The Barn at Burrs Crossing is a two bedroom converted 1760s Dutch Barn, located on 14 acres on a private road 90 minutes north of New York City. Relax by the wood burning stove or pursue any number of outdoor adventures right from your doorstep!
The two bedroom loft architecture features exposed hand-hewn original beams throughout. All of the furniture is modern and comfortable - there are plenty of places to curl up and relax.
A large and sunny, fully equipped kitchen and dining area occupy the first floor, along with a utility room with washer and dryer, and full bath with flagstone shower.
The second floor features a dramatic cathedral-ceiling living area, which includes a wood burning stove, a reading/sleeping nook (with full futon), and a TV/VCR and stereo. There are two loft bedrooms on the third floor, one with a small deck, and another full bath with tub.
There are several miles of trails for hiking/biking/skiing right on the property, and we are within 15 minutes of both Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park for rock climbing, hiking, biking, swimming, or cross country skiing. There are also several good kayaking rivers nearby, either for flatwater or whitewater - and if you are a trout fisherperson the Esopus is supposed to be one of the best! Many of the Catskills trailheads are within 25 minutes from here, and we'd be happy to recommend some excellent hikes to viewpoints. Hunter, Bellayre, and Wyndham downhill ski areas are approximately a 45 minute drive as well.
In the summer, we can also direct you to a couple of wonderful local swimming holes to cool off after whatever you decide to do.
If you prefer less strenuous pursuits, there are several small towns within ten miles that offer fine dining choices, art galleries to browse, crafts and local product shopping, and antiques. The FDR and Vanderbilt mansions are open year round for those interested in history, as are the DIA: Beacon art gallery and the town of Woodstock - and all are under 45 minutes away. The Hudson Valley Wine trail starts seven miles away in New Paltz, and there are about a dozen vineyard that offer tours and tastings along its length. There are also sailing and cruising tours on the Hudson River available from Kingston (ten miles north) in the warmer months.
The kitchen is well equipped and our local markets have excellent locally grown produce - or if you prefer to eat out there are several excellent restaurants within a few minutes from the house, and the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) is half an hour away in Poughkeepsie.
The barn overlooks a small pond and several acres of fields, and there are several Adirondack chairs as well as a large picnic table by the pond for you to use, as well as a gas grill on the bluestone patio for outdoor cooking and entertaining.
Deer come to visit us most afternoons, and you may spot our blue heron out by the pond early in the mornings. Other "critters" we see occasionally include coyote, fox, and red-tail hawks.
The property is located on a private road so it is very quiet here, even though we are quite close to several towns.
