A sanctuary

Guest: John (Shreveport Louisiana)
Date of Stay: 03/29/12 Review Submitted: 04/08/12

We enjoyed an awesome spring break in the Ozarks at Cave Creek Cabin. It was our first time to stay there and will definitely be back next year. We floated the Buffalo and spent a lot of time exploring and playing at Cave Creek-great swimming holes and fishing, panoramic views, wild turkeys, deer, evening fires in the fire pit, fire flies...

Hard to find, extremely remote, and absolutely incredible!

Guest: Randy (Hallsville, Texas)
Date of Stay: 03/14/12 Review Submitted: 03/27/12

This was my second favorite family vacation ever, which I did not expect. The cabin is in the middle of nowhere, but we found it fine by sticking to the directions. It feels like you are miles from anyone else, which was great. The cabin itself is huge, nicely furnished, and clean. The owners have created a real gem using age-old timbers from an old dog-run cabin they moved from out of state. The weather was perfect during our stay, so of course we spent most of the time either on the porches, around the fire pit, or exploring the property and river around the cabin. On day one, we made trips to two of the many hiking trails in the area (I highly recommend Glory Hole and the Natural Bridge (Alum??). Both were easy hikes and had a nice payoff at the end of the trail. That night we ate outside, then sat around the fire and ate way too many marshmallows. Day two, we drove to the river and floated about 12 miles. Absolutely beautiful! We left out of Jasper and used Riverview Canoe Rental to drop off and pick up. I highly recommend them. Ate lunch on a rock ledge overlooking the river and made a short hike during our trip up to one of the many caves that overlook the river. Made the mistake of jumping into the river off a 10 foot overhang, and literally lost my breath the water was so cold (It was mid March). Came back to the cabin that evening, had dinner outside and then again ate way too many marshmallows. Day three we drove to Ponca and did the canopy tour ziplines...a blast and my first time to ride a zipline or be 40 feet up in a tree. We all loved it. Ate in Jasper at Ozark Cafe...a must do! Skipped the marshmallows because we were too full that night. But my absolute favorite thing was the mornings. I would get up just before sunrise, make coffee and walk down to the cliff ledge that overlooks both the river (Cave Creek) and a pasture that is apparently maintained for wildlife. As the sun came up, I saw elk, deer, and wild turkeys in the pastures below. It was so incredibly peaceful perched on the edge of that cliff watching the sunrise. I won't mention the historical significance of the caves down below, but you need to go see them and then read the book on Newton County history in the cabin! My only gripe was there were wasps inside the cabin. Apparently this is normal (although I too live in the woods and there are plenty of wasps around...just not in the house). Maybe the old logs just have too many nooks and gaps.

Our Experience

Guest: norm (midwest)
Date of Stay: 09/09/11 Review Submitted: 10/07/11

Comment Text: Our experience: The nearly 5-mile off-road drive to get to the cabin was along crude, narrow, gravel rural lanes - fortunately we did not bring our good vehicle! Upon arrival, the creek could not be seen from the cabin front porch - the "vista" was of heavily treed forests all around. About 100-200 feet from the front porch, thru the heavy brush, we reached a 500-feet tall (+/-) cliff. At the bottom is Cave Creek. The only way to access Cave Creek, is to travel back off the property, down another rougher gravel lane, approx. 1 mile, across a field - absolutely requiring a high-clearance 4x4, unless you are a teenager or hale/hearty adult hiker. Water was low, muddy, with algae/weeds - hardly a swimming hole; but, the bluffs were pretty - somewhere up there was the cabin. Back at the cabin, we were a group of five, including us two parents, our 2 young children and a grandparent. The grandparent needed to sleep on the main floor near the bathroom, as was planned, yet no sheets were provided for the sofabeds, as advertised. The VCR was not operable/cables missing for the kids movies. The kitchen was less than clean. Doors to the basement bathroom and laundry were locked. The first evening, the caretaker received our call for sheets and access to the only usable shower (downstairs), and did not return our call. (The shower head for the claw-foot tub/shower was hanging off the wall attachment). We were later told by the Manager that the caretaker notified the manager/owner that night, who also did not call us at the mobile number/email we supplied. We left early, because the views were not as expected, we were unable to take walks down to the creek daily, nor were we able to watch our movies, as planned. We needed to run laundry, from all the chiggers in our clothes. And, the cliff siting was dangerous for our young children and dog, and the grandparent had no sheets. Manager later apologized to us for our inability to "relax and enjoy" the cabin. . . Owner unwilling to work out remedy; non-responsive.

