Location: Lead, Black Hills, South Dakota, USA (5 Mins. to Bike Trail, 10 to Deadwood, 20 to Trout Fishing !) View Map

Accommodations:  Townhome, 2 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 5-6)

The Nugget is an 800 square foot, two-bedroom walkout just off Main Street in the charming Victorian mountain town of Lead, South Dakota. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed and the second bedroom has three twin beds.

Bright and comfortable, The Nugget got a fresh and extensive remodel in 2005 and is very nice and very clean. (The remodel included new wiring, plumbing, flooring, fixtures, new windows and much more. The bathroom was completely gutted in the remodel.) You'll sleep in comfort, especially with the two air conditioners, four ceiling fans and nice mattresses. Your kitchen is fully equipped, and all linens and towels are provided. There's even a washer and dryer. Just bring yourself and settle in!

The Nugget has some nice touches too: a Laz-E-Boy couch with built-in recliners, a separate reclining chair also, a large covered outdoor bike and equipment locker, a 65' X 30' parking area (great for motorcyles, trailers or RV's), and a couple of private outdoor sitting areas. All of this within walking distance of the grocery store, bars, restaurants, the discount store, the morning paper, etc, etc. There is also a large binder on the coffee table crammed full of information on what to do and see, complete with phone numbers, menus, hours of operation, etc., etc. At $120 a night, we think The Nugget is a very good value for your Black Hills vacation dollar and a great base for exploring the Black Hills.

You'll be centrally located to all of the fun in the Northern Black Hills: five minutes to the Mickelson Trail spur, a short ten minutes to the casinos of Deadwood, and within 20 minutes you'll be in unbelievably gorgeous Spearfish Canyon with your line in the water fishing for trout!!!

Available May through September. Be sure to see our calendar to check for availability.

A Pleasant Surprise

Guest: Jim (West Bend, WI)
Date of Stay: 06/12/11 Review Submitted: 07/25/11

The Nugget and the town of Lead were both pleasant surprises for me. Lead was a nice quiet town without being overly-touristy like many of the surrounding towns - with the Homestake mine as an attraction! The Nugget was spacious and UNBELIEVABLY CLEAN. Everything we needed was provided. Making arrangements and working with ownership was very easy through the entire process. You cannot go wrong with this property.

Owner response:Whew, "unbelieveably clean" is quite a standard to live up to! We try to always keep improving The Nugget and to make any surprises to the upside. Our cleaning gal/manager is fantastic, but as we also try to describe our place accurately, maybe "believeably clean" is an even better description. Thanks for the nice review Jim!

Great Home Base

Guest: Teresa H. (Mendon, Utah)
Date of Stay: 06/17/11 Review Submitted: 07/07/11

We used to own a time share but got really tired of the restrictions and the hassle. So we thought for our Black Hills Vacation we'd try Home Away and I'm so glad we did. The Nugget in Lead is a great little spot for a home base, nothin' fancy....but it was clean, well maintained and affordable. The beds were comfortable and for being on main street it was surprisingly private and quiet. Lead is a just a few miles from Deadwood so we were close enough to action of Wild Bill Days but also had a nice quiet place to come back to at the end of our full days of sightseeing. There is a grocery store within walking distance so we saved a ton on food by using the fully equipped kitchen and nice outdoor BBQ. The owner Mike is great to work with, very friendly, timely and responsive. The description and the pictures are accurate but don't really do it justice. It is an older place but it is clean and well taken care of. Great for a family on a budget, very affordable with all the comforts of home. We had a great time! Thanks Home Away!

Great base for the Black Hills

Guest: none (Des Moines, Wa. )
Date of Stay: 09/13/10 Review Submitted: 10/04/10

We stayed in this apartment 4 nights. It was a great place to stay for touring the Black Hills. It is as advertised. We especially appreciated the washer and dryer. Also, it was great to have non-stick frying pans! If you go, I definitely recommend the scenic drives, especially the Needles Highway and Spearfish canyon.

What a great place to stay while sight seeing in the Black Hills! We had everything we needed plus. There was plenty of room and hot water too for our small crowd of 6. The owner was also generous to let us have an extra person. One of the teenagers slept on a chair that unfolds into a foam bed. Our group from 12 to 82 years of age was impressed with the cleanliness, all the essentials, the quiet at night, and the location. The beds were very comfy and we got up feeling well rested. There is a grocery store on the next block for the times you get tired of eating out. The price was a steal for what we received. I highly recommend the Nugget in Lead!

Great for a family or small group

Our family of 5 stayed in The Nugget in June 2009 while working on our own project in the Hills. We arrived at night and drove right by it, not realizing that it was the tuck-under of the building on Main Street.... SO for those of you looking for it, go around the block.... :) Once there, it was perfect for our family. Well equipped kitchen, plenty of room for all of us to stretch out and eat together, and family movies to boot. Separate beds for all 3 kids was a MAJOR plus!

Worry Free Vacation

Guest: lbellin (Lake City, Iowa)
Date of Stay: 07/06/10 Review Submitted: 07/13/10

What a great vacation for our family of five. The description of the listing was accurate. The town of Lead is a wonderful town with incredibly friendly people and businesses. MIke is great to work with, answered all of our questions in a timely manner and gave a local contact number for while we stayed. I would recommend this property to anyone who inquired. We visited the attractions in Lead, Deadwood, Hill City, Keystone, Rapid City and the in between places, which seems to be many, all were a quick drive. The lodging exceeded my expectations. Mike even let me know that we left my son's psp before my son noticed he had misplaced it.

Very Charming and Close to Must See Attractions.....

Guest: Friends from South Texas (Corpus Christi, Texas)
Date of Stay: 06/29/10 Review Submitted: 07/06/10

I liked the spaciousness of this walkout/buiolding apartment. It was nice and relaxing to have a full kitchen with stove and full size fridge to enjoy a leizurely breakfast before heading out to a full day of activity at near by attractions (Deadwood, Stuirgis, Mount Rushmore, several National Parks). Washer and Dryer units also came in handy. Coming back in the evenings was great knowing we had a heavenly queen size bed to rest on. Dishes, towels, and linens were all top notch. Room decor was quaint and specific to the area. Would most definetly want to use again if going back to the area. Lead in itself is a very charming town with a reasonalbly priced grocery store.

Great location

Guest: Wayne (Crossroads, TX)
Date of Stay: 06/22/10 Review Submitted: 07/06/10

Excellent location for a "home base" for seeing all of the sights in the area. We spent an entire week seeing sights in the surrounding area that most people wouldn't see in three vacations. The property was very comfortable and had everything we needed. You can walk right in and feel like you are at home. All you need to bring is food. The owner is very courteous and easy to work with. We would definitely stay there again and have even told our friends about it.
