This is an excellent place to stay and we had a great time in a 'home' situation. I would have no doubt in recommending it to all travellers to Athens..... DRJ, London We LOVED the apartment - it was great and everything that you said that it was. The location was perfect, etc and we would really enjoy visiting, again. T. Wood, Atlanta, GA The apartment was everything the web site describes. Light, roomy, and comfortable, fully appointed with all the comforts of home. On a quiet residential side street, you will feel like you are living in Athens, not just visiting. And the veranda is a perfect place to relax outdoors after a long day seeing the city. What's more, Carole provides great suggestions for restaurants and markets which you won't find on your own. A class (or two) above any other Athens apartment we were able to find on the web. Don't miss it! Andrew Fisher, Atlanta, GeorgiaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 11/18

My parents, my wife and I spent four days in this centrally located apartment that was easy walking distance to the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, the Plaka, the Olympic Stadium and many other sites. There was a market and several restaurants along with several newspaper stands within two blocks of the apartment. The apartment was very clean and with two levels, there was plenty of room to spread out. And of course there is access to the rooftop deck with a fantastic view of the Acropolis. The availability of laundry, especially towards the end of a two weeks spent throughout Greece, was greatly appreciated. I would recommend this apartment to anyone looking to spend time in the heart of Athens. If/when we come back we will stay here. I should add that Carole can provide access to a tour company that can provide day trips outside of Athens. We had arranged a day trip to Corinth, Nafplios and Mycenae that was so good, we set up a sunset trip to the Temple of Poseidon the next evening. Each trip the driver set us up at fantastic restaurants. I can't recommend these tours enough. Thanks for everything Carole.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Walking into the apartment, we immediately knew this would be our oasis in the city. And how right we were - a cool, calm space walking distance to shops, restaurants, cafe's, bakeries, taxi's, buses. We love being able to "go local"in a foreign city, and with Carole's thorough information booklet and blog, the location of her apartment and the recommendation of Nick as a guide, we really could relax into this incredible city. Our aim was to see and do as much as possible while enjoying down-time as a family, and I think the spacious apartment accommodation in a central location provided exactly the refuge we needed to retreat to after hot, busy days of sightseeing. From the first email, to what I hope won't be the last, Carole has been an ever-flowing source of help and kindness, with a real understanding of what it means to be a stranger in a strange land. Thank you so much for this, Carole.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

From the moment we made contact with Carole, everything was perfect: the communication, the apartment, the location, the recommendations for shopping and restaurants, her recommendation of Nick as a driver and guide. Carole truly understands hospitality, and what it means to be a traveller in a foreign country. I highly recommend Athens, the neighbourhood and the apartment - we had the most incredible holiday filled with history, food, sunshine and relaxation. We couldn't possibly ask for more, except the privilege of returning one day.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We were a party of three adults, so we found this apartment perfect for our needs. We had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy ourselves. The welcome basket was perfect and all the arrangements for airport pickup and day tours were perfect. We loved the location, close to lots of useful places and interesting things to do and see. The property was ideal, with everything we could possibly want. We're pretty self-sufficient and independent people, but Carol provided us with all the contact info we needed in case we ran into any problems. One of the highlights of our stay was watching some of the movies from the "Greek" library in the apartment in the evenings. It was terrific fun to watch "Zorba the Greek" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" while in Athens! So silly, but so fun. We got to do everything we wanted and had plenty of time to just enjoy Athens. Carol arranged day trips for us that were perfect, so we saw lots of the rest of Greece too. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this apartment and Carol to anyone wanting a little "home away from home" while in Athens. There aren't enough good things I can say about Carol or the apartment. Everything was perfect!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Athens First is the place to spend a visit in Athens. Carole & Basil have done an outstanding job making it a very comfortable "home away from home". We spent five days, using Yannis as our driver, and cannot imagine a better holiday.