Victorian Waterfront Cottage - Dock Space Available

Year Purchased: 1917

Why the Owner Chose Thousand Island Park

This property has been in the family since 1917. Not only is the River beautiful to look at, it has a "magic" about it that can't be explained. I personally think it's the people who make the River what it is... they come from all walks of life... some rich, some not -- it doesn't matter because we all have one thing in common -- the great St. Lawrence River... People gather at the River for all sorts of reasons: fishing, swimming, boating, yachting, sailing, and any other thing one can think of having to do with water, and especially the friendships which form.
SCUBA DIVERS -- be sure to visit the local dive shop to get a map of the wrecks nearby.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Don't forget your PASSPORTS! You may want to visit the casino in Gananoque, go shopping in Kingston, take a tour of Old Fort Henry - a strategic fort from the Civil War era - (they also have ghost walks). The waterfront area of Kingston is a delightful mix of students from Queen's University, boaters and business people. There are lots of unique restaurants, pubs, and a fascinating history of the area. Who knows? You might even see Bill Murray who has been known to visit Kingston!

Boldt Castle, Heart Island

Built in the 1800s for his wife, George Boldt envisioned this remarkable replica of a typical German castle (built on Heart Island) to exceed the grandeur of any others he had seen. When his wife died suddenly, his despair caused him to lose interest, and he immediately ceased all construction. The castle sat for decades without attention and a haven for vandals. As interest in saving our historic buildings flourished, the island was procured by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority (TIBA) which began rehabilitating this incredible mansion. Over the years, the TIBA has taken this "fixer-upper" and room by room finished the vision of George Boldt, using Boldt's original floor plans. Incredibly, most of the marble,

Q
Thousand Islands Winery

One of six wineries in the area, this is just across the bridge, towards Clayton. They have a tasting area, and lots of grape and wine oriented gifts. Be sure to ask about the grapes - a special hybrid that survives the harsh winters in the North Country.

International Rift and Peace Bridge

Boaters: Get your charts out and take a leisurely cruise around Wellesley Island -- you'll thrill at the swift water and narrowness of the Rift!

Owner's Map of Thousand Island Park

My grandfather wanted a safe haven to take his wife and boys for the summer, and they landed in Thousand Island Park. He was a surgeon from Syracuse, New York, and he could travel weekends back and forth to "camp." Before the bridge was built, he had to take a ferry to cross the river and drive the rest of the way. Or he could have taken a train to Clayton, NY and boarded a ferry from there.
I am a stay-at-home mom, and my children benefited from growing up in a place that was safe from "the outside world." I love sitting in my lounge chair on the dock, reading a book from the Park library and watching the boats, although the Labradors won't leave me alone until I've thrown the tennis ball into the river until they drop! And of course, it wouldn't be TI Park if the dogs didn't drop the ball at my feet and THEN shake themselves off!
The friends I have at TI Park I consider my true friends -- we had a group of about 15 of us kids who grew up there and we still keep in touch, even if we don't see each other for years. TI Park is my "true" home...

Warning to Potential Renters

Guest: rk (NYC)
Date of Stay: 08/21/11 Review Submitted: 01/25/12

This House is a beauty however, there are severe problems. First, a major rodent problem. The linens are NOT new as the owner claims. They appear to be from the 70's. There are hazards through out. Nails and glass in the boathouse and dock areas, nails and falling cabinets in the kitchen. The owner promises many things to get your booking then, only half of what you were promised is there upon arrival. There is also a neighbor who she asks to "look over the place" while you are there. This man yelled at us when we were on the porch just past 10:00 and, even walked through the back door unannounced to yell at us about having a candle (which was perfectly within our right based on the rules we signed). We've rented many other houses. This owner was not helpful in answering our concerns, mostly unavailable, and kept our security deposit when we raised issues with her house. If I had it to do over again, I would not have rented this house. I would also warn others against doing so.

