Lastra A Signa house description

Villa Lysis is located on the border of a charming hamlet perched on a hill top just a few miles west of Florence.

The villa was built in the twelfth century as a fortified Lombard farm to guard the fertile Arno Valley.

In 1989 the property passed into the hands of the present owner who embarked on an immense renovation, which respected the authenticity of the space whitout neglecting any of the modern comforts. In the process of the renovation the original Tuscan style framework, frescoes, wooden beamed ceilings, stone walls, brick vault, and cotto floors were all preserved.

The villa has been furnished, equipped and decorated to the highest standards respecting authentic aesthetic and functional considerations. The furnishings and decorations are a combination of fine antiques and updated, high quality sofas, chairs and beds. The warm, cozy and quaint interior of the villa gives life to the feel of Tuscany, while maintaining a unique pleasing atmosphere - a rare combination of traits to find among the rental options of this countryside.

The main entrance gives way to a large and elegant living room with an open fireplace, original cotto floor, lovely beamed ceiling, library of art, cuisine, and travel books, not to mention all the comforts and conveniences of modern life (satellite television, CD player, radio, DVD player with large selection of movies in original language). In addition, the living room has access to a garden.

Off the living room is a neoclassical style double bedroom with an oversized bed (140 x 190 cm ) and 2 windows with view over the quiet courtyard. Adjacent to the bedroom is a large full bathroom appointed with a private shower area.

The kitchen has a spacious cooking plane with 5 gas range and electric oven, microwawe, American coffee maker and an abundance of cooking utensils. This finely appointed kitchen is equipped for the preparation of a light snack or an entire gourmet dinner.

The formal dining room is enchanting with its large Tuscan style fireplace, wood-beamed ceilings, cotto floor and view to the garden via a large window and glass paned door. Treat yourself by serving meals in the style that one would expect in Tuscany - with stemware and china provided.

On the first Italian floor (second level) there are two double bedrooms and a full bathroom. The master bedroom is graced with an iron framed king size bed, beamed ceilings and a view of the Tuscan hillside with Florence visible in the distance. The second bedroom has a double bed (matrimonial or twins), a floral detailed ceiling from the 20th century and 2 windows with view over the quiet courtyard. Both bedrooms on the second level are air-conditioned. The bathroom is equipped with a tub and is decorated with lovely Italian tile and cabinetry .

A Medieval Cellar with stone walls and a curved vaulted ceiling serve as an enchanting dining space for six. As a note of interest, during the most recent renovation, a hidden vault was discovered filled with period pieces which now adorn the villa.

From the garden there is a gorgeous panoramic view of the Arno Valley with Florence visible on the horizon. From another side of the Villa you will be mesmorized by the tranquility of an enormous 18th Century baroque monastery residing on a nearby hilltop. The surrounding area of the villa is covered with quaint pathways, olive tree groves, vineyards and again, SPECTACULAR VIEWS!

The yard and gardens are adorned with wrought iron furnishings and comfortable lounge chairs from which you may enjoy the scenery. In addition, an outdoor Jacuzzi ( no heat, just bubbles - open mid May/mid September-depend on the weather ) is available for your pleasure.

Only few steps away from the villa there is the gourmet restaurant Edy Piu'.

We stayed for one week in late March 2014. Andrea was as others described, helpful, kind, and the perfect host. He arranged for Chef Carla to come one evening and as others have stated, she was great! Oh my, the food! We stayed in this big villa as a couple but had our niece and friend spend a couple of nights for dinner. There was so much food left over! We loved it. The house has so much history and character. It is not a generic cookie-cutter hotel but a house filled with charm, quirks and all. We ate next door one evening and enjoyed our meal there as well. Thank you, Andrea, and we hope to cross paths again!

