Champagne Cove - a Great Winter Getaway for the Whole Family!

Year Purchased: 2002

Why the Owner Chose Kapoho

We choose Kapoho because we were told it is located in a "banana belt" on the Hilo side, which means we have sun often when it is raining in Hilo. We bought Champagne Cove because of the 180-degree oceanfront views and the huge swimming pool with the lava rock fountain that frames the Pacific Ocean.

Of course, the hot ponds with the large turtles and the ability to have a house where you can watch the cruise ships pass in the night through the palm trees was a huge draw.

Nothing compares with the old Hawaii feeling in downtown Hilo and great kindness reflected by the neighbors and the natives of this lush area. Being only a few miles from Kalapana and being able to see the lava enter the ocean is another wonderful attraction to the area. Our house is located less than a mile from the old town of Kapoho and the lighthouse on the point reminds us of times gone by.

We look forward to retiring to our dream home in a few years but for now paradise can be rented!

The Unique Benefits at this House

This beautiful 2-story home looks out at the ocean with 180-degree sweeping views of the Pacific. The ocean is complemented with a view that includes the 9-foot deep pool with two shallow areas for children. The outdoor barbecue faces the pool and is adjacent to the outdoor shower that is a must for everyone to try at least once.

In the pool you can view the waterfall and the 12-foot mural of “Hilo Town” at the same time. If your stay includes a Thursday look for our artist “Arenzo” who is also our gardener and ask him about his work and his life; it is worth the wait.

Cook in our beautiful kitchens while you gaze at the Pacific Ocean through our 30-plus palm trees. At night you can view the cruise ships passing in the night or enjoy some television in one of four locations in the house. You are “connected” while at Champagne Cove through both hard-wired and wireless DSL connections.

We have a local massage therapist “on call” and we have our own table for your use. Swim in Champagne Pond and enjoy ocean fishing or swimming just steps from our door.

Don’t miss the 2-mile drive to the public hot ponds and after dipping continue on your way to Kalapana for 5-o’clock walk to the lava flow. Remember to bring good shoes, a flashlight, some water and a camera. Bring a wee bit of cash and talk to the artists in their tents that line the parking lot on the way to the lava flow.

In the evening go to Pahoa town and stop at Kaleo’s for dinner. Many nights there is live music but every night there is great food and a wonderful bar and the warm air is filled with aloha.

Champagne Cove is your home base while you explore these and other wonders in Hawaii. You are in the real Hawaii now and we welcome you with Aloha to our home.

Summer Vacation

Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 08/26/11

My family visited Hilo, Hawaii at the end of June 2011 and we stayed at Champage Cove for 7 days. The pictures don't do the house justice. The home is situated in a gated community with tidal pools all around and the Pacific Ocean a hop, skip and jump from house. The home is very clean and neat. We loved the feeling of being in a home with all the amenities and a private pool. It was very quiet and peaceful. At night, there is a wonderful breeze that comes through the house and the sound of the ocean makes sleeping wonderful. The house is perfectly situated for those who are into hiking and biking. There is a lagoon within 3 miles of the property and the water, at the lagoon, is very warm. It's not far from the city of Hilo and about 45 minutes from Volcano National Park. The agency we rented from has a great staff of people that are always willing to answer your questions and provide assistance as needed. Don't forget to visit the Macademia Nut factory and the Chocolate factory in Hilo. The only negative is the price of food on the island. If you are coming from the US mainland be prepared to have sticker shock on the food items purchased from a grocery store. We will go back to this exact location again. It's worth the visit!

We just returned from Hawaii and loved staying at your house! Snorkeling in the cove right up the street was the highlight for me. Crystal clear water with hundreds of aquarium sized fish. We also snorkeled with bigger fish at the near by tidepools. The house was clean and so well appointed! My husband is a chef and made us some fabulous meals. He appreciated all the kitchen supplies and even spices there waiting for us. I enoyed looking through the book shelves and the great mattress. The view was fantastic. The ocean turned different colors every hour and we especially loved the deep royal blues around 3. We used the pool day and night and the kids were always finding something fun to do in the yard. We openned up the lower level for a couple of nights as our 3 friends who live locally thought it was so pretty they wanted to come and stay! I haven't enjoyed seeing the sunrise over the ocean since I lived in Florida, and that combined with all the coconut palms and the quiet streets made me feel so at home. We visited the volcano and lava tube at the national park for a fun day and explored Hilo and the waterfalls but otherwise it was really hard getting out of the house and champagn pond because they had everything we had come for! Thank you for a wonderful trip!

Champagne Cove Review

Guest: Sam201 (Calgary, Alberta, Canada)
Date of Stay: 03/20/09 Review Submitted: 03/23/09

Kitchen is infested with cockroaches. Not just 1 or 2, but a major infestaion. There are traps set out for the little critters but this is a preventative measure in case one strays into the property not a means of mitigating a major infestation. Management responded as though this is normal and to be expected. Luckily we only booked for 3 days.

Owner response:We take pest control at all our properties very seriously. Champagne Cove has regular pest control treatments and the most recent occurred about 10 days before these guests arrived. We are very sorry to hear that the guests thought we responded as if this were normal. They called us on a Friday evening and we immediately scheduled our housekeepers to come on Saturday to place traps and spray throughout the kitchen area. We recognized that this was a temporary measure for the weekend until the professional pest control company could come out on Monday. Because this problem was so unusual, on Monday morning the owner of our company personally visited the home to meet with the guests, see the problem so he could provide accurate information to the pest control company, and offer the guests a refund for what we recognized was a serious inconvenience. While he was there, the guest made several compliments about Champagne Cove, and everything else about the property except for the kitchen appeared to be satisfactory, so we were surprised to receive such a poor overall rating. We certainly did not consider the situation as something to be expected, but we did handle it normally in that we did everything we could to deal with the problem as quickly as possible. These guests had a very unusual experience at Champagne Cove and we are extremely sorry they were unable to enjoy this wonderful home like so many other guests have done.
