We (a family of four from Germany) spent a week in the Olive Tree Cottage at the end of October and we enjoyed our stay very much. It was simply pleasant and relaxing. The cottage is lovely furnished and very well equipped – we didn’t miss anything. The pool is surrounded by olive trees and lavender and offers a wonderful view to the Montagne Noire. The Canal du midi with the lock in front of the house creates a special atmosphere of tranquillity and we liked watching the boats when they passed through the lock. We also took the way along the canal to stroll to the bakery in the morning. The location of the Olive Tree Cottage is perfect for excursions as well as for relaxing. Marseillette is conveniently situated so that you can reach the Mediterranean Sea in less than an hour, Carcassonne is a 20 minutes drive and there are lots of other sights to see in the region. The dossier and all the leaflets compiled by Pauline were very useful for us to plan our day trips. We visited the Cité of Carcassonne, the Cathar castles Quéribus and Peyrepertuse, the village of Lagrasse with its Benedictine abbey and we went to Leucate Plage on the Mediterranean. We liked it all very much but were especially taken with the Cathar castles and the Pyrenees. The surrounding landscape with the Canal du midi and all the vineyards is ideally suited for talking a walk (or cycling if you have a bike). In any case we found our walks very relaxing and enjoyed making „only a small programme“ on some days. Last but not least Pauline and Ken with their kindness and helpfulness contributed much to the fact that we felt entirely at ease in Marseillette. We can definitely recommend making a holiday there! Elke & Michael and kidsOwner response: Thank you for taking the time to write your interesting and flattering review. We are glad you enjoyed yourselves and only sorry that you were not able to stay for longer, maybe next time? You managed to visit more places in one week than most people do in a fortnights stay! We wish you all the best for 2013 and hope to see you again in the future and maybe do a bit of wine tasting together. Regards to all

As it says in the opening line of the 'Tips for Writing reviews', choosing the perfect place can be tough. After many hours spent trawling various websites and properties in the Languedoc region of France we opted for Pauline and Ken's gite in Marseillette. This property appealed because of its quiet location, yet was within walking distance of an essential boulangerie. The pool was private and sizeable and there was plenty of outdoor space for our two children (aged 4 and 7) to play. The gite was also within 30 minutes of various local attractions including Carcassonne and the beaches along the coast. On arrival, the gite exceeded our expectations. It was exactly as the photographs depicted, very clean and well maintained. Pauline and Ken were excellent hosts, there on arrival to greet us and a valuable source of local information, but respectful of our privacy. Beach towels were provided free of charge, which lessens the load if flying. Pleasant surprises included the lovely family who were staying in the adjoining gite. The way the gites have been planned allows for maximum privacy, one at the front and the other at the back of the property. The Canal du Midi also proved entertaining viewing and quiet cycle tracks for our family. The village was peaceful and the locals friendly and warm. The weather was glorious and even though temperatures reached 35 some days, there was no need for air-conditioning as the gites had shutters and felt very airy. Our favourite day trips included the Lac du Caveyene, or Carcassonne plage and Carcassonne cite. We would also recommend Minerve and evening meals at the local village of Trebes, which also had useful supermarkets and petrol stations. St Pierre sur Mer was a lovely beach too. So, if you're looking for a relaxing location for a peaceful holiday choose this property but book ahead of time as it fills up fast!Owner response: Glad you really enjoyed your holiday here and it re-affirms our decision to move to this location nearly 10 years ago. It was great to have you stay. Enjoy the rest of the British summer and we hope to see you again in the future. Regards to you all Ken & Pauline

We have just returned from a superb holiday staying at Olive Tree Cottage. The accommodation was fantastic and definitely exceeded our expectations. The location couldn't be better with the gite being situated next to the lock on the beautiful Canal du Midi. It was great being able to step out from the gite and walk along the canal tow-path. The medieval city of Carcassonne is within a short drive and we spent several afternoons wandering around the narrow cobbled streets looking in the delightful shops, stopping for coffee and cakes. The gite itself is well equipped and in immaculate condition. The swimming pool, table tennis and BBQ all made our stay all the more enjoyable. Pauline & Ken were excellent hosts - attentive but not intrusive; the perfect hosts. They provided excellent advice on local attractions and activities - along with a map when we lost ours! I would happily recommend this property to all my family and friends and we would certainly stay here again.Owner response: It was great to have you stay and appreciate your kind review. Glad the cot and changing mat worked well for you. Hope to see you again next year when Alex is running around more and chasing the dogs for entertainment !!

Canal Cottage was a truly unique location. Overlooking the Midi Canal, meant that there was always something "going on" at the front of the cottage. The antics of the inexperienced boat users was fun to watch, and it was fun to help them out on occasions - they were always appreciative. Its aspect (facing North) gave us the benefit of a breathtaking view (yes really) of the Montagne Noire in the distant background beyond the canal. The mountain range did not impinge, it was an outstanding backdrop in the distance, giving a majesty to the environment. The sun arrived in the front in the early afternoon, so we were not deprived. The surrounding area had many attractions, including chateaux, restaurants, walks, cycling, Narbonne beach (excellent) and pretty villages and towns steeped in local Cathar history. Carcassonne is an absolute must, particularly for the Inner City and every type of restaurant. The description was accurate, and if anything, not descriptive enough to address the grandeur. It's a "big sky" place, a bit like some American Mid-Western locations. Very, very good swimming pool. The back-up from the owners was helpful when asked for (only one occasion). They were professional and charming when we met. A very genuine couple. Would we recommend Canal Cottage to others? Unhesitatingly YES.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for this great review and it was an absolute pleasure to have you here. We're glad you enjoyed the location and facilities and also Brian, the cycling. Kens looking forward to you accompanying him next year to the Pic de Nord!! Hopefully see you next year.

Have just spent a wonderful week at Olive Tree Cottage and wished it didnt have to come to an end. The location is perfect for sightseeing the beautiful surrounding regions or for just chilling out and relaxing. The gite itself has everything that you could possibly need and it is so homely you really do not want for anything. The grounds are perfectly secure for young children to run around in and the heated pool and table tennis table were the main attractions for our two boys who loved them. Ken & Pauline are close by if you need them but not at all intrusive. It really is a little piece of heaven and we cant wait to go back. Thanks so much Ken & Pauline- we hope to see you soon.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks for the great review and it was a pleasure to have you all stay. I know the boys were sorry to leave the pool behind but sure you would have had a fab time in Disneyland after leaving us. Hopefully you can make it down here another year so you can continue to explore this lovely region you like so much. Take care and don't work too hard!! A bientot.