Owner response:From owner: Cave Creek Cabin offers 125 acres of wilderness in an authentic huge and modern log cabin that has been professional rebuilt with modern amenities like central heat/air, washer/dryer, complete kitchen, 2 full baths, ceiling fans, oversized covered porch, huge picnic table with fire pit overlooking the beautiful Ozark Mountains. The owner has a significant invested in the property and surrounding. The property is in a Wildlife Habit Program and offers a unique experience. This client complains about lack of water in creek, this summer was one of the dryest on record, the creek can reach widths of 40-50' during periods of rainfall and is typically at least 20' wide. Client complains about bluffs being dangerous but they are very far from cabin. No child is going to accidentally be in danger unless you let them get lost in the woods where any child lost in woods is in danger. There are two TVs in the cabin and if a cable was inadvertently missing as a result of a prior guest they still had the ability to watch their movies. Client complains about bugs...and that is another reason they left early and wanted a refund. This client obviously does not understand nature; there are bugs, there are periods of dry weather that affect the surroundings, late in the season vines grow, trees have leaves that block views but also provide shade. Private areas of beauty are off the beaten track, and taking hikes to get from one part of the acreage to another should not be something to complain about but to be grateful for. As owner the refund policy is clearly stated and it takes considerable funds to keep this marginally profitable experience available. I hope by reading this review and my response you have a better understanding of the experience Cave Creek Cabin provides and understand that this client was unfortunately looking for a different experience. I also encourage you to read the other feedback on this site and if this is the kind of experience you are looking for you will not be disappointed.

We were a group of 10 people for three nights and there is no doubt it was one of the best vacation we had in many years. Cabin is secluded very well to enjoy quiet and relaxing time with family and friends. There are many activities around such as canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, swimming. Not to forget cabin is equipped with all amenities so you don't have to worry about anything other than carrying your food and drinks with you.

My family enjoyed several days & nights at the cabin and we will definetly be back. Next time, we'll bring the extended family as this cabin has pleanty of room for 12+. Thanks for the opportunity. Also, I was happy that even the backroads you have to take to get up to the cabin were on my GPS. We didn't have a problem getting there. Quit reading reviews and just book it!

With withered soul and beaten heart, I arrive at this place. Perhpas hope has driven me here, perhaps an inherant need to think there is hope is more likley. Nonetheless, I am greated by a retreat of solitude set upon a point of contemplation and reverance well suited to my needs.

WOW! The sounds outside are lucious to my soul. Loved listening to Cave Creek and your lil' watterfall. We found the bridge over Cave Creek (north and east on the road, past the old Cave Creek Post Office.) Drove to the Buffalo (really we bumped, slipped and crawled) somehow - through Gene Rush WMA. After 3 1/2 hours came out south of Bass. Although we spend a lot of hours in the area kayaking, we will never forget our drive through Gene Rush. BTW - forget trying this drive in a car - 4WD and high clearance needed. Your home is truly wonderful! The peace and tranquility were what we were looking for. AAH! Hope to see you again...

Thank you again for allowing us to enjoy your little piece of heaven. This was our second Christmas to spend here. It is a wonderful place. We hiked around here several days and were able to find caves and waterfalls prettier than any on the state maps. Even through it rained on Christmas day (we had snow last time) we were still able to have a beautiful and peaceful Christmas Holiday. We hope to see you again.

Our second summer back to the cabin, and we had just as much fun as we did the first summer we were here! We played in the creek, rode the 4-wheeler, went into town, and swam in the Buffalo River. Every night we played Yahtzee and watched movies - what a good way to reconnect from the hurry of our everyday. Thank you for opening your cabin. We'll see ya next year!

Our family loved our week at Cave Creek Cabin. The cabin was lovely and welcoming after a long drive. The creek was great - the kids fshed and swam and the two labs swam and played - we spent a lot of time at the creek. We never found the caves - I wish you had directions on where to hike to get there. Maybe they are easier to see in the fall/winter when the brush is less. We made a bonfire outside every night. The weather was pefect - even the few brief late afternoon storms. We are going home sunburned, tick bit and chigger covered, but we will miss it very much. Maybe not the chiggers.

WOW! The cabin and property are better than the website photos. We brought DVDs but spent our TV time watching your classic movies. Great selection. It was so quiet....the perfect place to wind down. The bluffs, visible from the front porch, are amazing. We drove down to the creek and spent several hours exploring the cliffs under the cabin. The adjoining Gene Rush WMA is a great place to explore...with 4wd! Thanks for a great time!

