We stayed here for a week for the last leg of our honeymoon. We'd been to San Francisco and Los Angeles and had been non-stop sightseeing so we really wanted the opportunity to relax and unwind before heading for home. This was just the perfect place! We could just do our own thing and take our time in the most beautiful surroundings. I've read it on here but it is so true - the photos do not do it justice. There were moments when we sat on the swing chair, in the hammock or in the hot tub drinking champagne and watching the amazing sunsets and just could not believe how perfect the moment was. It's like a home away from home only better! The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. towels, books, dvds and inflatables. Even a huge trampoline and some friendly wandering chickens. The fruit trees are luscious and delicious and Sandra encouraged us to help ourselves - we made lemonage and I ate my own body weight in papya! Sandra was lovely and really welcoming without being intrusive. She had picked us some fresh fruit for our arrival which we thought was a lovely touch. I became addicted to fresh papyas and custard apples from the garden and my husband fell in love with the steam room and outdoor cooking! It really is a special place! We were there in the rainy season so we had sunshine in the morning and late afternoon but it tended to be cloudy in the day. We spent some time at the beach and visited the volcano one day. The rest of the time we just relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful place. The winds are really helpful in cooling you down in the sun and the view of the sun over the sea is breathtaking. It's hard not to repeat myself because I feel like I can't do this place justice! Just take my word for it! Fabulous!!! Oh, you will need a car!

Perfect romantic getaway

Kona Heaven’s Hideaway was a perfect vacation for my husband and I. We had been to the Big Island before and indulged in all the touristy things so this place was great private getaway for two weeks for us! We enjoyed amazing sunsets while cooking our dinner in the wonderful outdoor kitchen. My husband loves to grill so the charcoal grill was perfect for him. Every night after dinner we would sit in the hot tub under the stars...heaven! We woke every morning to the birds chirping and went for walks after having our morning Kona coffee. There are some awesome steep hills around there to give a good workout! After enjoying a great breakfast we would either relax by the pool or go find a beach. It was so quiet and beautiful that we hated to leave to go anywhere! Kailua and it’s eating & shopping places are only a short distance away so that was a daily excursion for us. We went on a helicopter tour of the entire island and the volcano the second to the last day that we were there and that was absolutely the best experience, taking us to places that you could never get to by car. So we had all our touring done in 2 hours! I would recommend Blue Hawaii Helicopter tours to anyone. We so enjoyed all the fresh fruit from Sandra’s orchard, unfortunately the papaya’s were not ripe yet so we got some at the Farmer’s Market in Kailua which is a great place to get fresh fruit. The great room and the bathroom and shower were so spacious and bright, but aside from sleeping we spent all our time there on the patio and outdoor kitchen. I would definitely return and recommend Sandra’s place highly! She’s a wonderful lady and hostess. She also gives a great theraputic massage (my husband and I both had one). This place was everything we expected and more. Thanks Sandra for an awesome stay!

Perfect get away for family or just a couple

I can't say enough good things about our vacation at this home. I did tons of hours of research looking for a vacation rental on-line. I keep coming back to this one as it had it's own pool and hot tub, which not that many did, and the price was very reasonable.. I had some trepidations about sharing the home as this is a basement rental. Turned out that this home is very private like it says. I couldn't have been more pleased. Now for the good stuff. The pool and spa were fantastic. We loved the outdoor kitchen and covered patio area's. The views were very good as we watched the sunsets and the boats come and go from a little harbor. The grounds were gorgeous and filled with flowers and fruit trees. This is such a good place I actually wish that we had more time just to enjoy the views, pool, etc.. Another great feature is this homes location. I had never been on Hawaii before and didn't really know the island at all. I knew that Kono was the dry side and that was about it. This home is close to just about everything we did. Costco is just down the hill, but the home is in a quite residential neighborhood. Kono Diving Company, (which I have to highly recommend as well. You absolutely have to do the night Manta Ray snorkel or dive. We did the snorkel and it's worth coming to the island just by itself. Research this, you wont be disappointed), is also just down the hill about 10 minutes away. It's almost centrally located between the volcano and Hilo as well, both of which we visited in day trips. This trip was a big deal for my family of four, something we can't afford very often, but I would not even considered staying anywhere else on the big island. Thank you Sandra for this rental and a place we will remember always!

We have staying in many places found through vrbo but this one was exceptional. Beautiful setting, clean and well maintained property, easy to get to places from, space to run around... it had it all. We loved the privacy of the pool and gardens. My 12 year old twins loved the chickens! We would love to return for another visit!

