to leave the cooking to others there are several top rated options nearby for evening the most discerning of tastes. Polly's Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill, Colatina's Exit in Bradford, and Woodstock Station are all tops on our list of family favorites. This prime location has modern conveniences like grocery stores, restaurants, etc.. within 5-10 minutes from the house as well as more traditional New England sites such as country stores, covered bridges (we have 3 in Bath), antique shops, waterfalls, farm stands, apple orchards, fairs and more. The entertainment varies from mini golf to challenging 18 hole courses, amusement parks including Clark's Trading Post, Whale's Tale Water Park and Santa's Village, and even the longest candy counter in the world at Chutter's in Lincoln.

Whether you wish to stay lakeside for the day or go on an adventure, it is nice to come home and throw in a DVD or catch up on what is going on in the world on the 32" flat screen. There is surely a game for everyone to enjoy in our fully stocked game closet. S'mores and ghost stories are always a treat and the amphitheater-style natural stone seating that surrounds our fire pit adds to the experience.

Come bedtime, one upstairs bedroom has a bunk bed with a full size bed on the bottom and twin on top while the master has a king sized bed. There is also a pull out couch downstairs if needed. If you leave the curtains open, you can fall asleep looking at the stars and wake up to watch the steam rising off the water as the sun rises above the mountains. Linens and towels are available but we simply ask that if you use them that you kindly wash them in the on site washer and dryer before you leave. We hope that you and your family will come experience the best that the White Mountain's have to offer.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2008

We bought this place after renting it ourselves for two years and couldn't think of not having it as part of our future. Our two kids, ages 2 and 5, love it here as much as we do so we decided to buy it so we could be sure we would be able to continue to enjoy it for years to come. We love the outdoors but also like having some luxuries here and there like being able to go to Dunkin Donuts for coffee or heading to Walmart or Shaws to grab whatever we forgot to pack. We consider ourselves foodies and have found a few great places nearby to enjoy some fine cooking, superb wine lists, and fresh craft beers. Colatina's Exit in Bradford, VT and Woodstock Station in Woodstock NH are two of our family favorites. Swimming, fishing, hiking, playing games, picking berries/apples, site seeing or just doing nothing are all part of each visit we make here. Hopefully you will fall in love with it for the same reasons we did.

Why the Owner Chose Lake Gardner

We were looking for a family vacation home and were renting this place ourselves for a couple of years so when it came on the market we jumped at the opportunity. The location is great as it is everything that we are looking for in a retreat in that it is close modern conveniences and things to do yet when you are at the house you feel like you are away from it all.

The Unique Benefits of this House

We split our days between staying at the house all day or going on a road trip and both are equally enjoyable. When we stay at the house we often will have a big breakfast together and then either go on a family hike or some of us will go fishing and the others will hang back to read and relax. We often would follow up the morning activities with a barbecue lunch and then a group swim out to the raft where we'll bask in the sun for a while and head back in. Occasionally we will grab the inner tubes and hit the nearby Ammanoosuc River for a relaxing float down the mountain river. In the evening we break out the cocktails around the fire pit. On nights we don't feel like having a fire we'll keep the kids entertained with the game closet or the DVD library and hang out on the wrap around deck and watch the stars. When we do decide to go out we might plan an excursion to Santa's Village, Lost Caves or Franconia Notch. We might go on a tubing adventure at the river down the street or just hit the road and see what we can see. Whatever we do we often follow it all up with dinner at one of the nearby restaurants so we aren't cooking and cleaning the whole time. Then we go to bed, wake up, and do it all over again. It is perfect.

I missed the Lake this year!

Guest: Margaret (NJ)
Date of Stay: 07/25/09 Review Submitted: 09/05/10

I stayed at the house on Lake Gardner the last week of July in 2008 (with family) and 2009 (with a friend). Both vacations were wonderful. The house is clean, filled with everything you'll need and lends itself to relaxation. The lake is beautiful at all times of the day and in all kinds of weather. It's close to everything, yet off the beaten track. I didn't get there this year, and have been missing it immensely, but I want to get back next year if Matt and Erica will let me!

Peaceful Get Away!

Driving down the dirt road to the house already put me at peace from it all, it's just an immediate calm as you pull in to the driveway to a house literally on the lake. Going to bed and waking up every morning to the "sound" of the lake was perfect..canoeing, kayaking and fishing from the deck is my kind of vacation :) It is very close to everything..if you have to run out and grab more stuff for smore's the stores are close by! Many surrounding towns that were great to check out too (Littleton and Woodstock)..Polly's Pancake House (Sugar Hill, NH) was fabulous and worth the trip! Colatina's in Bradford, VT is a great place to go for some authentic Italian cuisine (only 20 minutes away!)...but, also fun to just cook in and enjoy a nice, relaxing dinner/drinks on the deck...I highly recommend this house on the lake!

Such a relaxing time!

We spent a wonderful, relaxing time at your Lake Gardner house! The view is amazing - especially from the upstairs bedrooms, and everything was very family-friendly! Our three year old loved playing in the lake, and the beach area is very toddler friendly! The property is very clean and obviously loved, as it was very well-maintained! Easy driving access to restaurants and shops, and very quiet and peaceful. We'll definitely return!