My best friends and I enjoyed this cabin as we left 2005 and began 2006! It was an awesome night: XXX orange juice (tiny sips), sparklers galore, some fast finger pickin', a fire that just wouldn't stop, brambly bushes, sinrise onthe bluff*****, meta what a talk and a few others tooting their own horn! It was memorable, to say the least, Thank you.

What a place to get away from it all. The hike down to the swimmin' ole made for a beautiful afternoon - that is a piece of heaven, down there. We explored the bluffs and the creek as snow flurries cam and went. Hated to leave it but loved returning to your warm cabin. The fireplace - the whole cabin is extraordinary. You'll probably want to keep this place forever, I would if I were you, but should you ever think of selling, please give us a call.

Stayed 10 days for our 15th wedding anniversary. Our 5th trip to the area in 10 years - love the area! This was a lovely cabin on a neat spot - definitely secluded . We hiked all over. It is very dry, yet there was water and fish in this creek (even the Buffalo is nearly dry). It has been too cold to use the porch, but great weather for the fireplace. Found the "Way Back in the Hills and "History of Newton County" books - definitely a good read to get an appreciation of the history of the area, and just a good read in general. (If you are looking for where to hike and what to do in Newton County - go to Jasper - the ranger station just north of town has all the maps of trails and drives in the area. Visit the "Spice of Life" bakery, Ozark Cafe, and the other little shops around the square - a neat little town! Also the Visitor Info center on the square will tell you plenty to do and see.) Thank you for a mrmorable anniversary.

We had a wonderful time out here in this seclusion. IT was very eaceful and we were able to relax. We saw deer and cows!! We enjoyed the river and just being together as a family unit. I had to cook dinners and wash dishes (somebody owes me!:) O ur 5 year old was a little freaked out by the bugs, but we are city folk so it was a fun experience. I enjoyed the early morning hours, siping coffee, watching the mist disappear, reading "Harry Potter" and soaking up the sun. Jerry, Susan, Matt and Melissa

What a beautiful place to visit! The weather was perfect, the view was gorgeous, the cabin was even better than we had hoped, and the kids loved playing in the creek. The only thing we hated was leaving!! One note- be careful driving down and up the road to the creek, we got a flat tire from a sharp rock, but all ended well and we had a great time.

I really like this cabin. We saw three deer by the barn. I like the swing. My daddy made a BBQ. I was afraid of the bats at the cave. The cave was dark. I sleep with my brother upstairs. We visited the creek. We saw a lot of fish and we threw rocks. I want to come back to the cabin.

We stayed here 5 beautiful days. Than God for this peaceful place. It's really a piece of heaven! Thanks, Paula and Joann, for the way you take care of this cabin. I have 2 kids, Vanessa - 6 and Jeffrey - 4. They really enjoyed this beautiful place. They were amazed to see a lot of bugs and different kinds of animals like deer, elk, hummingbirds, horses, cows and more. My kids enjoyed watching a movie every night. We all emjoyed relaxing in the swing. We visited Hurricane RIver Cave and my kids were a little afraid of the bats. We enjoy coming here, but my husband works too much cutting trees and cleaning up outside. We'll be back this fall. Angie Formica

We thoroughly enjoyed our week here at Cave Creek Cabin! Everything in the cabin was clean and well stocked, and the rustic decorating was exceptionally charming, from the crackled, whit-washed furniture to the woodland-themed books and artwork. The view from the kitchen was great, too - we saw several hummingbirds and a ton of blue and black butterflies. Our favorite spot, though, was undoubtable the creek. The hike down there was great exercise and we loved exploring all the fishing holes. Thank you so much for sharing your cabin with us! we felt right at home.

My husband and I enjoyed our trek to the edge of the cliff (a little scarry - but worth the view!) We loved the early mornings on the porch sipping coffee - and the peace and quiet with no phones ringing off the wall was perfect! The house is amazing in every way (except all the splinters we recieved from going barefoot) and the tub is very relaxing after a day playing along the creek! Thank you.

