Living Room

 

Location: Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexican Riviera, Mexico

This is the house where we come to rest, away from the turmoil of Mexico City (35 minutes by plane or seven hours by car). Away also from the daily news, from television, from urgent requests of customers, or requirements of the sculptors workshop.

The setting of the house is unique, on the slope of a hill overlooking the bay, about 100 feet above sea level, with a magnificent view of both town and bay, and no nearby neighbors.

The house was built with age-old local techniques now almost completely lost, which insisted on a maximum of living in open-air and shady spaces, cool flooring, a roof of excellent insulating materials, tropical beams, and terra cotta tiles. No air conditioning is needed.

There is one master bedroom, a small room with two singles, two bathrooms, ample living and dining places, and a most pleasant kitchen and bar. Next to the house there is an ample terrace with a barbecue, specially appreciated for afternoon gatherings with friends. The sun sets behind the hill around four p.m. and the view of the bay begins, truly breathtaking.

Such is the house which we call "La Casa Del Amor." Here there is plenty of time to read, to meditate, to talk, and to play...

A typical day would be as follows... first, we go to the market downtown, by car or walking straight down the hill, which takes about the same time, ten minutes. Be ready for a surprise when you first see the market, because it truly is an astonishing place with a vast array of local fish and seafood, mountains of tropical fruit, dairy products, meat, and vegetables. After buying all we need for a couple of days or so, we come back to the house by car and have breakfast.

Then we may go to one of the local beaches or for a drive to one of the more distant beaches of which there are plenty within a 30-minute span, both north and south of the town, and keep in mind all the usual ocean activities: fishing, snorkeling, deep-sea diving, etc.

In the afternoon we come back for a drink and a rest, and then we will prepare dinner. We love to experiment with the local foods.

Sometimes we do not feel like cooking so we go to one of the many beach restaurants or downtown restaurants, and then go dancing at one of the local discos or in Ixtapa, the modern beach resort four miles away.

The rental includes cleaning and changing of the linens, every week. Silvestre and Maria, the housekeepers who have been there 15 years, will always be there with a smile and a helping hand, and at request, will be of assistance with the other house chores and laundry.
