"The Captain's Quarters" is located in the middle of Long Island at the Harbor of Grace. Beaches and ocean views can be reached within minutes either by walking, biking or driving 12 miles per hour in the courtesy golf cart available to licensed adult guests.
The house has two bedrooms upstairs - one double bed and twin beds. There is a double pullout sofa in the living room. The big country kitchen has all appliances needed - nothing fancy but everything works! Washer/dryer are available and a 4-channel TV!
A former trap-building workshop at the end of the detached garage has been converted into the rustic "Off Shore Room" with twin bed and air mattresses where one can listen to rain on the rafted roof, read or wake up to the sun pouring through a row of windows. Young visitors especially like a place to play cards, listen to their CD's or talk into the wee hours, safely separated from their elders although by just a few yards.
Guests who have enjoyed this snug year-round winterized home have expressed appreciation for "this little piece of Paradise" as it fits into their total "island experience". The place is stocked with puzzles and dated books for quiet evenings after exploring the island and learning of it's rich history prior to and during World War II. It is only l mile wide, 3 miles long, and sparsely populated with friendly locals! Lobsters are readily available at local markets. Plenty of elbow room from the nearest neighbors. Visitors have included writers, artists, professors, a judge, and those who have a history on the island who have returned for family reunions, weddings or to share their memories with grandchildren. For those who want more variety than the quiet island offers, Portland, Maine's largest city, has much to offer in the form of restaurants, shopping, museums, theater, and historical places. Daily ferry service is available. |