We had the best time at the Kona Heavens Hideaway. Sandra is fantastic and her home is perfect in every way. The view is to die for, the tradewinds keep the temperature just right even though it may be very hot down in Kona and it is located close to everything. We have stayed at the property twice and will not even consider staying anywhere else when we visit the Big Island.

We just enjoyed two awesome weeks at the Great Kona Escape and what a fantastic experience it was. The yard full of fruit trees, the birds, chickens and geckos kept our son busy as well as the pool and hot tub. The outdoor kitchen was fun to cook in. The neighborhood walks we great, lots of hills close bye to get a work out. We were only a few miles from Costco and some great restaurants, but out of town enough for a peaceful vacation .Sandra was generous and helpful with us on where to go and what to see. I would recommend this to everyone.

Host Sandra lives, and is, Aloha. That said - in my opinion - this VRBO is Superior. I am an avid VRBO customer. This rental was simply delightful. In the past, I've lodged at the resorts of Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and also the Fairmont Orchid. While they provide luxurious surroundings and amenities as does this rental, those resorts can in no way provide the ultimate privacy that one will experience at The Kona Heavens Hideaway. Should you find yourself in need, this VRBO also has the personal advantage of a 'kama aina' - a Hawai'i resident - who gives excellent advice &/or directions re: your Hawaiian stay. Take advantage of her skillful massage therapy services. You will not be dissapointed. The Kona Heavens Hideaway is a place of distinguished quality, exquisite leisure, but most of all, invaluable privacy. Mahalo Nui Loa Sandra, for your most precious spirit.

Best Vacation EVER!

Staying @ the Kona Heavens Hideaway was the best, mostly I loved how much room we had! We never felt cooped up like we would at a hotel. My husband and I brought our 2 kids- a 12y.o. (girl) and 6 y.o.(boy) ( the 6 y.o. has TONS of energy) and they both had tons of stuff to do. From laying on the hammock or jumping on the trampoline to walking around the yard to see all of the fruit trees, the hot tub and pool,and all of the lizards that wandered by, they never got bored. That's saying a lot for my family. Sandra was gone for part of our stay, but she had a friend (Alexis) help us and both ladies were very friendly! They had fresh fruit cut and available for us on our trip. Alexis brought us fresh eggs from the neighborhood chickens. The location of the house is great, I liked that it wasn't in the middle of the hub, (it's about 10-15 minute drive to Ali'i Drive shopping.) One thing I forgot to mention was watching the sunsets from the patio .....UNBELIEVABLE! I cannot say enough good things about staying here, I really appreciate Sandra letting us stay in her home, we would love to stay here again whenever we decide to come back! Sandy was there to welcome us upon our arrival and provided a tour of the facilities and a bowl of fresh fruit and avocado from the garden. The accommodations were comfortable and luxurious. We enjoyed the open air kitchen and plenty of beauty and space everywhere. From the room and the patio areas you can view the ocean and beaches below, as well as lush vegetation nearby, alive with birds and lizards.

Two friends and I came to stay in Kona for a week for our friends' wedding. We wanted to be near Kona with some amenities. The property far surpassed my expectations. The rooms were airy and comfortable. The shower was amazing. I loved the outdoor kitchen. Plus, there was a wonderful pool and hot tub that we used often. Even though it was in a neighborhood, there was so much beautiful foliage surrounding the property that it seemed like we were in our own secluded jungle home. We had a view of the ocean and every night witnessed breathtaking sunsets. Sandra, the owner had a lot of information about the Big Island and was very friendly.

We stayed at Sandra's home for a week while on vacation attending a friend's wedding on the Big Island. The home grounds and vegetation is beautiful. Fresh avocados were delicious! The open air kitchen worked out perfectly and the pool and hot tub were a highlight every night. The view was spectacular and we enjoyed amazing sunsets. Sandra has done a wonderful job turning her home into a private guest retreat. We had a great time in a perfect setting while on our trip.

We absolutely loved this place. Full pool and spa with spectacular views. Sandra was a terrific host who made sure we had everything we needed. I was able to book a massage (spur of the moment indulgence) within a few hours of checking for availability & was not disappointed. Fully relaxed, all I had to do was head downstairs to the hot tub and watch the beautiful sunset! We cooked great meals in the outdoor kitchen with friends and enjoyed our music, company & privacy for a terrific vacation treat. Would definitely stay here again! Thanks for a terrific Hawaii experience!

