St. Roman de Malegarde is a hillside village of 250 people. Just down the cobblestone path from our house is a 17th-century spring-fed fountain. (The water is fresh, pure, cold, delicious for drinking!) There is one bar/café, ideal for morning café au lait, and lunch or dinner if you make a reservation.
The house has two stories, stone, with a small garden, overlooking the Provençal countryside; we have a beautiful view of farmlands, vineyards, rolling hills, and mountains in the distance. The house has two bedrooms upstairs; one with two single beds (which can be moved together) and a second with a double bed and adjoining bathroom. Downstairs there is one large, light room which serves as kitchen, dining, and living room. (In addition there is a wine cellar and a garage.) The garden, which enjoys the same lovely view, has a table and chairs with sun umbrella. The house comes equipped with a washing machine and a clothesline in the back yard. All necessary linens, pots and pans, etc. are provided.
Both the Alps and the Mediterranean are located within easy driving range, about an hour and a half away. You may find, though, that the immediate region is so rich that you do not have much desire to leave it. Avignon is 45 minutes away, Orange about 20 minutes, and Vaison-la-Romaine about ten. The nearest town for a patisserie, boulangerie, etc. is Tulette, about a mile and a half away. The pleasant country roads which weave through the farmlands make for superb cycling. Colorful open-air markets move from town to town during the week, offering an almost unbelievable variety of cheeses, fresh vegetables, tomatoes from heaven, dozens of specialty olives, meats, french breads, coffees, spices, lavender, gifts, antiques, Provençal fabrics, and even clothes.
There is a fresh fish hatchery nearby, and, this being Côtes du Rhone country, there are innumerable vineyards and opportunities for wine tasting practically everywhere you go. There is a public swimming pool in nearby Tulette (an easy bike ride away) and a beautiful water park within a ten-minute drive.
