A uniquely open environment surrounded by lush tropical gardens and shaded by towering coconut palms, Hale Keawe is a private, gated property - located 22 miles south of Keahole-Kona Airport.
Sitting on majestic Kealakekua Bay, a national marine preserve and the site of the Captain Cook Monument, Hale Keawe offers two spacious bedrooms with lanais and private baths. It has a fully-equipped kitchen, an open-air living pavilion with dining area, a king-size bed and sitting room, a separate guest cabana with bedroom and open-air bathroom, and an additional outdoor shower. Hale Keawe is fully equipped with all the comforts of home in a five-star environment.
Meal preparation is a breeze in our open-air, fully-equipped kitchen - constructed of black lava and concrete. Enjoy your meals on beautiful, handmade furniture. The open design of the home allows you to savor the fragrant aromas of the plumeria, jasmine, gardenia, and many other indigenous flowers of the Big Island.
After a meal, retire to one of the many spacious lanais overlooking the bay, where you can be swept away by the calming sounds and smells of the ocean - or catch a glimpse of the spinner dolphins or breaching whales in season.
Nap in the family-size hammock or curl up with a book on the bamboo chaise. No matter where you choose to lounge, you will be treated to ocean views, exotic birds, fresh fragrant air, and comfortable furnishings.
Launch one of our top-of-the-line kayaks into the crystal-clear waters of historic Kealakekua Bay - the home of the ancient Hawaiian Alii (royalty). Snorkel or shore dive with schools of tropical fish, Manta Ray, sea turtles, and octopus. If you have never had the experience of swimming with a pod of dolphins, plan on it everyday. These mammals will entertain you with their acrobatics and friendly dispositions - and will guide you on an unforgettable tour of the bay.

This is the second time we have stayed here. I've only been home a couple of weeks and we are already yearning to go back. Its the most peaceful place I have ever been. We love the open layout of the house and how it feels like home when your there. Everything was so convenient from the Kayaks and life jackets to the extra supplies you might have forgotten at the grocery! The neighbors were so friendly, they brought us fresh fruit twice while we were there. We can't wait to go back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Mahalo, Josh! We love it when guests see this small slice of paradise as we do. Aloha to you all!

What an amazing vacation. The pictures of this house don't do it justice. We drove into Kealakekua bay from the airport, down the winding road and into the little neighborhood around Manini Beach, onto the leafy little street, and through the gates -- and we were blown away. You can't tell until you fully walk into the house, but it's like being in Thailand AND in Hawaii. The big open-air living area is fully of breezes and art, a huge comfy couch and even a 'living room bed' to curl up on with a book. We were welcomed by the house kitties, Clown, Longboard, and the kitten Laptop, and a couple of rainbow-colored geckos who stay on patrol for any stray bugs. We love the bedrooms, each with a different personality, and each as enclosed as you want it to be (we chose to leave the huge doors wide open all night, but it's easy to close them up completely). And the open air showers are wonderful. When we first arrived, we were wondered if having no walls would be a problem, but nope. The weather is perfect for the house and vice versa. We weren't bothered by any bugs (we had wondered about that too). We totally enjoyed the kitchen...a REAL kitchen, not a 'vacation rental' kitchen! Cooking for ourselves saved us lots of money, and was a big part of our experience. At this house, every meal feels like a dinner party or a picnic, and we love that. And we loved the equipment that's there to borrow! No renting kayaks for us, because the house comes with them, and even with some snorkel gear. And there's a real grill...not just an old charcoal grill with no charcoal, which is all you'll find at some other houses. We had rented a jeep thinking we would drive all over the island exploring, but Kealakekua Bay, and this house, were so magical and restful that we mostly just stuck around 'home base' and loved every second of it. The tiny private beach across the street, walking 50 steps to some of the best snorkeling we've ever done, kayaking across to Cook's memorial, walking to the little neighborhood fruit stand. The only thing we'd do differently next time? Rent a super cheap car, and stay longer. This house is a true hidden treasure, a gem full of art and fun and too many choices when it comes to 'where should I lie around and read a book this time?' It's a great place for several couples to share. If you are looking for lots of hotels and tourists, you won't like it. If you're looking for artful comfort and super-smart amenities, look no further.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Amazing house, unique location and wonderful ambiance. Whilst the house is in an isolated location the locals we meet during our morning walks were interesting and friendly. The house had an interesting mix of "creatures" - spiders that remained in the tree in their amazing web, birds that visited every morning, a mongroose that helped itself to the left over cat food, colourful geckos that provided entertainment everytime we dined in the open air. The best part was the "open air" shower with the lava wall. The fact that this house is in the cove where Captain Cook was killed, made this location even more interesting. The only down side for us was the distance to the nearest cafes and restaurants- certainly not within walking distance. A car is a must. The photos of the house were accurate of the amenities but the photos don't do it justice. The house was clean and well maintained and the garden is a delight to look out at while relaxing in the open air living space.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

From the time we entered the gates of this private compound to driving down the grassy lane on our way back to the airport we have never felt so relaxed as we did at this house. Most of the rooms have no walls allowing the ocean breezes naturally cool the rooms. There are no air conditioners to drown out the sounds of the birds chirping. At night the "geckos" like the one in the insurance commercial, scurry up the walls in the living room as Hawaiian music fills the air. Our favorite part of this place was it was steps to the water where we went kayaking everyday with dolphins jumping and spinning for us. I can see why the Hawaiian Royalty chose this bay as their home. We look forward to returning next year and many more years. We highly recommend this house if you are looking for a relaxing getaway from it all.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.