December 12, 2010 We just finished our stay at the Kona Heaven’s Hideaway, and WOW! This place is UNBELIEVABLE! And SO ROMANTIC! For a decent price, you get total privacy in a beautiful little jungle paradise, with your own private pool / hot tub deck with majestic views of the Kona Coast - the ultimate Kona sunset viewing location! Basically, the entire downstairs belongs to you which includes a very large main room with large bathroom and shower, nice little outdoor kitchen with everything you need, and large pool and hot tub deck. There is also an outdoor shower that my girlfriend and I utilized everyday. Imagine taking a shower while watching the sunset. The pool deck that you walk out onto from your large room is nothing short of spectacular. We took pictures of the spectacular sunset from the pool and hot tub every night. The house (I believe) is located between 1200 and 1500 feet of elevation, nestled high on the slopes of Hualalai Volcano. This provides spectacular views of the coast, and Kona’s famous sunsets. Next to the pool, you walk down into the little jungle paradise below the main house. We took strolls there every morning sipping our Kona coffee and listened to the song of the jungle birds and critters while munching on different jungle fruits that grow there - the juicy sweet Star Fruits were our favorite! There is also a volleyball net and fun trampoline on the property. Sandra, our host, was wonderful. The woman promises you privacy, and that is exactly what you get. She leaves you alone the entire time, unless you need something. She provides all the amenities you will need - pool stuff, games for kids, I even borrowed her steel-string acoustic guitar for a few days! My girlfriend and my friend’s wife took advantage of Sandra’s massage services, which she provides at a very reasonable price upstairs in the house. My girlfriend said after, it was “the best massage of my life”. The place is so private that my girlfriend is coming home with no tan lines! This place is perfect in every way - perfect for a romantic getaway, perfect for a small family (there is a second bedroom with two twin beds and laundry facilities), perfect to have your friends over for a barbecue (which we did a couple times) to view the amazing sunsets, etc. We will definitely be returning here. This could possibly be one of Kona’s best kept secrets, and at such a fair price! FIVE STARS! *****

This is a beautiful house in a quiet and somewhat secluded area that is perfect for escaping the world. There is also a hot tub alongside the pool (which has a skimmer that according to the owner can not be taken out of the pool) where you can lookout on great view of the ocean. When we arrived the owner gave us a quick tour of the property. She seemed sweet and very cordial, but I know when I'm welcome and I did not feel warm and fuzzy. I believed her distaste was with me at first, but after awhile I realized I was just a guest in her house. Not to be mistaken for a guest at a hotel who has total freedom to have guests over for drinks after 10pm. I guess I felt like I was staying in my mother in-laws basement for a week and did I mention my mother in-law does not care for me much? We tried to make the best of it though and tried be there as little as we could. Having someone living directly above you when your on vacation does not feel isolated or romantic to me. To top it off two days before we were scheduled to leave Sandra made the comment " last day in Paradise today?". I quickly reminded her that our flight was not for two more days. As we were leaving I told my wife that Sandra was trying to get rid of us. My wife laughed and told me I was crazy. When we got back there was a counterfeit e-mail (by counterfeit I mean she took an original correspondence of our rental agreement and changed it to her advantage.) that stated we had until 11am the next morning to leave. Luckily I married the smartest woman on the planet and she just happened to bring the original sighed contract. To add insult to injury a day before we were supposed to leave we came back from the beach to finish getting a few little things. Sandra had come down after we left and started cleaning as if we were never coming back. the things we had come back for were gone and the trash was missing. Sandra was not home( for the first time in our time there) Of-coarse. Just for the record we are a married couple in our forties not some young kids out to party. I'm Guessing I will not get my damage deposit back.

Thankfully the next guests weren't checking in right away. I was surprised by your unexpected extended stay beyond our agreement and also surprised that you came in a day early thinking I could put you up. I'm happy that your mother-in-law enjoyed her stay and am sorry that you had expectations beyond our contract. It was a close call, but you took your things out just in time for me to ready the place for the next guests and I didn't have to touch your belongings. Mahalo, Sandra

We just returned from our 4th stay at the kona heavens hideaway and can,t say enough about how wonderful it is to know that we will be met with a warm welcome and given the royal treatment from our hostess when we return again next year. This truly is a great vacation home, always clean with a well kept spacious yard and a generous hostess who is protective of our privacy. The fabulous fruit, the strong therapeutic jets in the hot tub, the great location, the comfortable bed and the massages from Sandra are things we look forward to each year. We,ve visited all the islands but when we discovered this place we discovered our favorite spot.

Great vacation home

My family and I stayed here at Sandra's "Kona Heaven's Hideaway" for a couple days and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We could not have found a more beautiful, more accomodating, more tranquil place to spend our vacation here in Kona. I have 3 children ages 3, 11, and 13 and they spent every minute of our stay jumping off of the diving board and swimming in the pool. My husband and I spent our time relaxing in the jacuzzi and the steam room. We all agreed that staying here was well worth the money and beats staying at any hotel. We actually cancelled our reservation at the Hilton Waikoloa Village to stay here, and we're glad we did.

