Come visit our four-year-old dream home built with loving care and meticulous attention to detail. The views from our hilltop of both the mountains and the ocean are considered by most to be the best in Discovery Harbour.
Situated on the slopes of Mauna Loa at an elevation of 1280 feet, Hale Puu Waawaa is at an ideal elevation which is high enough to avoid the heat of the day at the coast and low enough to stay warm at night but cool down for a comfortable night's sleep. The tradewinds are a refreshing, tropical breeze.
The house is fully furnished in the island style with your comfort in mind. You can watch the sunrise over the ocean from the private lanai off the master suite, or enjoy evening cocktails from various vantage points on the 770 square foot covered main level lanai.
The house overlooks the 10th fairway of the Discovery Harbour golf course. The views from the lanai look from the golf course, over nearby neighborhoods down to the ocean, as far as the laze plume for Kilauea when it enters the ocean on clear days. In the cooler months the snow-topped, gentle summit of Mauna Loa may be visible. It is possible to observe snow in the tropics from the warmth of your lanai!
We are only a short drive from South Point and the spectacular Green Sand Beach. Fifteen minutes away is the picturesque Black Sand Beach at Punaluu State Park. The entrance to Volcano National Park is an easy 45-minute drive. Restaurants, markets, and other shopping can be found in nearby Naalehu and Ocean View.

Year Purchased: 2005
Rich and Babette plan to retire to our dream home in Hawaii in 2010. We built our house in 2005 and have spent many happy vacations there. We enjoy sharing our home with people from around the world, and hope that they love Hawaii as much as we do. We love exploring the whole island, going to new beaches, finding hidden hikes, sampling the food, and especially meeting the lovely people of Hawaii.
Why the Owner Chose Naalehu
We like the slower pace of the Big Island, and that's one reason that we looked for a home in a rural area away from the resorts. We love our small town of Naalehu and the other communities nearby. The south end of the island has a lot of community events, festivals, music camps, nature activities -- there's always something going on with that small-town feel.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The best part of our house is the lanai. We have views of the nearby Waiohinu hills and can even see Mauna Loa on a clear day. We have nearly 180 degrees of unobstructed ocean views (the ocean is 4.5 miles away). The house backs onto the Discovery Harbour golf course and the lots next to us are not built on, so we have our own secluded hide-away.
