"Merriweather" is located 30 feet from the water's edge with a greenspace that offers lots of natural privacy and attracts an assortment of birds. The lakefront area features a hard sand bottom with shallow water for wading and swimming.

A 75-foot aluminum dock has two 8-foot by 10-foot platforms - one at each end of the dock - which are great for viewing and participating in lake activities. Use of a 14-foot aluminum rowboat, canoe, kayak, oars and life preservers is included.

Sleeping areas, each with a full bath with a tub and/or shower, are on three levels of living. The master bedroom on the main level has a king bed and an ensuite bathroom. The upstairs level has one bedroom with a queen bed and trundle beds, and a separate loft with a double-sized futon. The upstairs level bedroom and loft share a bathroom with a shower. The basement has a bedroom with a queen bed and twin bunks. A bonus room in the walk-out basement has two twin beds, a sofa, and a kitchen table and chairs. The two rooms share a full bath.

The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen with snack bar. The open great room and dining room have sliding glass doors leading to the wrap-around deck which faces the lake.

Nestled across from rolling hills and cherry orchards (prime hiking areas), Merriweather is located within three miles of two public boat launches.

A short drive away are casinos, Lake Michigan, public beaches, the Crystal River, Sleeping Bear National Dunes, golf courses, excellent restaurants, shopping, wineries, art galleries, and Interlochen Arts Academy. Year Purchased: 1996

Why the Owner Chose Lake Leelanau

We love the Leelanau Peninsula! Where else are there hills and lakes, towns and farms, art festivals and Walleye contests, all in one location? A favorable climate, crystal clear lakes and streams, and great shopping in quaint harbor towns are what drew us to the peninsula in the first place. The variety of available activities far exceeds any other vacation area of its type. We bought on the Leelanau Peninsula because it's laid-back enough to get away from it all, yet close enough to civilization to enjoy fine restaurants, excellent wines and world-class concerts. The Cherry Capital Airport has daily jet service to many large cities.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Merriweather features sunrise views and shaded midday and evening relaxation. With its manicured lawn areas, as well as wild green spaces, it offers privacy for guests and a haven for a variety of birds. Great hiking opportunities are available across the street in the cherry orchards and the seasonal wooded roads. One of our favorite family activities is driving to Glen Arbor where we spend the afternoon climbing the Sleeping Bear Dunes, driving along the Pierce Stocking Drive, and looking out at Lake Michigan from a 450-foot high dune. We then shop at the Cherry Republic (retail store specializing in cherry-related products), eat dinner at the Boone Docks, and watch the sunset over Lake Michigan.

Owner's Map of Lake Leelanau

We are retired educators who married 31 years ago and combined two households. We stored our extra pots, pans and dishes, hoping to get a cottage "someday". That "someday" came less than one year later, when we bought our first cottage in downstate Michigan. After many wonderful summers with our children there, we started vacationing on Lake Leelanau and bought our property in 1996. Our children are grown now, with children of their own, but they still find time to vacation with us at Merriweather. We hope your family chooses to create Merriweather memories of their own.

We absolutely loved the house. It is perfect for our families. Lake Leelanau is the best. I have been coming up here since I was a child, now for several years I have been bringing my family. We love it!

It was a very accommodating house. You did an excellent job of having the house clean between guests. Your extra big dock and shallow sandy area was fun for the kids to throw Frisbee and play ball. The deck was great to eat out on while enjoying the view of the lake. Of all the houses/cottages we have rented over the years, you all have been the most hospitable. Thank you for your kindness! Your wine and Cherry Republic gift was a nice added touch.