It all started when we arrived at the Florence airport and we were met by our taxi, arranged by our Villa owner, Andrea. It was such an easy transfer and an enjoyable start to our two weeks. We arrived at the historic 500 year old Villa to be greeted by our host and we were immediately treated like special guests. We got the tour of the Villa, settled in and then were driven to the local supermarket (Sunday afternoon) by our host where we were able to purchase some basic needs for the Villa; local food and beverage. We discussed our plans and the host offered some local options for the open days in our schedule. Our first evening set the stage; wine, cheese and prosciutto in the garden overlooking Florence and Lastra A Signa, amazing and relaxing. It only got better from there. The Villa was all we expected and more. We learned a great deal about the history of the Villa, the neighborhood and the region. The neighborhood Restuarant was not only good but the staff, owner and chefs were truly a tourists dream; attentive and welcoming to locals and guests alike. We were treated to some private tours by our Villa owner to trips into the Chianti Region and through the Tuscany Region, enjoying wineries, shops, markets, butchers, castles, pizzeria's and the amazing history of the country. The architecture, churches, people and sheer beauty of the landscape made for quite a memory, in pictures and etched in out memories. We were fortunate enough to enjoy day and overnight trips to Rome, Venice, Cinque Terre, Greve, Certaldo and San Gimingnano. As much as we enjoyed all of those side trips there was something special about coming back to the Villa to enjoy a relaxing evening in the garden. We took the recommendation of Andrea and booked Carla (Chef) to come to the Villa one evening to cook for us. We had so much food with such a variety and we paired it with some wines we purchased from the wineries as well as the wines Carla brought. It was so good we had to eat some of everything and probably ate too much! We have only been home a few weeks but we already miss the Villa, Andrea, the food, wine and people of Italy. Our time at the Villa was more comfortable than we expected. The Villa was clean, spacious and so full of history. We have already told many people about how fantastic everything was. We were so fortunate to have chosen the Villa Lysis, Andrea and Lastra A Signa, it all made for a true first class experience. Thank you!

We were 3 adult couples and spent a week in beautiful Tuscany. The house was perfect with numerous areas to find privacy if you needed. Andrea, the owner, was amazing. Anything we needed, he took care of for us and we so enjoyed spending time with him, we had dinner together on our last night at a fabulous little restaurant right next door to the villa. It was so good, we ate there on 3 separate occasions. The house is very large and absolutely gorgeous with a beautiful terrace. Andrea totally renovated a few years back & it is exactly what you would want & expect from a Tuscan home. His attention to detail was outstanding & I loved just wandering the house & the property to take it all in. Thank you Andrea for being so kind & welcoming and our offer stands, should you come to Toronto we would love to return your hospitality and show you our city

We are two couples in our 60s. We had previously (4 years ago) spent a week in Tuscany in an apartment in a walled town and we were looking for more of a rural experience this time. Villa Lysis overlooking the Arno Valley is exactly as described by the owner and reviewed by previous renters who have offered such positive comments. Our host, Andrea, was most accommodating, yet unobtrusive. We had rented a car and found the central location to be ideal for touring (Cinque Terre, Chianti Valley, Siena, Lucca, and of course, Florence). We toured all day and then spent our evenings on the patio. Surprisingly, we made good use of the "Cold Tub" to soak our feet after a long day - very refreshing. We would not hesitate to recommend Villa Lysis to our friends.

The property was exactly as described. Two of the three bedrooms were air conditioned - this was important as weather in August can be very hot. The house is charming - lots of character etc. It was well equipped - everything you need. Mr. Bertini, the owner, was very helpful - even took time to show us local restaurant and brought me to the garage to sort out a problem with our car. The house is on a hill and has great views. It is near to Florence which is easy to reach by car or train. There's a big supermarket nearby which is great. We enjoyed the local Pizzeria Ristorante da Bertone in Lastra - not expensive and all the locals eat there. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone.

We spent a lovely week at Villa Lysis. This was a beautiful comfortable old home in an incredibly picturesque area. It captured the history of Tuscany. All amenities were first class. The owner went out of his way to be helpful and kind, and we truly enjoyed getting to know him. He was a great ambassador for the area. The region was delightful to explore. The food was amazing as was the wine. We took suggestions from the owner for some wonderful tours. We would love to return again one day.

We were 2 parents and 2 teenage Daughters, we stayed a week and had a rental car. It was a hot July. The location is rather central in Tuscany, we took daily trips to chosen Destinations. The house location in the village provides a strong rural atmosphere, although modernisation is 3-5 minutes away (by car): supermarket, train station, gas station, etc. 2 minutes by foot you'll find a grocery store (early risers will find even croissants). The house itself was a big success: full of rural charm, a strong sensation of old and good, a style we knew only from books but perfectly suited to the region. We underestimated the value of the the Jaccuzi at first, but it turned out as a good place to end a hot day of sightseeing. The kitchen and dinning room were used in full, eating in the house was an important part of feeling at home. The owner, Mr. Bertini is an extension to the house: charming, man of culture, man of the world. He helped us willingly with everything, including what to visit. To me he is a kind of man that makes you envy his friends. If you're looking for a house full of character, a house which is a part of a quiet village, this one is highly recommended.