Owner response:Please be advised that the two reviews that are less than favorable are from the same set of renters. They have used separate names and dates to make people think that they are two separate sets of renters when, in actuality, they are one in the same. Some people are just whiners, and when they break the rules the only recourse they have is to denigrate the owner. When I was first contacted by these people, they wanted to know if I could "do better on the rental rate" if they paid me in "cash." I said that it didn't make a difference, but to be gracious I said I would take off $100. Yes, last summer was the first time I had taken over the rentals, and it was a very steep learning curve for me: the people who ask for special favors or for a break on the price are not the caliber of people I want in my family's summer home. There is nothing misleading in the description of the cottage, and the renters' complaints are unfounded. Only after they left did they contact me to let me know of their complaints: had I known about any problems at the beginning of their vacation, I would have had the opportunity to fix whatever wasn't right. As for chipmunks and mice, again, I stress that I take all necessary measures to keep them out, but since the house is so old, it's almost impossible to keep these creatures out. Mostly they come around when food is left around on the floors and counters. Thousand Island Park is not the place for these people to spend their vacation. I, again, would advise any Landlord who is contacted by them to not accept them.

Beware! House in Poor Condition and Owner Untrustworthy!

Guest: Anonymous
Date of Stay: 08/06/11 Review Submitted: 01/14/12

We rented this property in August of 2011, and unfortunately found many problems considering how expensive it is. The following should illustrate the condition of this house. While the first floor was cute in a rustic way, the upstairs has not been updated for years. The bedding and sheets were mismatched and threadbare. We were told this house was a 2 bathroom, but the downstairs tub was not hooked up to any water supply, a definite problem for 8 adults staying for a week. Additionally, this house has a serious rodent problem, with mice and chipmunks running freely throughout the house. While the cleaning fee for this property is extremely high, there were cobwebs in virtually every room. Additionally, we were told that we would have the use of 2 kayaks, 1 canoe, and one sailboat. When we got to the house, there were no paddles for the canoe, no sail for the sailboat, and no life jackets to speak of. We were also told there was a hammock on the property & cable TV, in fact it didn't have either. Even though we were told that someone would greet us at the house, nobody did. We never received any keys, and could not lock up when leaving the house. As a final insult at weeks end after several of our guests wanted to find alternate lodging , they kept our security deposit saying that there was evidence of smoking on the property, even though there had been none and there was absolutely no damage at weeks end.....We even did all the dishes, as well as emptying the dishwasher before we left. This was the first rental season for the owner, and it is evident that she does not have any idea how to do this professionally or ethically. Do not rent this house, especially with children, as it is too dangerous for kids considering the debris in the basement and boathouse. There are many other beautiful properties in Thousand Island Park that are properly maintained, safer, cleaner, and cheaper!

Owner response:Our cottage is 134 years old, and, I think, in excellent condition. The living room wicker and the dining room furniture is original to the cottage. I think it adds charm and a sense of history to the cottage. The beds are also original to the cottage, with new mattresses, and the linens are new. I know that some of the plumbing can be improved... plans are to fix it this season. I feel that our cottage is more of a museum than a rental cottage. We didn't move out the good stuff and put in used and/or crummy furniture. Just sitting on the porch at sunset is worth the rental, and if there are people looking for hotel quality accommodations, then this is not the cottage for you. It is a jump back in time...and with the cottage being on the waterfront, it's a perfect cottage for 2 families, not 8 adults. These people would not have been satisfied had they stayed at the most exclusive hotel room in the area. Yes, last summer was my first time at renting the cottage, as my father (who died in March) had taken care of it previously. As for my ethics, I take umbrage with that; these people signed a contract specifically stating that they would adhere to the rules as laid out in the contract. They broke those rules within 15 minutes of arrival, and they have the nerve to question MY ethics. I would advise anyone who gets an inquiry from the above person to question whether it is wise to rent to them.

perfect vacation setting

Guest: John (Syracuse, N.Y.)
Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 07/02/11

I just left this cottage after spending a gloriious week with our extended family. This large cottage was very accomodating for our large family and had a first floor bedroom that worked out perfect for my aging mother. There seems to be endless bedrooms on the second floor. Although this cottage was huge we spent 90% of our time on the beautiful round screened in front porch overlooking the beautiful Saint Lawrence river. The whole family would meet on the porch or the dock daily for coctails and then would all gather at the huge formal dining room for dinner. Kathy the owner was very accomodating. When we arrived our WiFi service was not working and she returned my call promptly and was genuinely concerned that our stay was as carefree as possible. I must say that this is a 200 year old house, the floors squeek and the windows rattle but it is well maintained and has all the conveniences of a newer house and all the charm you would expect in a 200 year old victorian TI park cottage, As for the location, there is none better at TI park. just steps to the river with a very nice dock for boating and swimming and it also has a side yard for the kids. I would definitely come back to this cottage.