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The Alpha apartment is fantastic and we enjoyed the luxurious accommodations and space. Needless to say, the rooftop balcony and view is magnificent! The apartment is beautifully furnished with comfortable beds and plenty of room for a large group. It was very special for all of us to experience Easter festivities during our visit highlighted by the holiday dinner Carole arranged at a local restaurant. We felt less like tourists and more like an extended family. In my travels, the actual experience often does not match up to the expectation. However, our visit to Athens was more than we could have hoped for. Carole and Basil both helped to make our visit another great travel memory with unparalleled hospitality. We hope to return again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This apartment became our home away from home during the Iceland volcano eruption in April. We made a last-minute reservation and Carole was absolutely fabulous. This place really did feel like home...excellent through and through. All bedrooms and kitchen were great, had plenty of room to spread out, and the balcony was a favorite. Great neighborhood, everything from grocery stores to parks to restaurants to nightspots...you will feel right at home. We did!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Long before we arrived in Greece, Carole made us feel welcome. Thanks to her generous emails and extensive preparatory notes (adapted to each apartment), we had a good idea of what to expect. Then came the big surprise: our actual experience turned out even BETTER than expected. If you have read the descriptions of Carole's five apartments on VRBO, and thought to yourself, "They sound too good to be true," think again. The Heritage House apartment was exactly as described at VRBO, but its location still astonished us. The green Hill of the Pnyx was our "back yard." The green Agora site was our "front yard." We walked from the apartment to the Acropolis and to the new Acropolis Museum on a pedestrian street. We spent three days in Athens before encountering car traffic! Both the facade and the interior of Heritage House are exceptionally attractive. The owners, even more so. Babis and Xenia know better than most owners how to be welcoming and helpful, and also how to respect your privacy. We enjoyed some lively conversations and some good advice---but not one intrusion. Note that although the great classical sites are very close, the little necessities of life sit even closer: grocery store; bakery; pharmacy; ATM; etc. You are also comfortably near to the Thissio Metro station and to numerous bus lines. Restaurants and cafes are also present in abundance, but we rarely visited them, as it was so very pleasant to enjoy a meal or a drink on our own little open-air "terrace" above the back garden. We have been to Greece multiple times, but we had no idea that living in Athens could be so agreeable and peaceful and green. Did I mention the great beds; the spacious shower; the excellent wi-fi; the appliances that all work perfectly? Unless you are deeply devoted to hotel-type services, we doubt you could find a better accommodation anywhere in Greece than in one of Carole's splendid apartments.Did you find this review helpful? About the owner: Who would have thought when I boarded a plane for Greece more than 20 years ago, planning on backpacking through the mountains and then heading north through then Yugoslavia I'd end up making Greece my second home? But here I am, 20 something years later, running a fabulous Greek vacation rental business with historic homes & penthouses in Athens and traditional Cycladic homes on the island of Tinos, planning Greek travel itineraries and leading small group tours around my adopted homeland and loving the life that I am lucky enough to be living. Of course I did pick up an equally crazy, workaholic Greek husband along the way, as well as a stray Greek animal or two!
Why the Owner Chose Nea Smyrni:
Although I traveled around Greece for many years, after Basil and I married we started spending more time in Athens - usually staying with his mother. But I wanted a little pied a terre to call my own, and while spending a few months alone in Athens studying Greek I came to know the Pagrati Mets area, which I fell in love with. It's the perfect Athens neighborhood, full of squares (platieas), friendly locals, an outdoor farmers market three times a week - all within walking distance of the historic center and the best museums in Athens!
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
When Basil and I started looking for a place to call our own in Athens, I'd lived and rented enough Athens apartments to have some ground rules:
1. It must be walking distance (no more than 10 -20 min) to the Acropolis, Syntagma, Kolonaki & the museums.
2. It must have outdoor living space.
3. It must have a view that screams ATHENS. Of course an Acropolis view was first on my list, but the beautiful Cycladic St George church atop Lykavittos Hill is very beautiful as well - so either would do (and both would be smashing!)
4. Not many Americans know about the 'fotagogo' or air shaft that runs through most Athens apartment buildings. It is designed to air out the bathroom and/or kitchen, but also means that you have an early morning symphony from all of the units in your building ... not something I was willing to get used to (I guess I'm a bit of a spoiled American girl deep down)
5. Acceptable paper disposal after use. Yes, more of my spoiled nature came out when I started living 'local' in Athens and discovered that little sign in the bathroom: PLEASE DO NOT THROW PAPER IN THE TOILET (sometimes translated as: Please do not throw paper AT the toilet ....) Regardless, I needed to be able to flush my used paper ... and so, all of our homes offer the unique benefit of being able to flush it down!