My friends came from England and we all desended on this beautiful house with great expectations. All were met. A beautiful pool overlooking the whole Kona coast, convient to everything we wanted to do. Even 6 of us were confortable and happy. And we were met with green eggs laid by the most healthy chickens in the owrld! Thank you Sandra. We hope to return!! This is a great place to be! You must do the zip line--unbelievable.

We are recently back from a wonderfully relaxing stay! Sandra has created a delightful retreat, with attention to many small details that made our stay comfortable and easy. In particular, the set-up is ideal for parents traveling with children -- there is a generous supply of toys and games for kids of all ages, and the outdoor kitchen means mom and dad can enjoy a late dinner and hot tub under the stars, without disturbing anyone's sleep... The premises are clean and well-maintained, and the surrounding gardens beautiful! Sandra is a most gracious hostess, friendly and helpful, while respecting her guests' privacy. Her massages are excellent! We would gladly return...

Not exactly what we expected

Listing description is misleading. This is not really a rental house - you are renting 2 rooms and a great pool/hot tub. One "bedroom" is actually a living room, other bedroom is very small with 2 twin beds. Extra aero beds are meant to be set up in living/"bed" room. Ok for families with small kids, but 5-8 adults? Not so much, if you want privacy. Outdoor kitchen is better in theory - in reality there are mice and cockroaches to contend with. The dishes should have been professionally cleaned after previous occupants left (many were sticky/dirty). For kids = FUN. Owner is very nice/helpful, but for most people, there are better deals to be had elsewhere.

Could Have Been Good But Was Not

The owner scheduled a major renovation directly above the vacation rental for the entire duration of our stay. This resulted in significant noise and debris that rained down into the hot tub and pool area. Also we had hot water for showering only two days out of nine we stayed there. When we made our concerns known to the owner she more or less brushed them aside claiming no one else had ever made a complaint. I was at a loss to understand why the owner would schedule a renovation when guests were staying there. On our last day, the renovation guy said he hoped he wasn’t making too much noise. I was honest and told him it was very disturbing, and then he also told me that the owner insisted he do the renovation during this time. Well, you can imagine how I felt about that!! It may have been convenient for the owner (she was away), but it ruined our time. We are coming back to the BIG island in March 2011 but needless to say we will not be staying here.

Owner response:Aloha Tom, My heart goes out to you as I can't possibly imagine the stress you live with having an autistic child screaming much of the day, and my tile project certainly didn't add to the peacefulness you so badly need. The tile setters didn't start till 9 am and I had them using the tile saw at the other end of the property. I thought this would be quiet and considerate. While I DID offer you a free week stay after you complained to me and you refused my offer, I don't really see why you would still, 7 months later, be sending in a negative review when I did everything I could think of to make ammends. We stayed at this enchanting home with our 2 children, ages 6 and 4. It worked out wonderfully. The pool, grounds, chickens and trampoline kept the kids busy while my husband used the hot tub and took turns getting an incredible massage from Sandra. We stayed at this home at the end of July and abslutely LOVED it! We had lots of privacy which we appreciated and the accommodation was comfortable and spacious. We especially loved Sandra's garden...beautiful and well kept. Our stay here will remain a special memory for us of our time in Hawaii. We would definately return if we could.

We had a lovely stay at Sandra's home! Our party was 6 adults (including 3 boys aged 18-22) enjoying 4 action packed days on the Big Island. The location was ideal, it was very easy to find & close to the major highway & the airport. We left early each morning to do various island activities (zip lining near Haiku, the place of refuge & Kilauea volcano) & it was always a joy to return to Anini Street, jump in the pool, relax in the hot tub with a cold beer & take in the view! The open plan living space & outdoor (covered) kitchen were great hangouts & Sandra's book exchange had an excellent & varied collection!

Recommended for:Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Our stay in Hawaii was beyond our expectations due to the wonderful accommodations. The pool, the grounds, the quiet setting, the outdoor kitchen and the owner’s gracious hospitality will not soon be forgotten. A hotel or condominium simply cannot compare with the relaxing atmosphere and spacious setting we enjoyed at this property. We would recommend it to anyone.

This is our favorite place to stay in Hawaii - great views, tropical surroundings, convenient location and private- Not a hotel or a condo! The owner is an artist and her talent shows from the paintings to the landscaping.

We were there last week, and it is an amazing place. The pool and spa along with the gardens were great!!! It was also very convenient.

This is a wonderfull place to stay. I thoroughly enjoyed the comfort of the private apartment.Quiet days and cool evenings with the best of gentle breezes. The owner is delighfull,very helpfull and knowledable about the area. A wonderful place to settle in or enjoy as a base for traveling around the islands beautiful attractions.