Only been here 3 days and already don't know what day or date! We should forget things lik this more often - might live longer. We are country folks and live in the hills, but not like this. Good to get away by ourselves and just enjoy. A very nice place and way back - scenery - hills - creek - cabin - everything very good. Walk road front of cabin to gate very pretty and quiet; must have been earlier way to be here. camped and stayed in cabins, 1950-1960, at Pruitt. Just did not explore these hills enough then. I am 78, so please think about, in your will, leaving this place to me. Thanks for a very nice stay. Sam & Alice & family

Thank you so much for the great stay. We met our niece and nephew here for a couple of days and enjoyed every minute of it. We're from Louisiana and they are from Texas. Idon't think we could have picked a better place to visit each other. My husband and I walked down to one of the bluffs and what a sight! Our son and his friend took a very long walk and explored some neat places here. He got within 30 feet of an elk and was so excited. He is sixteen and has been an outdoor person all his life. He had nothing but good things to say about this cozy place. Thabnks to special people like you - make life even better! Our great niece and nephew have enjoyed themselves too! They are satying a few more days. I wish we could, but work calls. One thing - I agree that you should clear a few trees to be able to llok at the great views. Older od disabled people would not be able to see the things wesaw if you didn't. Just a suggestion. Thank you for sharomg a piece of heaven with my family.

We have hiked Cedar Falls and Bear Cave at Petit Jean State Park, paddle boated on Lake Bailey at Petit Jean State Park, visited Jasper to shop and tour Mystic Caverns. We have canoed the Buffalo River 6 miles & visited the creek on this property many times. We have roasted hotdogs and marshmallows on an open fire. We have enjoyed the goat on the hillside and the dog herder that greets us each time we come and go to the main road. My children enjoyed seeing the dog and calling him to the fence each time we passed by - what a great & smart dog. We have also enjoyed coming in at dusk and looking for deer at sdusk and looking for deer and elk, rabbits, etc. in the fields and roads. In Texas, we call this spot-lighting, either your vehicle headlights or a strong hand held light catches the eyes of wild animals out after dark. It was so nice to see the fireflies out at night; I remember seeing these a a child in Texas; you don't see them much anymore and I got to teach my children what they are and how mystical the are. Thank you for sharing all the differend wonders this area has to offer.

We came to Arkansas to relax and just be a family. Thank you for helping us accomplish that goal! We enjoyed cooking out, playing games, talking and reading. I only got 1/2 way through the book "Way Back in the Hills" and wish that I could have finished it. Thanks for the precious guest's suggestion! We all enjoyed the back porch - even in June there was a cool breeze. Yesterday we canoed the Buffalo and had a great time. Thanks again for your hospitality. Rick, Theresa, Lauryn, Kaylan & Ryan

What a beautiful place! The cabin was every thing we expected and more! My husband has been in Afghanistan for 4 1/2 months and this was the perfect getaway for us. Seclusion is what we were looking for and we certainly got it here. It was so peaceful, no noiise except the birds and wind. The family of bludbirds entertained us with their antics in front of the mirror we placed on their house. (they wouldn't stay off of the car mirrors) A couple of day trips - one to Judy where my husband bought me a beautiful antique stained glass window for my birthday 6/8/05. Mostly, we sat on the porch watching the wildlife - birds, squirrels, turkeys, butterflies, deer, grogs, lizards, snakes (only 1 king snake) and enjoyed each other. We hope return after hiw years mission is up in January. The view from the porch should be something 3else without the leaves on the trees. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful cabin with us. P.S. Take a hint from Hansel & Gretel, mark your way out of the cabin our you may never find your way back. Mark & Marchele

Family is something we sometimes take for granted. As we grow older, we go separate ways - some of us move away & therefore, our time spent together is less often. However, there are special occasions which bring us all together and helps us remember the true meaning of family. This year we decided to do something special, so we gathered together at the Cave Creek Cabin to honor our mother/grandmother/great-grandmother, Gladine Sullivan Eddings of Harrison, Arkansas. Gladines children, Barbara Langford (Haynesville, LA), Joe Eddings (Mtn. Home, AR), each of theri families traveled from all over to share this special Mother's Day with a woman we all love so much, Glading Eddings. Our weekend included floating theBuffalo River, a trip to Mt. Judea, hiking in the hills, a special Mother's Day service at Ben's Branch Curch of Christ with our cousin, Junior Dodson, delivering the morning message. We all enjoyed our stay here at the Cave Creek Cabin. It is a beautiful and relaxing place. Sincerely, The Family of Glading Eddings

