These lovely apartments are situated in a wide-built 19th C 'maison de maitre' shaded by towering plane trees within the heart of this sunny southern town with its narrow lanes and pretty squares. Great care has been given to make sure that both flats are well provided, comfortable and attractive. And, although so central, the house is situated in a quiet area only a few moments away from good bakeries, small shops, cafes, restaurants and charming bars - some open till the small hours. Saturday mornings sees the bustle of the colourful local market in the streets around. Stunning country walks just a couple of minutes away and a local lake for swimming a few minutes by car. Find out more about the town, please see the Ceret Tourist Information website: most helpful and well illustrated.

SPAIN: The Spanish border is about 15 minutes motorway drive from Ceret, and just over it lies the border town of La Jonquera - the spot where truck drivers stop to have amazing lunches for next to nothing (and its the place to stock up on food at Spanish prices!). Between the border and Barcelona (about 2 hours away) stretches the Costa Brava, with many charming small bays, as well as the larger well known (and less attractive!) resorts. Particularly of note is Dali's home in the fishing village of Cadeques, and Empuries with its Greek and Roman archaeological sites and the prettiest little beaches imaginable. Inland, Girona is a lovely town with a beautiful old quarter and good shopping. Besalu is a stunning medieval jewel of a town with an amzing bridge spanning a ravine. Figueres has the fantastic Dali museum. Spanish wine, tapas, and of course, endless pottery!

Walking: Wonderful guided walks all year round organised by an experienced, charming and informative local guide will take you to places you may never get to on your own - into the mountains, by the sea or over the border into Spain. Some are half-day, and are graded from easy to 'sportif'. There are also full day walks, and even one to see the sun rise from the top of Canigou (local mountain). The weather is usually fabulous for walking through autumn, winter and spring, and, in summer, the heat is avoided by walking high in the mountains.

For those who prefer to plan their own walks, the area is outstanding and the local tourist office has a good guide leaflet for local walks!

1st Floor Flat: Ceret Vacation Rental by Owner Listing 53251ha

On the 1st floor of a 'Maison de Maitre', this apartment offers space and a traditional feel. The sitting room to the front of the building has a high moulded ceiling, large open fireplace and two sets of French windows onto decorative balconies over looking the tree-lined street. There are double doors into the dining room/kitchen, which is similar in feel and again has French windows. Both rooms are sunny in winter and shaded in summer when trees are in leaf. The bedrooms are situated quietly to the rear with a balcony running across the back of the house, overlooking the garden. The bathroom houses the laundry area, and is a good size. There is also a 'cabinet de toilette' en suite with the double bedroom. The floors throughout the flat are tiled with 'tommes Catalanes' traditional hexagonal earthenware tiles. The furniture is country French style. This is a place that feels cosy and secure if one wants to stay in, but is at the heart of everything whenever one wants to venture out.

18/10/05 V P (UK): We loved the apartment - it has style and a feeling of light and space. Its location is excellent being so close to the centre of town but also just around the corner are the beautiful hills and the wonderful views. 10/04/06 P P(UK): We really enjoyed our week in Céret: the immediate surrounding area was lovely and the town itself charming with everything we needed. The flat was spotless and well equipped and we will certainly recommend the flat and Céret to family and friends. 02/11/06 P M (Australia): Thanks again for the use of your lovely townhouse and for your hospitality. We had a great time in Ceret and will recommend your apartment to others. 24/04/07 DD (Canada): We just LOVE the flat in Ceret.....it's everything we wished for. You've done a beautiful job of decorating, the patio garden is in bloom, and we want for nothing! We've been exploring the region ever since, it's just breathtaking. We wondered if we could extend our stay for 2 more nights?

