One of life's nicest experiences is to share good times and great places with friends and family. Our 2600-square-foot "Alpine House" in the beautiful San Juan mountain range of the Colorado Rockies is the perfect place to do just that. It is roomy, sleeps eight in a wonderful wooded location near Durango, within walking distance to beautiful Electra Lake, and 12 minutes to Durango Mountain Ski and Summer Resort.
This is not a crowded condominium complex or impersonal high rise: just a lovely mountain home whose backyard views of the woods and mountains will assure you that you are truly in the mountains.
The floor-to-ceiling windows off the living room, dining room, and kitchen will entrance you. In the summer, barbecue or lounge on one of the decks and watch the wildlife or just enjoy the gentle breeze through the aspens and pines. The temperatures in the summer are perfect - 70s to 80s - with wonderful cool mountain nights and very little humidity. In the winter watching the snow fill those woods as you snuggle in front of the crackling fire in the real wood fireplace is magical.
The large, gourmet kitchen with granite counter tops, top-of-the-line appliances, double ovens (one is convection) is a cook's dream. The kitchen nook also looks out to the woods and has a unique table that can be used for meals or flip the top and you have a game table with built-in checkers, chess, etc. boards. The formal dining room with French doors out to the deck offers a comfortable and rustic elegance to your meals. Morning coffee or evening meals on these decks is glorious.
You will wake up looking at the mountains from the master bedroom with a king-size bed, beautiful hand-carved wood furniture, and a luxurious attached master bath with oversized tub and walk-in shower.
The second bedroom (with queen-size bed) also has beautiful outdoor views. New mattresses throughout the home ensure a great night's sleep.
The very large, third "bedroom/bonus" room has a set of twin beds but also a TV lounge area with a sectional sofa that provides another convertible double-size bed. This is almost a small living area in itself and is a perfect place for the kids to enjoy their own area while the adults relax in the living room. A large "office area" in this room is a great place to stay connected with the office (if you must!).
What a treat to store your skis or get into your vehicle from the three-bay, heated garage. There is plenty of room for bikes, kayaks, or whatever "toys" you choose to bring for your winter or summer Colorado vacation.
Hike out your back door to one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southwest. Electra Lake is a pristine mountain lake with a backdrop of near 14,000-foot mountains. It is a breathtaking place to fish, hike, boat, or just enjoy dinner at the wonderful old boathouse restaurant right on the the lake.
Just 12 minutes away is the Durango Mountain Ski/Summer Resort where you will find every winter outdoor activity you could desire. In the summer, the mountains are magical with music festivals, alpine slides, waterfalls, wildflowers, mountain biking, hiking, jeeping, white-water rafting, etc.
Historic Durango is only a 25-minute drive where you can spend days shopping, dining, or just strolling the streets of this beautiful old mountain town. This is the place to catch the famous Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a breathtaking ride to the mining town of Silverton. You can do some white-water rafting on the Animas River that runs right through town. The incredible Mesa Verde National Park, home to the "Cliff Dwellers," is a must see.
