Why the Owner Chose Upper Riviera
The gray and the rain of Oregon was getting us down. Our son had moved to Maui and our daughter to Vancouver, B.C. It was time to move. We looked at the Napa wine country, LaJolla and Palos Verdes. On a whim we drove through Santa Barbara on our way to Napa and a realtor showed us thirteen houses one afternoon. It was late November and we were in T-shirts and shorts. The weather was perfect. One of the houses was small, beat up but had a view. Just for fun I put in a low-ball offer. The owner took it and we moved to a town we had only been in one night and the only person we knew was our realtor. As it turned out it was one of the best decisions of our lives.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
It's a peaceful place where Jay has written several of his books in the privacy of the patio. If you're into decorating you'll appreciate the eclectic blend of collections, textures and colors. There is even a private spa area with a hot tub for two and an outdoor shower. We are centrally located a mile and a half from downtown, a mile and a half from the Old Mission and two miles from the beach.

We met when we were fourteen and dated for seven years before marrying. We're both now pushing seventy but are more in love than ever. Mary is a marriage and family therapist who is also into color, shapes patterns and decorating. She decorated our home. Jay played basketball at Oregon State and with the LA Lakers, coached with John Wooden at UCLA, was a traveling preacher for thirty years and has written some books (jaycarty.com). Jay lost a vocal cord a few years ago and had to stop preaching. As a result, we now rent our wonderful home as a vacation rental full time.
We discovered Santa Barbara nineteen years ago and made a ridiculous offer on a beat up house with a great view that had been occupied by college students for forty years. Needless to say, the place needed some work. We remodeled the first time just enough to make it livable and started working on the landscaping. Three years ago, nationally acclaimed architect Jeff Shelton (jeffsheltonarchitect.com) did it right when he turned our sows ear into a silk purse.
Jeff's style has been described as Dr. Seuss meets Santa Fe. Adobe, arches, wonderful wrought iron, chimney caps with whimsey, coffered ceilings, rounded corners, perfect texture and subtle colors--Jeff is an artist unequaled in his craft--and we (you too) are the beneficiaries.
Our home is located on a hillside and is totally private. Our nearest neighbor is sixty feet away and can't be seen from any of the windows or the patio. The combination of Jeff's handiwork, the privacy factor and a hundred and forty degree panoramic view of the ocean, channel islands and downtown Santa Barbara is hard to beat.
In your mind's eye, turn on the fountain in the patio and enjoy the sounds of its gentle splashing as you either tuck under the shade of the Bougainvillea covered pergola or work on your tan on the chaise lounges.
