Location: Long Island, Portland & Casco Bay, Maine, USA (Short Ferry Ride from Portland)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: 2 Story House Detached rustic bedroom in former workshop at end of garage
"The Captain's Quarters" is located in the middle of Long Island at the Harbor of Grace. Beaches and ocean views can be reached within minutes either by walking, biking or driving 12 miles per hour in the courtesy golf cart available to licensed adult guests.
The house has two bedrooms upstairs - one double bed and twin beds. There is a double pullout sofa in the living room. The big country kitchen has all appliances needed - nothing fancy but everything works! Washer/dryer are available and a 4-channel TV!
A former trap-building workshop at the end of the detached garage has been converted into the rustic "Off Shore Room" with twin bed and air mattresses where one can listen to rain on the rafted roof, read or wake up to the sun pouring through a row of windows. Young visitors especially like a place to play cards, listen to their CD's or talk into the wee hours, safely separated from their elders although by just a few yards.
Guests who have enjoyed this snug year-round winterized home have expressed appreciation for "this little piece of Paradise" as it fits into their total "island experience". The place is stocked with puzzles and dated books for quiet evenings after exploring the island and learning of it's rich history prior to and during World War II. It is only l mile wide, 3 miles long, and sparsely populated with friendly locals! Lobsters are readily available at local markets. Plenty of elbow room from the nearest neighbors.
Visitors have included writers, artists, professors, a judge, and those who have a history on the island who have returned for family reunions, weddings or to share their memories with grandchildren. For those who want more variety than the quiet island offers, Portland, Maine's largest city, has much to offer in the form of restaurants, shopping, museums, theater, and historical places. Daily ferry service is available.

My family and I have been coming to Long Island for 12 years and this was the first time we stayed at your house. I love your baskek of heart-shaped rocks. I added one to the collection! I also loved the golf cart...The room in the back of the garage was a great idea! Thanks so much for having us! I'm sure the second half of the week will be as good as the first.

I really like staying in Captain's Quarters. It was so fun. Your house it was wonderful treat for my whole family and I. And I want to say thank you for your hospitality. The best thing I liked the most is spending lots of time on the beach, and also taking walks on the rocks. July 9,2004 Margaret W.

Dear Sally, What a wonderful home on such a beautiful island. This is more spectacular than I imagined. Thank you for the flowers. It was a wonderful homeymoon until my husband fell on the rocks at Wreck Cove. But I must say the rescue EMTs are wonderful. The trip to Maine Medical was very smooth. We will have to come back to finish a honeymoon sometime in the future. Thank you for everything.

Dear Subsequent Visitor, If you are new, like we were, you may be sitting reading this book (Guest Book)and wondering "What's so special about this place?" "Top 10" list for L.I., Maine (in no particular order). The spar Restaurant, basketball court at community school, golf cart, residents (all of whom would wave to us!),Singing Sands Beach,Chub and his taxi, friendly folks at the island store... and at the Boat House, peace and quiet,Sally Pufall whose caring attention via e-mail made our 1st L.I. visit special before we even got here! Hope your week is as great as ours has been!

My first "island" experience. I could never have predicted the state of relaxation I have achieved here. No laptop connected, no cell phone. Just the opportunity to rediscover LIFE in the beauty and innocence of grazing deer and the tranquility of the ocean. It gave me the gift of time with my family. Thank you for the use of your world and home. I shall certainly return.

This vacation was amazing! I hope we can come back. This is one of the things I'll remember when I'm older. I'll especially remember how clean it was here and how beautiful it was

This vacation was awesome to take! This house was amazing and the island as well. I loved all the pictures and the heart-shaped rocks. This was a perfect place for our family because we got to do things together we usually don't do. I hope we can come back soon.

"What a wonderful place to come to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Boston area! We talked late each evening, listened to the seagulls, actually put a couple of your puzzles together! (We had a race between two teams of two each!) None of us had had so much fun doing something so simple in many a year! Thanks for a great get-a-way week!" P.S. The air is so heavy and fresh - we slept deeply and felt totally refreshed!