We spent a week in June 2011 in this extremely well equipped apartment. I can't praise the owner, Wendy highly enough, she seems to have thought about everything you could possibly need. The description is accurate and there is plenty of good information/ideas for your days out. There was even a book on butterflies so we could identify the ones we had seen on our travels. Travelling into Spain was so easy, we spent three of our days there, one in Girona, one at the Dali Museum and another at the Greek\Roman ruins of Empuries. There is just so much to do in the area a week will barely scratch the surface, so I guess we will have to return. The only thing we really struggled with was the opening hours. Coming from London we really are used to a 24hr culture so to find things closed between noon and 2.00pm was a bit of a shock for us. We have already recommended this apartment to several friends, although we need to be careful as we don't want it fully booked and find ourselves unable to visit again! We would also say the apartment is exceptional value for money. We went on to another (considerably more expensive) property near Carcasonne, who didn't even supply a cool box and neglected to say anything about the property being on an extremely busy road. I hasten to add it wasn't a property from this site. To anyone considering this property, I really don't think you'll be disappointed. I know I felt sad when it came to leave and I wished I had booked us here for at least 2 weeks. Thank you once again Wendy. Anne & Mike

We were very happy with our 1st floor flat rental. Never having done this before we were a bit unsure what to expect but yes it does look just like the pictures! Wendy the owner is easy to get in touch with, has provided everything you could possibly need and if you do have a problem the "managers" are close by. We also liked the convenience of paying using "pay pal". March was a bit cool (there are electric heaters in all the rooms) but when the sun came out and you opened up all the windows it was lovely. Watching the activity of the Saturday morning market out the kitchen window was wonderful. It is easy to enjoy a week in Ceret. It is a convenient location for day trips to many historical sites and the Mediterranean.

Beautiful flat with a gorgeous location near to the centre of Ceret. Flat is modern and well-equipped with thoughtful touches such as 2 warning triangles to borrow if you want to visit Spain. The incredibly peaceful balcony was a haven with small children and has a lovely view. Owner very thorough and helpful. New bathroom was beautiful and our 2 year old loved the walk in shower. Flat was well-equipped and thankfully very cool compared to the August heat. The area is stunning- mountains, waterfalls and natural lakes abound. My 8 year old loved 'swimming with the fishes' in Collioure. We will definitely be going back!

We had a wonderful holiday in Ceret, staying in the first floor apartment. The apartment was lovely - comfortable, clean, very well-equipped and elegantly and charmingly furnished. There were also shelves full of books, CDs and CD player, and info and maps for the surrounding area. The balcony overlooking the garden was great for breakfasts in the sun. It's in a very quiet, attractive and central part of the town. The owner supplied us lots of info before we went, including some great suggestions for days out and local walks, and recommendations for local restaurants and shops. Ceret was a fantastic base - close to Spain, close to the coast and in the foothills of the mountains. We went at the end of March and the weather was superb. The town is renowned for its cherries and we were lucky enough to be there while the cherry blossom was out - a wonderful backdrop for the views of the snow-peaked mountain Canigou. The town is also renowned for its connections with some of the great artists of the twentieth century, and Ceret's Musuem of Modern Art was a wonderful way to spend half a day. Other highlights included hiking in the hills in the same valley as Ceret, visiting the Dali Musuem in Figueres (40 minutes away in Spain) and a day in the stunning harbour town of Collioure, which inspired Picasso, Braque and Matisse among others. There was so much to do and see, we would have loved to have stayed longer and will definitely return.

This flat is right at the centre of a lively and enchanting town with a mix of France and Catalonia. Wonderful restaurants are close by and further afield, lakes to swim in, the coast and great walks in the mountains. The flat itself is very easy to feel comfortable in; we stayed there with a ten and thirteen-year-old and all of us loved it. Without hesitation I would recommend this town and this flat to those who like being at the heart of a vibrant town that has many tourists, but does not rely on them. We have vowed to return.

                                  Year Purchased: 2002

About the owner: I am Londoner, a semi-retired professional property manager and lettings agent, with a grown up family and the recent arrival of 2 grandchildren.

                                  Why the Owner Chose Ceret:
Having traveled extensively through France during various vacations, and being a Francophile, I happened upon Ceret one summer and loved the place. Having done all the wrong things: i.e. no research, no checking other properties, etc, I bought the 1st floor flat in a matter of weeks! I bought the ground floor (a total wreck) subsequently.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The 1st floor flat has such lovely proportions and a really 'French' feel and I love standing by the French windows watching the passers by, or, in winter particularly, sitting in a pool of sunlight with a book! The ground floor flat, which is more contemporary is cool in summer and snug in winter. The garden and its shady terrace is a huge asset in the summer.
