Why the Owner Chose Boone

We chose the cabin at Valle Crucis for several reasons. We think it has one of the very best locations in the Boone, Blowing Rock and Beach Mountain areas. The cabin offers the atmosphere of being private and secluded but with the fantastic convenience of actually being very close to the main highway. In less than a minute's drive, you have highway access to Boone, Sugar & Beech Mountains. Mast General Store is just 6-8 minutes down the road and the Blue Ridge Parkway also is very close. You can also get over to Grandfather Mountain in about 25-30 minutes as well. Given the new four lane highway 421 from Winston-Salem, the drive up to Valle Crucis is so easy for us and only 1.5 hours. In addition, the Valle Crucis cabin has a real wood burning rock fireplace. You can't beat the ambiance and experience of a real fire. Most cabins these days have gas log fireplaces.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin

We like to visit the mountains of NC a few times a year and the cabin experience is just the right "get away" for us since we have lived in so many large cities. We like the clear air & the cool breezes are really refreshing in the summer. During the winter, our family has a very old tradition of skiing mainly in the Rockies but we started out at Appalachian Ski Mountain and Sugar & Beech Mountains in NC. All of those ski areas are only about 15 to 25 minutes from our Valle Crucis cabin and with the great artificial snow making technology in NC, we don't have to go all the way to the Rockies to continue our old Skiing tradition. Coming to the mountains really helps us to unwind.

Owner's Map of Boone

I am Vice President of R&D Americas region for a large international fast moving consumer goods company. Although a native of Winston-Salem, NC, our family has been living as expatriates for the last 12 years based in Hong Kong, Tokyo Japan and now living in Montreal, Canada. Our family is pretty busy with one son recently graduated from University and two daughters still in high school. Unlike a lot of Americans these days, we have a very traditional style family where my wife takes care of our family at home, so she does not have to try to balance the demands of a public job and home. Her main passion is women's competitive league doubles tennis. We are the proud owners of a 2 year old Shetland Sheep Dog. I like outdoor activities like riding bicycles, river rafting, hiking and skiing and the good thing is that all of those things are right on the doorstep of our Valle Crucis cabin and a lot more. I don't fish too much but my Dad does. When he gets a chance, he takes advantage of the many trout streams and lakes all around the area. He has taken our daughters with him several times and they will always have a lot of good fish stories to share with their grandfather.

3/24-3/27/2006 & 5/11-14/2006 As you can see, we stayed here two times in the last 6 weeks. What a great cabin! Thanks to Donna Horbury. We really enjoyed the privacy, hot tub, fireplace, and views. On our first trip, we were lucky enough to have snow the entire time. We had so much fun, that we actually tried to stay in April, but it was booked. This cabin has really inspired us to buying a cabin in the area. We are coming again this weekend. Whoever stays here, will have a fabulous time at hummingbird hollow. excellent.

This house was fabulous. I have stayed a many of Blue Ridge Vacation Cabins homes and they are all lovely. This one is in the same vein as all the others-comfortable, clean, interesting, and guest-oriented. This is the perfect vacation cabin and we cannot wait to come back to visit this summer and sit on the deck and swing.

Our friends brought us to this place with them to spend the weekend away from home. We didn't know we were going to find our second home. All I can conjure up is that this place was too perfect and too good to be true. Thanks for offering such a place that you could come back to again and again.

We stayed at the cabin between December 26th and January 1st. It was a cold week beginning with snow on the 26th. The cabin was very nice. We loved the fireplace and the hot tub and used both quite abit. A previous writer stated that the internet pictures do not do the cabin justice. We have to agree with that. Although we managed well, it would be wise to have four wheel drive in the winter,as the driveway is steep. Overall it was an excellent choice for a vacation. We recommend the cabin to anybody who wishes to spend some time in the mountains.

We came up mostly to escape the heat but we found a home. If I owned a mountain house, this would be it. There are so many things about this house that are absolutely charming. It was also really close to all the places we wanted to see. I just love this house!

This was one of the nicest cabins we have ever stayed in. Absolutely eveything was just done perfectly. The pictures do not do this house justice as there are far too many wonderful little touches that could not show up on photos. We never even left the cabin after we got our goceries. The porch was wonderful and inviting. The hot tub at night was perfect and there is so much privacy here. We have already booked it again for the fall and would recommend it more than highly.