We came to Cave Creek also to enjoy quality family time. My husband, baby dauhter and I stayed for six very enjoyable days to recuperate from a very hectic home life and to visit family who live a few hours away. What a wonderful way to begin a summer break! Our baby loved the swimming hole and the solitude was surreal. we also met a few of the locals and swam at Bobby's Hole with a few "neighbors" from this mountain. Everyone has been very nice and probably throught we were the crazy folks who drove passed their houses 101 times on our visit (we found a really easy shortcut to Judy but it wasn't until our last day... wouldn't cha know). Today we spent a beautiful day at Silver Creek on the Buffalo - since the river is low, few people were enjoying that beautiful spot. You couldn't have asked for nicer weather or a more beautiful river. The bluffs were breathtaking. We love Arkansas! As for wildlife, we saw a very nervous doe cross thefield a few hours ago. We saw the family of blue birds in the box out front. We saw squirrels, rabbits, frogs, lizards and an ornate box turtle on our walks about the cabin. My favorite thing about the cabin is the beautiful open widow in the kitchen. My husband's favorite thing is the seclusion, and our daughter's favorite is the porch (she would cry to come outside). My (our) faavorite thing about this trip is all the butterflies!!! Wow!!! I've never sween so many - Cave Creek Cabin must be dead center of their migratory pathway. Thanks for the nice campfire ring. We enjoyed a nice campfire one night but left wood as our next one proved to be too windy. With the dry weather we didn't want to cause any mishaps. Next inhabitants enjoy! Thank you, Formica Family, for sharing your solitude with a family in need.

What a great escape! We were beginning to wonder though - after 7 wrong turnws - 2 hours to drive 5 miles! It' a miracle we ever got here! (and... got out and got back in!) Beware of the attach blue birds! They love vehicles with mirrors! Be sure and read "Way Back in the Hills" - it was a great book - thanks to the others who recommended it. I do agree that some of the trees need to be cleared to afford a nicer view of the river and valley. Beware of snakes - we saw three close to the cabin - non poisonous, however. Thanks for allowing us to experience the beauty of this land. Peggy & Bobby

May 18-22 what happens when 8 Episcopalians, a Baptist and a Catholic stay at Cave Creek Cabin? Wait... we got a token Lutheran too! It starts with a 7+ hour drive from Texas and Mississippi that ends in discussions over the two-way radio about which fork in the endless gravel road to take. Then that's followed by relief - we found the cagin and awestruck by its beauty. The remainder of our time is summed up as follows: Food, food, FOOD! Fantastic floats down the Buffalo River with the occasional unexplained turn-overs, also known as a courtesy dip. Hours and hours of hunting for rocks Perfect weather Big, big, BIG stories by campfire Cigars and peanuts Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey Catching big fish (well mostly the lack thereof) What was that $11 for again? Condors, buzzards, eagles (depends on the amount of whiskey consumed at the time of the sighting). Jokes, with some being good, others... not so much Did I mention the BIG stories? Having solved ALL the world's problems by campfire Laughter until your stomach hurts Sleeping under the stars and counting satellites Having seen some rabbits, three turkey, and one deer (none near the cabin), the conclusion was made the wildlife was afraid to come too close Prayers Naps Selection committees Talks of the "old times" Old Fart t-shirts Basically, it started and ended like all the trips do... tyhe renewal of old friendships, stronger faith in God and the hope that we all live life to its fullest. We look forward to our next adventure. Thanks,Cave Creek Cabin, for being part of our life journey.God Bless

Wow, the water flowing over the road was a surprise! However, after talking wit a local lady, we were reassured that crossing was not a problem. Although we crossed with visions of floating down the creek and into the Buffalo (eliminating our need for renting a canoe) we actually made it. When driving up the road, we again had visions of having to meet several locals to give them special passwords and engage in local rituals to gain entrance into the cabin - that drama didn't materialize. When we invaded the cabin, we immediately wondered if Dave (the caretaker) had come or waws missing on the property - perhaps the barn? That would explain why the truck mysteriously was moved tovarious placed on the property. After starting a cozy indoor fire and eating our veggie chili (hey, we are from around Boulder, CO) we bunked down. Day 2:Drove to Tyler Bend by National River VIsitor Center to get our National Pack Passport stamped. We hiked that area and enjoyed the views and the Collier homestead. We then split up and the more adventurous went to Hurricain Cave! When they returned we found that the cave is the beginning of all that is interesting in life (dead Indian boy, sabertooth tiger, large extince bears & Elvis Presley: in short, SEE the CAVE. That night we all had a lot of funlooking at the many stars, moths & beds. Thanks so much for creating such a wonderful and magical spot for a family to share quality time. This was the best... Sharon Grandi Thanks for all the extras you provide that made our sty wowbulous!!