The house, ancient as it is, was perfectly comfortable, the bathrooms convenient and spacious with plenty of hot water, and the bedrooms make you feel as though you want to live there forever. And for me, a chef, the kitchen was great! The knives were sharp, the cooking utensils perfect, the gas top burner and oven, though metric, was easy to manage. I did a great roast pork with wild mushroom in white wine, fried squash blossoms and some Italian black cabbage. The living room was tastefully and beautifully appointed and the dining room a perfect place to enjoy a dinner. And the garden? Sipping morning coffee in the garden filled with Rosemary and Lavender overlooking Florence and the mountains in the distance is a treat that no one should miss. A few doors down is a place called Edi Piu and the food is incredible! We ate there five times and if you've never had Tuscan beef roasted over olive wood and served with a balsamic sauce this is the place to try it. In fact everything we ate there was superb. The chef(and owner) is a brilliant cook, and the owners daughter has eyes the color of the evening sky, and his wife most beautiful and "sympatico". Lovely, lovely people. Up the road, a short and scenic walk, is a farm that offers a great breakfast. Don't miss it. But most of all our host, Andre, is the soul of the Florentines. His kindness, thoughtfulness and genteel consideration to the four of us will never be forgotten He showed us a part of Italy that we could never have seen on our own, and I feel as though I have a new cousin. We will come back Thank you Andre. James Haller, Master Chef, Author and Educator

We were a family of six who stayed at this villa for a week, and had a great time. Andrea was wonderful to us, picking some of our party up at the station, taking us on a wine tasting tour, and even answering a call of distress early one morning to take one of us to his own doctor. Chef Carla's dinner was amazing, and we had a wonderful meal as well at the restaurant next door. We enjoyed touring around the area, but enjoyed even more returning to the peace and tranquility of our very own terrace with its wonderful view. The bedrooms are very comfortable, the washing machine worked fine, as did the appliances in the kitchen. The air conditioning upstairs was an added plus. We could not have asked for a better holiday. Barbara Montreal, Quebec

We arrived early on a Saturday morning and were welcomed by the owner, Andrea, who picked us up at the train station and brought us to the house. We were 4 hours early but he made arrangements for us to drop our things off at the house and have wonderful lunch at Edy Piu, right down the street from the villa. The villa itself is lovely. The bedrooms were very comfortable, the dining room is beautiful, the bathrooms large, the garden and its views were breathtaking! The Appenines across the valley on one side, and a view of Florence and the Duomo on the other. Although the villa was terrific, the owner is one of the best things about it. He was charming, knowledgeable, gracious, accommodating, and went out of his way to make us feel welcome. He took us to places we never would have known about, not only in Florence but in the Tuscan hill towns. He even arranged a special cooking class when we found that Carla was unavailable. I cannot recommend Villa Lysis highly enough. You will not be disappointed, you will be charmed. We stayed for two weeks and we can't wait to return.

                          Year Purchased: 1989

About: Personal chef Carla and I in Kennebunkport during our trip in the US few years ago. I was born and raised in a small village west of Florence but unfortunately located in the industrial area. My dream was always to lives up the beautiful hillside, with wineyards and olives trees around. I accomplish my dream in 1989 when I buy a very fascinating old mansion, but in a very poor condition ! I worked hard for 3 years to fix the house and then I start to rent few weeks in summer . All my clients was very happy with my hospitality and the business increased each year, so, after time I decided to move elsewhere in the same area and left the villa only for my guests.

                          Why Lastra A Signa:
I decided to buy this house because when I saw it the first time I immediately fall in love with ! The location was wonderful; on the top of the hill, with an amazing view overlooking the valley and Florence, the small hamlet was typical tuscan style, whitout any modern intrusion. The villa was owned in the past by a bourgeois family and still maintain some taste of elegance from the older time, with decorations and appliances. It was like jumping back into the XIX° cent. !

The Unique Benefits at this House:
House built in the XIII cent., quiet location, view, green area, wineyards and olives trees.
