Great Winter Sport & Xmas markets in Dec: Not only will you find beautiful skiing slopes all around (4 ski areas with plenty of slopes), there are also short as well as up to 5 kilometres long toboggan runs. You can rent a toboggan at the mountain hut/station.
Another popular winter activity is snow shoe hiking and ice-skating, ice hockey playing or simply walking on ice on one of the 6 lakes around us.
The Christmas market in the historic market town of Fuessen (lovely 20 min walk from Birkeneck along the river Lech) is taking place on the first and third weekend of December. The smaller culinary Christmas market of Schwangau village will take place on the first Sunday in December with many more musical events throughout the season.

Fabulous skiing. There are ten skiing areas around us. The closest slopes are right in our village, only 5 minutes from the house: Tegelberg wintersport arena. You will find 4 lifts and even more slopes, some of which are flood lit for night skiing and articifically snowed upon to allow skiing even when mother nature doesn't provide the perfect conditions.
There are excellent nordic skiing trails including one 2km long flood lit trail right under castle Neuschwanstein.

We enjoyed our stay here so much. We stayed in the lower floor of the house and it has been beautifully renovated and updated with every modern convenience. The house is large, quiet, very comfortable and has a great view of the castles from both the living and dining area as well as out on the deck. The bed was comfortable and there is even a massage chair in the bedroom! Birkeneck has all the conveniences and more in both the kitchen and bathroom, complete with nice fluffy towels. There was even a washer and a real dryer in the basement that we could use. The manager, Cornelia, was wonderful and spent a lot of time giving us suggestions on places to visit, eat, etc. She has put together a wonderful reference and resource guide for guests. She was very responsive to any questions or needs we had. This was one of our favorite places we stayed in Europe and we hope to return again soon! Thanks, Cornelia!Did you find this review helpful? Just returned from a wonderful 9 night stay at Birkeneck luxury apartments. We were a family of 5 and had rented the ground floor and the first floor apartments. Both of the apartments were beautifully furnished and had everything you would need for a relaxing holiday. The ground floor apartment also had access to a lovely patio area with table and chairs and sun loungers. The views of the surrounding area and castles were stunning, especially at night when the castles were lit up. There was also a massage chair in the bedroom which was wonderful after a busy day out and about! The first floor apartment had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and also had a large balcony running the lenght of the apartment. The balcony had table and chairs so you could sit and enjoy the views. When we arrived at Birkeneck we were met by the manager Cornelia who explained all the details about the apartments and the sorrounding area. There was also a file in the apartment of recommendations of where to eat and also the many walks available to you. There was so much to do within the area of Fussen and Schwangau. We hired bikes for the week as there were some great biking trails around the lakes. The lakes were also lovely for taking a swim. As well as the 2 castles on your doorstep there was also the Tegelberg mountain and cable car and the summer luge. A five minuite walk also took you to the crystale therme spa which was lovely. Wir mieteten die EG-Wohnung im Haus Birkeneck für drei Wochen. Das Haus ist ruhig gelegen und von Sonnendeck und Garten hat man einen wunderschönen Blick auf die Königsschlösser. Für Unternehmungen jeglicher Art ist es der ideale Ausgangspunkt. Die Wohnung ist gut ausgestattet – besonders die Kücheneinrichtung ist ganz einzigartig. Es empfiehlt sich, die Wohnung nur für zwei Personen anzumieten, da neben einem Schlafzimmer nur noch eine offen gelegene Nische mit Schlafcouch besteht. Besonders hervorheben möchten wir die freundliche und professionelle Betreuung vor Ort, die uns jederzeit zur Verfügung stand und keine Mühen scheute, behilflich zu sein, wenn es einmal Fragen gab. Wir (Familie mit 2 Kindern; 5 u 7 Jahre alt) haben uns in der Ferienwohnung ausgesprochen wohl gefühlt. Es hat alles gestimmt. Besonders haben wir das Frühstück auf der Terrasse mit den unverbauten Blick auf Schloss Neuschwanstein genossen. Die Lage ist perfekt für Ausflüge etwa in die Berge, zu den umliegenden Seen, in das nette Städtchen Füssen oder auch zur nahegelegenen Therme. Die Vermieterin ist sehr nett, sehr gut telefonisch erreichbar und informiert über die umliegenden Ausflugsmöglichkeiten. Sehr nett war auch ihr Service, uns unsere Sachen per Post zuzuschicken, die wir vergessen hatten.
